  1. I don't have a target budget, but I would be looking for the best value.

I love the sound of our Pioneer receiver with its class-d amplifier section, but the new Pioneer SC 9x series seem to only support 9 channels so I'd still need to add an external amp.

You'll need an external amp no matter if you buy Denon, Marantz or Pioneer. Not sure if anyone makes a receiver with 11 built in amps. But, I've never looked. If you like Pioneer I would stick with them.

Looks like Yamaha made one, but I can't tell how old it is, just that it's discontinued and it doesn't support Atmos.

    Here's one:

  2. I might not have Atmos now, but every Atmos mix I've listened to as regular 7.1 has sounded awesome.

Very interesting. What is your best guess as to why?

Do you think maybe this is unintended consequences as Atmos just happens to mix down to 7.1, or is the sound given more attention because of Atmos considerations?

I wonder if your observation holds true when mixing down to 5.1?

No idea. Maybe because the attention taken to the mix itself. But I've listened to almost every Atmos mix and they've all sounded awesome. I'd have to check the newest Transformers movie though; can't recall if that was Atmos. If so, it would be the only one I haven't enjoyed.

Edit: I've listen to 5 Atmos mixes: Mad Max, Insurgent, John Wick, Transformers, and Mockingjay. I'm not sure how many there are now, I know there is a Gravity Atmos mix that's suppose to be excellent. I'm sure there are others. I liked of the ones I listed except Transformers....but I'll give that another listen too.

  3. Just finished Ultron and you were right Derrick, great bass. I kept the sub at -2 and listened to the whole movie at -8 and it was great. I still think there were some places that didn't necessarily sound right to me, but overall a much, much better experience than the movie theater I saw it in. I don't know if it dug deep, but it sounded good. Over all impressed.

  4. s I feared, the crappy audio I heard in the theater has made its way onto this release. Stupid Disney didn't even include an Atmos mix. I might not have Atmos now, but every Atmos mix I've listened to as regular 7.1 has sounded awesome.

I can't wait to hear your take on the audio portion of the movie.  Sometimes the DVD, BD vs 3D-BD all have different versions of the audio.  It can also change in certain regions.

So I just got done with the first 15 minutes or so. I am currently running my bass 10db hot @ -2, since Audyssey hates horns it always sets it too low for my liking. The bass is fine there, but the overall volume is wicked low. Had to turn up the volume to -8 to get levels I'm use to at -17 or so. Also, I noticed that some effects that I think should have good bass, like those futuristic weapons in the opening attack, seem to lack. I also noticed this in the theater. But, the overall bass content seems much better than the theater did. I will report back after I'm done with the whole movie tonight.

I'll post when I'm done tonight. Have the 3D and regular BD copies. Will just watch the regular tonight, not really in the mood for 3D. Although, that could change.

  6. Sounded great in 7.2

welcome to the forum. I thought the audio on this one was just ok. Not a reference disc by any means.

Agree. I actually thought 6 sounded much better. Ultrons on the system tonight and from what I've been reading I'm going to have to crank the bass up. 7. Avengers Age Of Ultron: Good story line and lot of good action. At this point in the series, all of the characters are well develop. No time is wasted building the characters like in the Fantastic Four released this past summer. Overall the movie is well done. Some people said the ULF was not great in the movie but, I can't disagree more. I think this Marvel movie has the most intense bass scenes.

That's good to hear....because the bass sucked in the theater. Looking forward to this tomorrow!

  8. and unless your using really power hungry speakers, external amps are overkill

I prefer the term headroom. Before you poo poo external amps, there's a lot that needs to be considered. Size of the room, efficiency of the speakers, listening levels, seated distance from speakers, crossover point and what your transient peaks will be (to name a few).

Never dumped on external amps, just said they were overkill. I can listen to very loud levels with my 4520 with no problem. However, I can see if someone would want external amps. I've had external amps on my setup before, when I had NHTs, and know they can make a difference.

  9. You stated that this would be 75% HT, yet your looking for something that will make the other 25% sound better?? That seems bassackwards to me. I think either Marantz, Denon or Pioneer would certainly be a substantial upgrade from your Sony. I've never liked Sony receivers, but like so many things in life, that's a personal preference. Honestly I've run separates and receivers, and unless your using really power hungry speakers, external amps are overkill. Now, a separate preamp, can make a difference; however, if this is mostly for HT, I don't think it matters. I would look for either a used receiver from Marantz, Denon or Pioneer, or wait till you can spend a few grand on a nice 7 channel amp and modern processor.

    Good luck

  10. They look nice. Not a huge fan of the foam around the Atmos speaker - seeing as I like my speakers naked, this would drive me crazy. I think I'd rather add the Atmos 140s to existing speakers. But, Atmos is so far down the road for me since i just bought my 4520 in Feb. I will say, if the 140s had been available then I might have bought a Atmos receiver. Oh well.

  11. I'm thinking of building. but not his. can't afford. and dont wanna order woofers and wait for that kind of time. plus his sounds the way it does cause he has tons of wattage that them babies need to run full range. i have no desire to need that kind of power for mains, and also he has the mini dsp and all that stuff. i dont wanna do that either. you get even further in the hobby and to me it may even be harder to just enjoy.

Oh I understand, lol. Luke is the biggest basshead I've ever met. And, as you know, he's also one of the most generous people you'll ever meet.

  12. but this time at a friends house....scrappy knows who

ohh man i can only imagine. he's on another level from probably anyone on this forum. i can't afford that kind of bass. maybe my 10 18's will get me like 85% of that. id be happy with that. i tell you what, i would love to have his mains more than anything. what them are capable of is just unreal.

Yeah his mains are amazing. AE Speakers did a write up of his mains and center. I'll get the link and post it for you.

Here it is Scrappy, and every one else who might be interested.

  13. The obese ladies were kept well fed to have nourishing breast milk for immortal Joe dude and his cohorts. No cows? How about lady milk? That's how I perceived it. Or they have to breed the new immortal war boys somehow- maybe that's how he also feeds his giant 'army' - keep them stronger than the peasants below that get a taste of water here and there.

He had that huge hydroponic / greenhouse setup - hoard the veggies, Hoard the lady milk, hoard the water, Total power over the people.

    Good to know!

  14. He has a write up of them on here, I'd just search for Nismo, look for threads he has started. Love the red bias light, I have a LED strip on my stand. Looks like you put it on the TV, I might have to look into doing that also. My only suggestion would be to move the towers away fro the walls. I was always taught that speakers should be away from walls...letting them "breathe" if you will. I'm sure they produce more lower end in the corner. It's all a matter of personal preference. I would recommend a sub crawl though. Make sure your sub is in the best location for response.

    Nice looking room!!
