  1. I had the quintets and traded up to what is similar to the synergy. I've got the sb2s/ss1/scr2s. There really is no comparison. The quints are very powerful and good for HT but were just not that good for music - and I am no audiophile! One thing to watch for - I have an issue with boomy bass caused by putting my sb2s in my bookcase type ent. center. In fact, I may well return them to get the SFs. I think you have to put the sbs on a stand. I just don't think they are going to work well in any kind of compartmentalized space in a bookshelf. Just a shelf is a different issue, though.

If you're going to take up floor space with stands anyway, you might as well make the "stand" help extend bass, etc. I for one do not understand why people buy bookshelf speakers and then place them on stands if they can pay the same money to get floor standing speakers that normally will sound better. That was my thought as well. I originally got the bookshelves because of my wife's dislike of speakers. They were a measured improvement over the quintets but the boomy bass is a problem.
  3. I currently have the SB2s and they are on my bookshelves. Only problem is that since the port is rear firing, I'm getting boomy bass. I'm trying to decide between putting them on stands and returning them and getting SF1 or SF2 floorstanding models? Any thoughts or suggestions?? thanks.
  4. A dilemma - I bought the bookshelf KSB2s but when put in the bookshelf, I end up with boomy bass. So, now I'm considering either putting them on stands or getting floorstanding KSF1s or 2s. I'm not sure which to do? Any suggestions or plus/minus would be appreciated.
  5. Actually, I went and checked. DTS is superior. Oooops - that's why I'm a newbie. www.dtsonline.com

I have watched The Matrix and Shrek so far and they sound awesome in Dolby Digital. When I have tried to select DTS the HK does not switch. Last night and this morning I started fiddling with settings on the dvd's menus. When I checked the digital audio output settings, it seemed correct at"stream/pcm". Next I switched the Down Mix from "Lo/Ro" to "Lt/Rt" and voila the HK would allow DTS play. So I begin listening to Shrek this morning(since I cant find the DTS logo on the Matrix DVD), in DTS and guess what? I am getting sound from right front, center and sub only. Suggestions? Why do you want to listen to it in DTS rather than in Dolby Digital Surround? I thought DDS was superior?
  7. In trying to educate myself, I found a site called www.audioholics.com. They say that horn systems aren't rec. for home use basically. Why? Any thoughts?
  8. I'm going to be using SCR2s as my surround speakers in my HT setup. In my setup, the couch is against the rear wall. Any suggestions regarding how far from the rear wall to place the SCRs? (i.e 6", 1', etc). Also, as far as the spread between the two, should it be comparable to the spread between the mains? Thanks.
  9. So, looks like the ceiling mount of the SS or the SCR is superior to putting the SBs on the end tables! Wow, when I started this process, I never would have come up with that!!! Especially since when I looked at the SCRs for the ceiling, I didn't think they would make good surround speakers. (you know the show could've helped me with this stuff!) Before I get the ceiling speakers and start cutting - are there any downsides to using these? It is obviously a more permanent addition. Thanks - yet again! 10. Thanks for responding Klipschhog - Hopefully my Gators will get to see your Tigers in the SEC championship game!! Anyway, the room is about 14' wide and 25' long. It is a rectangle if you will. The long sides of the rectangle are the walls (25' long). One end of the rectangle is a sliding glass door that takes up most of that end. The other end of the rectangle is open and leads to a dining room/kitchen. The entertainment center is along one of the 25' walls and close to the end with the sliding glass door. I'd say the center of the tv/audio is about 8-10 feet from the end with the sliding door. The couch is against the opposite wall facing the ent. center (i.e about 14 feet away.) So, not the best acoustical setup. I'm planning on using the SBs as surrounds and putting them on the end tables next to the couch (the end tables are pretty big). The only other thing I could do would be to put the SSs on the same wall that the couch is on (my wife if NOT in favor of this - in fact that's why I'm not getting towers for the front . . . yet). Even if I went with the SS, I'm not sure what kind of effect I would get from them if they are on the wall at the same distance as I sit instead of "behind" where I sit. Am I better off with the SBs on the coffee table?? I know these are newbie questions but thanks for your help.
  11. I'm thinking of purchasing 4 SB-1s (or 2s) and an SC-.5 to replace my quintets (i'm keeping the 10" sub). Putting speakers on the wall for surrounds isn't going to happen - so I figure I'll put SBs on the coffee tables next to the couch along the back wall. Any issues with that kind of a setup? Also, let's say I did use the SS Surrounds, they would have to go on the same wall that my couch is up against - i.e. the "back" wall. Would they even work properly there? There is no side wall on the right and a sliding glass door on the left. Thanks in advance
