I don't think that you would want to position rear speakers very far apart or much higher than ear level. Remember that if you make the rear speaker spacing/height that much different than the fronts, you will make the soundfield (soundstage) uneven (unbalanced) as well. Have you considered floor stands? They would certainly be easier to work with than wallbrackets as they don't require drilling numerous holes til you get it right, or wire hiding either for that matter.
