The original Reference speakers (i.e. the RF-3 and RF-3II) had solid MDF front baffles. Their successors (the RF-35, RF-82, and RF-82II) also have solid MDF baffles, but with added plastic trim pieces on top. i find the claimed baffle improvements a bit disingenuous. After all, if the plastic trim pieces are such a bad thing, then why did they add them to models that replaced the RF-3 / RF-3II?

The baffle is just a part of the speaker, not good, not bad from a SQ point with the Reference line.  Some people may care about the cosmetic of a baffle, not a major point for  me since I leave the grills on.

    This is baffling

  2. As far as competition, my buddy who works at Magnolia came over to my house Thursday night to hear my system. He said they were a little bright for his tastes.......go figure though, he has the BW CM9's. I've never heard the CM9's but I have no doubt that while his may sound better for music, the RF7II's will easily best his for HT applications.

Thanks for the clarification Bill. So both are good? Would you bitstream or pcm? basically, which one is better?

  4. ok, I ordered this player and had my friend come over to A/B this player blinded, vs my Sony s5100. I watched 10 mins of 3 different movies, then he did also. Weird that we both picked the oppo for all 3 movies. Being a computer gamer, maybe that was the reason I picked the oppo because I'm used to anti alising and the filtering capabilities of a high end video card. The images looked sharper and more fluid. I was against the hype of the oppo, but I am man enough to say I was wrong. Build quality is also what people have described. Flame away however, that's just my opinion.

Thanks for your insight. I'm thinking about getting one for myself. A side note, how do you like that Outlaw Model 7500?

Definitely try it out for the 30 day trial period. I absolutely love my outlaw 7500!! I see you have an xpa, thinking of switching out?

  6. I want that new marantz pre amp. 7702. That's going to be my next purchase. I know balanced doesn't matter except for long runs but I just want to lol. Let the wasteful spending begin. Oh, and another plus is that I'll get audessey x32

  7. Scrappy, your placebo could be someone else's holy grail. Some people don't even know what distortion or clipping even sounds like. I'll try and find that article talking about the rf82's and how they sounded better the more power the reviewer fed it.

  8. I agree, amps are not for db levels, its about dynamics and clarity. I also agree about ATI, love my outlaw! 7II need an amp to make them really shine. Ymmv....but I doubt it
