  1. Question for you guys - Do you set the RF7's to small or large in YPAO/Audyssey? How about the RC64?
  2. Thanks Tasdom! Yours too Terrible cell phone pics...a DSLR is on my short list of purchases.
  3. Well guys, I decided to get the RF-7ii's. I ordered them from www.acousticsounddesign.com along with the RC-64 and the RS-62's and although R&L Carriers did everything they could to botch the delivery, they finally made it here safe. Here's a pic. For some reason the forum clips my image, but if you click it you can see the whole image. I don't have the surrounds set up yet as the stands I am building for them are not yet done. After seeing the RS-62's I am glad I am overbuilding the stands, as these things are huge. Much much bigger than the RS42's they are replacing. Here are the stands in progress - will be black and have nice rounded edges when finished: I am planning on upgrading my subwoofer later this year, but for now, I am very happy. Need to run YPAO and calibrate everything, but I am going to be traveling and won't have time to do that until I get home.
  4. Well, I thought it was actually a pretty good deal considering the original cost and what I thought RF-7ii's were going for ($3200). Plus, no need to worry about shipping or anything like that. Now that I know that I can get ASD to ship me out a pair today for $2k (along with the other speakers I ordered), I think it doesn't make sense to get the old version...
  5. Hey, thanks Jason - these pics are just what I was looking for. So, it clearly is a noticeable difference between series 1 and 2 visually. I'm told it will be an audible difference as well. I do still have time to add RF-7ii's to my order with ASD...Decisions, decisions. I guess I misspoke earlier, I haven't actually taken delivery of the 83's yet because the seller, who is a coworker of mine, has been out of town. So do I disappoint him by not completing the deal, or spend the extra $500 and get the RF7's. I doubt he will have a hard time selling the 83's but we did agree to a deal in principle. I'm pretty sure I'd rather have the 7's. Tough call.
  6. I just purchased an RC-64ii and a pair of RS-62ii's from ASD - I reached out to them thanks to some recommendations in this thread, so thanks for that. Now, I know this is the RF-7ii owner's thread, but I have a pair of RF-83's and I have a question for you guys. I read that the cone color is different between the series 1 and series 2 - does anyone have a picture of the two together? Something like a shot with the RF-7ii's and an older RC-64, or vice versa, RF-83's with an RC-64ii? Thanks in advance
  7. Hmm...so it sounds like two or at most four 1/4 20 machine screws securing the speaker to the mount. Given the size of the fastener, that doesn't engender a whole lot of confidence. The engineer in me thinks those are more likely than not intended to secure the speaker to a level speaker stand, and not intended to be laterally loaded by tilting the mount. It would probably be ok, but I doubt it would take much load to shear the machine screws and I doubt there would be much warning if they were failing. So, it sounds like the friction pad mounting mechanism may be the better way to go, but given the indecision I think it will be best to wait until I actually have the speakers in hand before making a final decision. If there are 4 threaded inserts, I will consider the Omnimount 60 WB. If there are just two, I will almost certainly go for the Pinpoint. Thanks for your help guys. Now, what do you think of these for my side surrounds? They seem like quality stands and are relatively inexpensive. http://www.racksandstands.com/VTI-VSP-VI1044.html
  8. Thanks for all of the replies guys. I think I would like something with a bit more adjustability than 7 degrees, since the speakers will be mounted fairly high on an 11 foot wall. Now, that said, I would sacrifice a little adjustability if it meant my speakers didn't come crashing down off of the wall, if that is truly a concern. Youthman, you seem to think the side-grabbing friction pads would be a more stable mount for the speakers. How does the mechanism work? Does it tighten to the width of the speaker via some kind of threaded adjustment? Is there any chance of it marring the speaker's finish? Are there threaded inserts in the bottoms of the speakers for mounting purposes? With respect top-heaviness, with the 8" driver at the bottom I would think this effect is mitigated, but again I don't have the speaker in hand yet, so I can't hold it and feel whether or not this would be a problem. At 19" tall, it is definitely not a small speaker so I can see where that might be a problem. Is your concern that the OmniMount mentioned will fail completely, or that it will be difficult to keep the speaker in the position I want because the ball joint will be overwhelmed by the weight of the speaker sitting out an angle? Thanks again for your replies. Paul
  9. Hey guys, I ordered a pair of RB81's for rear surrounds. I'd like to mount these to my rear wall. I haven't got the speaker's in hand yet but I'd like to get the wall mounts ordered soon so they arrive within a few days of the speakers. It looks like most/all of the wall mounts I've seen are for 20 lb speakers, while the RB81's are 30 pounds. Does anyone have a recommendation on a quality speaker mount that will handle the RB81? Also, can you recommend a retailer? Thanks in advance, Paul
  10. Hey look at that! Thanks! It actually isn't all that bad looking at all... The only thing about the wall-mounted RS42 near the window is that there is a light switch right there. I am planning on recessing a few more lights in the ceiling above the circular area, I could move the switch at that time without too much trouble. Or, alternatively, I could just put both speakers on stands. Food for thought. Either way, thanks for taking your time to make up those pictures for me. Guess I need to search for an area rug!
