  1. I spoke with Alex at eD today. He basically confirmed that a pro amp such as the ep2000 would work and that my avr would handle the "eq" so to speak. My sub is a DVC making it 4 ohms. Power should be less expensive being 4 vice 8 ohms.

  2. I appreciate the help. However I did look at all those amps already. Thadeuss do you own one of those amps? The thing is a plate amp is worthless to me and those Dayton rack amps are litered with reviews about how they don't put out rated power. In addition Mearly linking an amp does nothing to help me understand why I should pick said amp. Does anyone know why I should pick a specific amp or type of amp? Thx

  3. What about the ep amps that eD sells? Would those work? I checked out the rhythmik and o-audio amps you suggested and they only sell plate amps. I need a rack mount amp. Think I'll call eD today and see what they say.

  4. Well I just connected it to one channel of my Onkyo M-282. It doesn't seem to be bottoming out anymore. Perhaps my audiosource amp is either malfunctioning or just not good for a sub in general. Still playing with placement. There's really only 1 place this will fit in my room. The only question is which direction I face the port in. The bass seems very smooth, almost understated compared to my A5-350's. I'm not gonna get carried away with a review right now though. I'm gonna play a while then I may think about getting a monoblock amp for it. Right now it's using the channel I usually power my 6th channel with.

  5. Does the THT need some kind of eq device? Right now I have an 50 watt amp powering it. The amp is getting a signal from the subwoofer preout on the Onkyo. It's a 600 watt Rms driver but it's bottoming out with 50 watts. I'm wondering if the LFE channel is sending it signals it can't handle? Does anyone know if I need another piece of equipment here? Is the design of the tube such that it could cause the driver to bottom out with little power? Any help would be great. Thanks

  6. Ok.... I'll try that in a bit. Right now it's just in the middle of the room and it's booming. :) also did you have the mouth facing the front wall or rear wall?

  7. So I picked this THT up a couple days ago. I'm finally getting around to setting it up. My question is how do I go about corner loading it? Does the opening point towards the front or rear wall right up against a side wall? Does it get kitty cornered? Any help would be great. Thx

  8. Hm.......I'm gonna try once more.If a 40 year old recording sounds great(do we agree there is a 40 year old recording that sounds great?) Now, we have many new recordings that don't sound great(can we agree many new recordings sound very poor quality?)It was stated earlier in this thread that the industry uses room correction blah blah to achieve a top notch quality of sound.Sooo....if it works so well why did the old sound better in many cases, I say because the room correction and other gadgets do no better than a good room with 40 year old gear and recordings, just my opnion but I don't think I'm alone, maybe.......

Are you talking about vinyl record vs modern CD's? What recording means are you referring to from 1972 and before?

  9. Thank for pointing that out Bill. Makes some sense now. I wonder why they didn't compare apples to apples with the test. Seeing how the other amp rating came out im sure the XPA-2 would be right in line with the 300 anyway. I am curious to see if they come out with another line of amps since the discontinued the UPA line.

  10. This prepro will not be for everyone. If it is like their other products it will aimed at those more concerned with overall audio performance.

....and those that don't mind constant connectivity issues. lol

but to be fair about the price emtiva gave away those 40% off upgrade cards to all UMC-1 buyers so really the vast majority of the XMC's they sell will be for $900 not $1500. It's my belief that those cards ar the reason the xmc is at the $1500 price point. Cause the features do not point towards a $1500 pre pro. (1 HDMI our and 7 vice 9 channels)

Did you have connectivity issues with your UMC?

I've had my UMC over two years, and never any "connectivity" issues with ten different hdmi components. The amount of channels I'm sure impresses some people?? that's fine for them.Again, audio quality is the driving factor for a substantial number of enthusiast, but not all.Who knows, the thing may sound like crap, if it does I'll be one of the first to say so.

That's great that you never had connection issues. But don't try to down play that the issues were present for others. It's all over the Internet.

What are typin' about? play down? You still did not say you owned one? Oh...you read stuff, I see. Please show me one unit in the whole internet that has no complaints from anyone and I'll buy you a dvd of your choice.

