  1. I remember the Belle not being as week as the LaScala in the bass department. After I bought my LSFBs I heard a pair of Belles and got a real sinking feeling in my stomach. I started looking for ways to get that missing bass back by reading up on subs, etc. A couple years later I ended up buying my then 25yr old Khorns and selling the LSFBs for a hundred bucks more than I got the Khorns for. I wouldn't have the Khorns today if the LSFBs had had more bass, and I should have bought the Belles in the first place. But being overseas you buy what the military PXs have, when they have it.

  2. The best antenna I've used so far has been a quad loop I made out of wood. Two 1"x1" pieces in an X-pattern with 1/8" holes drilled about 2 1/2' from the center. A piece of solid 12ga or 14ga copper goes thru the holes. Picture a square with an X drawn in the middle; the edges of the square are the solid copper with 2 1/2' long sides, 10' circumference. A piece of 75 ohm coax is soldered on where the ends meet, one end to center conductor and the other to the shield. I used a second loop 20" in back of the first as a reflector. The ends of the solid wire were soldered together on it. I made this thing about 25 yrs ago from an article in the ARRL handbook. Recently I read of one made for the AM band using about 220' of wire tuned with a variable capacitor. My loop worked much better than a dipole, bringing in 23 stations from over 50 miles away compared to about 3 locals for the dipole.

  3. I got into HT 20yrs ago when I had 4 Bose 901s. When I realized they were toys, I got a pair of LSBs with HWOs as surrounds and a HBR as center. A letter to Klipsch said "not compatible". I upgraded the LSBs to a pair of K.C.WRs in 1991 I got from the wife of the original owner who was on her way to a nursing home. I bought an Academy as center, but wasn't too thrilled with it all. I remember an interview in Speaker Builder with PWK who described a center speaker for the Khorns, but unfortunately didn't keep the article. Recently I picked up a pair of K-400 squaker horns attached to older Peavey 22 drivers, and while searching for that interview online I found and joined this forum. (Lots of good info here. I rebuild old radios, but hadn't considered recapping the Khorn's crossovers before.) I've searched this forum but haven't found any reference to that old interview yet. So...

After being into 2 channels for the last 15 yrs, I'd like to get back into HT using the Khorns. I'd like to build a center for them, but I haven't seen anything here mentioning compatability between older gear and newer, better components. IIRC the manual said these are 16 ohm. I'd appreciate input from anyone who could tell me which issue that PWK interview was in, or better yet, suggestions from those who have done this type of thing before. Thanks,

  4. I just had my 300B amp project aluminum chassis powdercoated. They blasted it with a mild abrasive, powder coated it, then cured it in a 350-400 degree oven. Many colors are available as well as shiny and flat finishes. My chassis came out really primo looking. Blasting the inside of the horn throat might be a problem. Some non-metallic things can be coated, but I understand it's more expensive due to the preparation needed to make the item hold an electrical charge. Eastwood sells a DIY kit you can use in the garage with a yard sale oven, since you wouldn't want the ol' lady finding out you polluted her kitchen with chemicals from your project.

I've used products from POR-15 on my truck with good results. Their paint remover worked great for me on steel and aluminum. I painted my aluminum transmission with black POR-15 and a rag. The finish is tough as nails, though you'll need to redrill the mounting holes and cover the threads before painting.