  11. Youthman - Thanks for your input. I checked out your Home Theater room link, its exactly what I would love to do, if only I had the space. In the meantime I will make due with what I have. Wish I had the RF83's and RC64! Beautiful setup. Thanks for the compliments on the new home, also. With respect to your other comments, I actually had been considering getting an area rug for around the sofa. If I get one large enough this would allow me to run the wire to the side surround beneath the rug. I'm trying to picture how the speaker would look on a stand next to the sofa. With respect to your comment about a 'lively' sound and adding items to reduce echo, what would you recommend? For the rear surround speakers, I was planning on getting a console table for that wall, perhaps I could unobtrusively wall-mount a pair of speakers above that. I'll take a look at bookshelf speakers, I haven't researched these at all yet as i have been focusing on in-wall for the rear surround. As an aside, I find it ironic that I am looking for low visual impact surround speakers while I have a water-heater sized SVS subwoofer in the same room. I love the Z11. I'm in the process of getting my 2nd and third zones set up. Zone 2 will be the garage, where I will ceiling mount 2 CDT-5800's and run composite video to an LCD. The 3rd zone will likely be my deck/patio.
  12. Hey guys, long time Klipsch fan looking for your opinions on side and rear surround speaker placement/choice. Here's my situation - Bought a place a few months ago and have been trying to figure out how best to configure my home theater. I'm looking for 7.1. My setup is as follows: Yamaha RX-Z11 RF82 floorstanders RC62 Center RS42 Surround and... Here's whereI need your help. I purchased the RS42's when I bought the RF's and RC's (AD going out of business sale, score!), but if I had it to do again I might not have. You can see in the pics I currently have these sitting on top of my 82's (they are not wired currently). My original intent was to mount these at the top of the rear wall, facing slightly down at the seating area. I'm no longer sure I want to do this and would like some opinions on the following options: 1) Mount the RS42's like I had planned, towards the top of the wall angled down at the seating area - Pros - I already have the speakers and just need to run wire - Cons - potentially unsightly Sound quality as compared to option 2 (?) 2) Purchase and install a set of in-wall rear surround speakers and install them approximately ear-level in the rear wall -Pros: Least intrusive to living area Perhaps better sound (mounted at ear-level) - Cons - Can't take them with me when I sell the place If I went with option 2, I would get either R5800W or R5650S. Does anyone have an opinion they would like to share on one versus the other? Side Surround: Here's where it gets trickier. It would be relatively straightforward to mount either the RS42's or similar on-wall-mounted side surround speaker on the wall with the windows, however on the other side of the couch, there is no wall for another 15-20 feet. Options: 1) Mount RS42 (or 52 or 62) to wall on side of the room with windows. Buy/fabricate speaker stand to mount RS on other side of couch - Pros: Probably best sound (?) Least labor intensive (not opposed to doing some work however) Get to keep the speakers when I sell the place (also easier to upgrade them if/when I decide to) - Cons - potentially unsightly speaker stand sticking out like a sore thumb (?) - where to run the wire to the speaker on the non-window side? 2) Purchase in-ceiling speakers to mount above couch (CDT-5800C) - Pros - Least intrusive to living area - Cons - Can't take them with me when I sell the place Tougher to upgrade if/when I get the urge Sound quality (?) What do you guys think? Thanks for your time. Paul
  13. Hey all, I just picked up the following from a local audio-video shop. RF82 (2) RC62 (1) RS42 (2) I got the 42's because they didn't have any 52's or 62's (going out of business sale). My plan is to run them as my rear surrounds in a 5.1 system until I get a pair of RS62's to fill the rear surround duty, then move the 42's to side surround in 7.1. I know the driver size mismatch is less than ideal, but once I get the 62's for the rear surrounds, do you all think the 42's will function well as side surrounds in this system? If not, or if you have a suggestion other than RS62's let me hear it! Yamaha RX-Z11 powering everything. Also, on the lookout for a subwoofer. Thanks!