I said I did not have any connection issues, that's playin' it down?,lol.I did not know it was all over the internet, we all know the internet is always reliable, again lol.Anywho...rock on, enjoy the beautiful music.

I apoligize for offending you FISH. That was not my intention. I do not own a UMC-1. I have considered it and in that consideration spent many hours reseaching it. Im not comparing the UMC-1 to other units with my previous post. I was simply pointing out one issue of the many the UMC-1 has had.

For those with further intrest on the seemingly painstaking process of "fixing" the UMC-1... here is a link to a thread by Big Dan himself. Remember these are not random internet trolls on this thread.... it's Dan Laufman President of Emotiva.

  11. So I was looking at the Emotiva website. They now have PDF files of amplifier tests that were conducted. It shows the XPA-5 and XPA-3 around 205-210 rms watts at 8 ohms per channel. The XPA-1 shows 500.5 watts rms. The XPA-2 however shows only 264 ish rms watts for each of the 2 channels. They claim it to be 300 at 8 ohms. Could that be why the XPA-2 is not currently available? Maybe they are going back to the drawing board on it? Im intrested in getting a nice 2 channel amp to complete my system so if anyone has a heads up on this situation I would love to hear it. thx

  13. That's great to hear. I do have an iPhone but wasn't aware of the app you spoke of. What's it called? Yeah I can't wait to get it up and running. Right now we watch mostly tv and all the wife's movies in the bedroom. My action and horror movies are saved for the HT. All we need now is a sub and the bedroom setup will be good to go.

  14. Well as intrigued as I am with the HK (because all the good things you guys are saying about them) I decided to go with the pioneer 1121. 2 big reasons. I like the AirPlay (for the wife) and I know how the 1021 sounds from my friends HT. I almost went with a marantz 6004 cause I'm super curious about marantz as well. But it was gonna be $100 more and I would lose AirPlay.

  16. It's so hard to compare sound to sound for me cause I only listened to the yammy with klipsch HD300's and Polk monitor 70's. Plus being my first avr I didn't have a frame of reference. I can tell you that the onkyo would seem to have a very true sound. I would'nt say warm or harsh but maybe middle ground. I listen to a ton of itunes music in my car and on my onkyo so thats really my only comparison unfortunately. A friend of mine had a pioneer 1021 with Klipsch rf82's and his HT did sound great but room size can change things alot IMO.

I know that for the cost of shipping back you can return avr's to onecall. Thats what I did with my 709. Basically a 30 day trial period. I liked the 709 alot but Gorm put his 3008 up for sale and I really wanted to try the audyssy multi eq XT 32 (since I run 2 subs). Cost me $30 to send the 709 back so really it was a great way to give it a try. Never sent anything back to Newegg but I know their retrun policy is basically the same as onecall. You can get a 100 opinions on the "sound" of these avr's but honestly none of them will mean Sxxx since the the room and speaker parameters won't be the exact same as yours is.

  17. I had the yammy 361 (I think that the model) that I snce gave to my father. Then in order onkyo 608-3007-HT RC180-709-3008. I also have an onkyo 509 in my livingroom. I went through the exact same situation that you are going through trying to decode between the the 709 and 809. Since I was running an XPA-5 at the time the power ratings had little meaning to me. It came down to a $300 price difference for extra features I just wasn't going to need. My move from the rc-180 to the 709 was based mostly on the ipod integration. I can also tell you that the x09 series on onko run vastly cooler than the x08 and x07 series. If your cabinet is very well ventilated then by all means you can go to accessories4less and purchase an older refurbished model with a 1 year warranty to save money. If your cabinet is not well ventilated I would not suggest going with any model older than the x09 series. Even when I wasn't using the amp section it would still get very hot.

For under $500 the 709 can be had and the internet radio works great. It's like anything else really in that it takes a bit of time to get used to it but I use it all the time for zone 2 (the room next to my HT is a home gym). I do still need to purchase another avr for the bedroom and I do want to try another brand like Pioneer, Denon, or Marantz just to see if I have been missing something. Onkyo has a model comparison chart on their website that makes it real easy to see what your getting when you upgrade from one model to the next. You may have looked at it already.
