  1. I was just curious. I have never had any complaints from my neighbors (wife excluded). I have been living here for 25 years and know just about everybody. We actually live in two houses, side by side. We bought the second house for my dear departed mother-in-law and when she died we had gotten used to the extra space. Hard to come by in downtown San Jose, but we got them cheap 20 years ago.

100 db is not that loud if you have clean music. From what I read, damage does not start below maybe 120 db.

  2. I am curious on how you deal with neighbors when you crank up the sound level. I gave up on my La Scalas and went to the dark side. JBL 2245s in 828s with 515s and 1005s above that. Needless to say, I have ample clean dBs. I am fortunate in that my wife and I occupy two houses (side by side), but she complains about the sound level. My tenants, next door and the people across the street dont complain at all. My favorite listening level is in the range of 100 dB. What do you locals have to say?

  3. I got my 304 from Origin LIve (http://www.moving-coil-cartridges.com/index.htm) but they don't seem to have them any more. However, these people claim to have the 103's (http://www.hifi-regler.de/shop/denon/denon_dl-103.php?SID=bc5b5e561146bb39d657dde02979bec3#). I have no complaints with my 304. It is a very low output (.2 mv) but my Rowland preamp has plenty of gain to drive it. I liked it so much that I bought a spare just in case. Of course, I felt the same about the Ortofon X5-MC but wound up trading one of them to Fini for his busted Black Widow.

  4. The real question is why pay some one else for something you can do yourself for little money. His speaker cables are nothing more than 12 ga mag wire with spade connectors. I have been making my own IC's by wraping 24 ga mag wire around 3/8 caulk backer and terminating them into Eichman (sp) bullet plugs. I am not sure that this is worth the while. My intor to altec horns was a trip to the ChiTown horn meet where one guty was driving his A7's with a Gainclone and using 24 ga twisted pairs terminated with Rat Shack RCA's. Not bad.

  5. When I shipped my Rowland amp (135 pounds) back ro the factory for some referb, they recommended that I put polyethylene foam between the bottom of the trannie and the shipping crate. They must have learned from experience since it did not come that way.

  6. My neighbor has a late 50's early 60's designer Khorn and a somewhat matching University (I think) buried in her garage. She has long since gone to (1970's) JBL system driven by Mac, so at least she has some taste. What sort of ballpark value is there on something like this? I have tried to talk her into parting with them but she is reluctant. I don't wnat them since I have gone to the Dark Side (Altec).

  7. Serial #'s 13R186/7. I bought them in 1978 from Magnolia in Seattle. They are in the original unfinished state and are in pretty good condition. After 30 years they have a few knicks on them but nothing major. I would prefer not to ship bucause it is a pain in the ... to pack them up. Not sure what I am willing to let them go for. No cut throat price but no primal dona either. If you are interested I can take sone pictures and send them out. I also have a pair of JBL 4638's that I would like to unload. I have run out of storage space and I want to blow out the wall between the spare room, where this stuff is stored, and my listening to get more listening room. Some assembly may be required, since I have not reassembled them from pulling the original AA's and replaceing them with Al's. Al's are not for sale since I am now using them in another system.

  8. A word of caution about VPI record cleaners. I have a 16.0. The problem with it is that the fluid is sucked into the base of the box which is made of particle board. The moisture eats the box. Basic fundamental flaw. I dont know how the later models are made but I would be suspicious.

    :Lets see, 828 cabs $200

    515Bs 450

    1005s 500

    288s 250

    811/902s 200

    xover 100

    sum $1700

Probably does not have the bass slam of a Khorn but it beats the H out of the mid range. My Klipsch credentials are 78 La Scalas with ALKs.
