Violins, flutes, female choruses, some male tenor voices are strident, especially when played/sung loudly.
Not so much at less than forte. String quartets and trios stll sound quite nice.
The rub is we (well mostly the SO) are opera and mass fans and are finiding more and more of our library less than pleasant to listen to.
Maybe our ears are getting old, along with the rest of us...

I neglected to say that we do have the Crites tweeters. For more than a few years we were pleased, but not so much now. As I implied, maybe we're getting old and losing our "golden ears"...
Re Will Vincent: his amp is the first (and only) piece of audio equipment that has passed the WAF test with flying colors. The SO has been know to dim the lights when listening to enjoy the glow...

Would ESS Heil AMT tweeters be plausible/possible replacements for my Heresys' horn tweeters? To our aging ears the Heresy tweeters seem to squak more than tweet...
If so, would I need a re-configured crossover or would the tweeter replacement be a "simple" drop in? I have the Bob Crites replacements x-overs.
We have a smallish listening room, a Will Vincent ST-70 amp and listen mostly to classical music via CD/DVD and satellite.
Any thoughts, ideas, opinions will be greatly appreciated...

Any first hand (ear?) experience with any of the smaller Reference speakers?
Can "different" be expanded? Or is it apples & oranges?

BTW: I'm in a very rural area, over 2 hours from anywhere (and anywhere ain't too great...) so auditions and try-outs are not very feasible...

We'll be setting up a smallish (14x10x8) study/sewing room. Our main speakers are Heresys drivien by a Will Vincent ST70. Perhaps not the highest of fi, but we have become very fond of the sound.
What we would like are small bookshelf speakers that have the same sonic characterists as the Heresys to use in the new room. Do any of the modern, small, Klipsch speakers fit the bill? Music listened to is mostly acoustic "Americana" or classical.
Any and all suggestions, opinions and ideas will be gratefully received.

I have the opportunity to get some Heresy II Squawker horns and drivers (K-53-K, K-701) but do not know if I can simply do an r&r with my original Heresy I Squawkers. I have replaced the original crossover with one from Bob Crites. There seems (to our ears) aduible breakup in the upper mids, especially male singers, large choruses and massed strings. Swapping out the Heresys for another speaker pair (small EPOS...) does not reveal the same "breakup"...
Amp is a Will Vincent ST70 in triode mode. Pre is a friend's hand/home made tube pre (3 6SN7s...). Sources are mostly Bolder modded Squeezebox 3 or DVDs/CDs from an older OPPO playing classical (85%) or acoustic "Americana".
Any advice, opinions and/or suggestions are appreciated...

Is there such a thing as an "audiophile quality"carousel cd/dvd player? My SO has increasingly more problems getting up and about and would dearly love to replace our single play OPPO with a carousel as good. We use a Redwine NOS DAC with the OPPO to good effect (we think...).
We'd like the following capilities: HD for DVDs, SACD and Redbook for CDs. 1080 is nice, but not a deal breaker. Either optical or digital to the DAC is OK.
Any thoughts, suggestions, opinions are appreciated, as always...

Well, it seems I can make CDs that will read on all the players I have EXCEPT my truck ('98 Mazda B4000). Sigh

What is a CD player that plays ONLY "Redbook" Cds called?
The idea, if I wasn't clear, is to burn .mp3 or .wav files to a CD using my iMac (10.5). The resulting CD will then be played on CD players that DO NOT recognize any format other than "Redbook".
Efforts thus have far have produced a CD burned from the .mp3 files that plays on my CD/DVD player which plays about any format known, but not the CD player in my truck. The CD burned from the .wav files will play on nothing I have...

Can someone for more computationally advanced than I tell me how to
copy using my iMac (10.5) either .mp3 or .wav files to a CD to be played
in a basic "Redbook" CD player? The .mp3 copied straight to CD works
just fine in my my multi-input CD/DVD player but does not work in my
Redbook player in either my truck or garage. The .wav copied straight to
CD doesn't play in anything...Many thanks in advance.
BTW:
The .mp3 files are from a vinyl (YES, black VD...) album that is one of
two or three in the world that has not been re-released as a CD...

Can anyone recommend someone who could service my N.E.W. P3 preamp?
Dennis Had at Cary used to provide service and upgrades but he has retired and Cary doesn't respond to my email...There are two issues:
1. I live in a very small town on the SW Oregon coast. There are no tube technicians that I know of...
2.
The pre is geting old and, I'm sure, could use a thorough going
over, cleaning, etc.. I'm at a stage where I can't do that sort of thing anymore. I'm
fortunate to get the right RCA into the right output...An advice, suggestions, etc. will be very appreciated.

I am currently
using a passive Creek OBH-12.
Sources are Squeezebox, DISH TV receiver,
CD/DVD, phono.
Amp is a Will Vincent triode ST70.
Speakers are 1971
Heresys with Bob Crites upgrades.
The problem: I need more gain
for both CD/DVD and DISH receiver. Gain for the Squeezebox is spot on.
Volume control for CD/DVD/DISH is almost 12:00 o'clock high, while 9:00
o'clock for the Squeezebox.
And I need a full featured remote. Due to SO's recent immobility this is an imperative...
All advice and opinions will be appreciated.

I am terribly deficient in physics, especially anything electrical. Therefore, I am seeking input as to the feasibility and practicality of two ideas I have for rewiring my H700 Heresys.
Can I use my left over 14 awg speaker wire (amp->speaker) for the internal wiring and can I connect my speaker wire (amp->speaker) directly to the crossover?
To my admitedly ignorant mind having all the wiring associated with the speakers to be the same brand/type would add to the seamlessness/smoothness of the resulting sound.
Problems I think I see: resistance between tweeter/x-over, sqwaker/x-over and bass/x-over. I could easily double the wiring from bass to x-over and half the wiring from tweeter to x-over.
Any enlightenment, education, opinions and suggestions will be appreciated.

Maybe familiarity. We've had it a long time, always with solid state amps and wonder 1) if someone has had experience with it driving tubes in general or a Dynaco ST-70 in particular or 2) if someone has a Dynaco ST-70 driving Heresys has a preamp he/she thinks is particularily synergistic.

New preamp is not that imperative. We've used the Creek with B&K ST140, Monarchy Audio SM-70 (both stereo and mono-block modes) and now the Will Vincent ST-70 and have not been unhappy. But the grass always seems greener...-

I use "Squeezebox" (mostly classical with some Americana via internet radio, not FM stations on the 'net). The analogue output is satisfactory (the equal to most FM stations) and the digital out is better (through a DAC). Internet connection is via Verizon DSL, independent of my computer.
Highly recommended...

We wonder what <$1000 preamp with remote would improve our already enjoyable sound enough to make us wnat to change?

BTW: Now have "new" Heresys tilted by placing a single 1 1/2" Mod Squad TipToe under the front edge
center. Excellent sound stage, instrument placing and (I think?) a bit more solid bass. Double basses and cellos
especially sound tighter/firmer.

Thinking about updating the crossover and have some questions:
Does the 700Hz crossover point pose any problems?
How does one access the crossover board in a Heresy?Would I have to remove a speaker or the entire rear of the Heresy?
And would any re-sealing (caulk, etc.) be necessary? As the Heresy isn't ported, I assume its a sealed design?
Sources for a new crossover? I've seen Bob Crites' website and am impressed...
