  1. space limitations...i can't go bigger than the heresies. [li] i guess where there's a will there's a way. [*-)] quarters next time...[] i've been in touch with mr. crites...[:$] feel like i'm in good hands.
  2. what a tough three years. i went to the dark side, got a digital surround decoder and tried to do an all-tube surround system for movies. shopping for tube gear was interesting. i had an Eico HF 87 and bought a pair of li'l Ampex monos and a pair of Dynaco Mark IVs. several solid state amps were in and out of the mix from Yamaha, Sansui, Adcom and NAD. pre and phono sections were Anthem, Nakamichi, Adcom, Sansui and NAD. i tried some ancient ESLs for a minute, liked them but didn't want to put up with the gargantuan dimensions or finiky bahavior. so long-lived speaker manufacturing was provided by Boston, Infinity, AR, Paradigm, JBL, KEF, KLH, NHT, Radio Shack and Klipsch in vintage as well as more modern offerings. all of this gear was used and some of the previous owners were eccentric individuals. the surround soon went by the wayside, too much trouble for my small room and the added complexity just wasn't worth the effects. i didn't think my system did the music justice anymore...ultimate foul. during my search one of the sellers, a musician, had a Nuforce amp feeding a pair of Gallow's high end offerings. after auditioning his new system i looked for information about the semi-tube-sounding, relatively inexpensive amps and tripped on the Tripath designs...along with some audiomaniac-guy and a DIY supplier out of Hong Kong. i built a few amps from SI boards with Obla-di-Obla-da-Obligattos, fancy volume controls (as big as a truck), hand-wound inductors along with re-routing some circuit paths, mounting huge caps on the SMD chip's PS rails and powered them with modified switching power supplies. then i found the Trends. my SI-based amps may sound better but may not be worth the trouble. comparison to follow(?)... we're on a speaker forum, right? sorry to get sidetracked. my favorite mates for my fave-amp, the Eico were the AR 93s. i tried most of my speakers in two channel mode before i started my dark path but the Klipsch KG2 and Heresy 1.5(?) were just wrong...or less right. something clicked after i dumped on the surround, i got rid of the ss preez (NAD and Nak) and put the 15-year-old Anthem back in service, vinyl was back to its ol' self... spawned a whole 'nother round of recycling; got the Thorens out. replaced the floorstanding ARs with KG2s placed next to my monitor on the "amplifier altar" rack, nearfield. many mini-monitors were successful in this location but i never tried the more Rubenesque models on this sacred stand. the KGs kicked butt. the image/sound was not believable before. the music just didn't make sense. with this move, closer together, the image improved and the sound was very right but i continued with tweeking their placement. best was a little toed-in and 48" apart but i had spiked stands in the garage. on my amp altar? i put counter sunk nickels under the spikes and angled the KGs up a bit. sweet. after i finalized the location i blu-tacked the nickles' bottoms. reminded me of the detail from my old KEF references but the KEFs could never relay the soul gushing from the Klipsch boxes. I was back on track and enjoying music from all sources. and i was a happy camper for months but tried the Heresies in the same position last weekend. instant intoxication. i love these speakers with two trends, one to a pair of Hsu subs. video and CDs run through a Marantz DVD and Vinyl sound is sourced from a hot rodded Technics 1200MSG. even the computer gets in on the action with a Juli@ sound card. everything's connected with various home-brew, braided, teflon-insulated, cat 5 and teflon insulated/pure silver ICs and speaker wire. what can i do to improve this awesome experience? i did a search, found the Klipsch website and researched a great collection of posted information. after sifting through the posts i see that i should: ENJOY THE MUSIC! awesome. this tweek, that tweek, pages of reading and numerous recommendations but all have realistic checks and balances. ultimately, if i like what i hear "don't eff with it." thanks guys. action items: i need to check the S/N to find the date of manufacture and positively identify the model and understand what i have. then... check the baffles for proper assembly (glued) . refreshing the caps and soldering the crossover components seems to be required maintenance, proper terminals and different wiring may help. experimentatiion with horn damping and bug screens may prove fruitful as well. but underscoring everything is this great forum's ultimate message: listen to and enjoy the music. thanks! brotha rubba .
