  1. Cool deal. I will stay at 80. A lot of that makes sense and explains why everyone enjoys them over the 82. More cone space means more air moved. As the xover rolls off below 80 the dual 10's are going to handle that better than dual 8's.

Can't wait to hear them next weekend.

  2. Makes sense.

I guess the hard part is seeing such a large tower with dual 10's crossed at 80 hz. Makes you wonder what the 10's are for! Or is the large part of the 7 sound over the other models the larger horn and the 10's just add more cone to cover the sounds the horn isnt?

  3. Crossover question.

My first thought is to run the 7ii's set on "small" in the Denon and 60hz. I would think they could do 60 fine and I will have an amp with plenty of power. That will send everything below 60 to the subs for those two channels. I'm guessing 45hz would be too aggressive? Just wondering what you guys are using.

I currently run the 82ii's and 62ii center at 80hz but an audio calibrator had recommended even the 82ii's on 60hz and small.

  4. OP, Great decision on the 7's and 64 (future purchase) I pretty much have a similar setup as you. (minus dual subs which i want and will get soon). Emo makes great gear but as you pointed out, it's not really even close for price/performance ratio. The ATI 2005 is around $2600 so grabbing the same amp under the outlaw name is a no brainer at $1599. Despite what some may say, when you go to the 7's, they love power! There are some impedance dips that most AVR's can't handle (not saying yours can't) but the headroom is unbelievable. Trust me, I've been there and done that

Great input, thanks. I missed a used 7700 Outlaw today on ebay ($1200) because I was travelling...

  5. Here is my thing. A new speaker model, like and amp, is not necessarily guaranteed a good result with a "redesign". What I know for a fact is, I like my ref ii speakers, and the 7ii and 64ii have been raved about for years. I will buy them, discount or not, and move on. The premier "redesign" which may include new big boys may or may not be an "improvement". Once again, "improvement" with horns is in the eye of the beholder. Some would want them more mellow, some not. I am happy with the current sound.

In my eyes, once I have the 7ii and 64ii, along with what I already have, I hope to never buy speakers again, at least not for a long time.

  6. And see for me, watching blu-rays between -1.0 and +1.0 mostly, I know we are pushing. If anything, I like the idea of headroom.

Interstellar is a good example of something recently. Most scenes I am sure were not too bad, but the action scenes with the crazy organs going on, I'd image the peaks are pretty good in those scenes. Even worse if you were running 60 or 40hz ont he fronts.

  7. Well, you already know what to expect from Outlaw (assuming the 7500 is same sound as the 7125) so if it were me, I'd look around for used Emo amp and if you prefer the Outlaw (or Denon) then you could resell it and not take a big hit. Some dont like buying used though.

Depending on the $$$ next week (bonus), I will either trade in the XPA-3 for an XPA-5 ($620), or sell the XPA-3 outright and buy the 7500 (probably cost $1000). All in all, Id rather have the outlaw, I'm just a fan of their ATI built gear. It's not a knock on Emo, just we all have our preferences :)

Or, I may just sit on the bonus for a few weeks and grab the 7500 anyways. I have some more amp reading to do. Im really under no pressure to sell the XPA-3 anyways.

  8. Hadn't planned on it. The 5 channels amps I am looking at our for future expansion, and it was part of the plan anyways. In my reading most seemed to suggest against bi amping so I have not really messed with it.

Taking the Outlaw 7500 for example, it is pushing 240w/channel at 0.1% distortion, while being rated at 200w/channel at 0.05%. Thats a ton of juice and it has two transformers so there is plenty in reserve. Just figured Id hook em up straight and save the other channels for later.

  9. Yeah, it took me a few weeks to get current towers right. Spacing was tough too, too far out and it was just weird. Def toed in toward MLP sounded best. I also find I liked them setup somewhat equidistant. I think my towers are 8.5 feet apart, and 10.5 feet from MLP. Will start the same with the 7ii's.

Evidently, one request from Gen 1 to Gen 2 was for Emotiva to lower the gain. Since doing that, the hiss is gone from what I've read.

Another nice Amp, at about $1599 (up from $999 for XPA-5) is the Outlaw 7500. I still havent ruled it out, you can get a b stock for $1479. It is a hoss, and I will have to decide in the next week or two which one I want. I owned an Outlaw once, and I love them, so it'll be a tough decision.

  10. I found mine like room to breathe in all directions. Best was about 18" from back and side walls, but I moves to 12" side and back walls to conserve space in family room. Once I finish HT build, they'll move out in open more.

Let me know how the XPA5 you're getting works with the 7ii's. I'm still mulling over xpa2 for my rf7 fronts and another for my rears.

Never heard an Emo set up... But always read great reviews! Will stay tuned for your thoughts!

It was nice to see the 82ii's and 7ii's are the same depth, the 7ii's are just a little more wide and a good clip taller. Mine of course are toed in now, but I have about 11" from the wall. With those dual subs sticking out farther, I could probably get away with another inch or two off.

I have been happy with the XPA-3 and the 82ii's, so I think the XPA-5 will do a good job. I think their generation 1 amps had some hiss with Klipsch, but the gen 2 I have is quiet.
