google audyssey dynamic eq for a good explanation.  in short at volumes below reference we hear sound differently than at reference.  bass tends to be too low and surrounds can be hard to hear.  DEQ is a solution that maps how we hear and augments the bass and surrounds as needed to sound "right."  nothing makes surrounds sound better at say -30 volume.

I hope I'm not driving you nuts but I have a few more questions :)

What volume is considered "at reference"?

So how do I get DEQ?  Is it my receiver?  Or an added equalizer? Pre Amps (I have no idea what those are I have just heard the term a lot lol)

I have found the transformer movies to have great surround.  twister excellent still gravity is the ultimate test.  top gun has many goodflybys

I will try gravity again.  The first 20 minutes I need to map out, because the fronts were spot on but the rears weren't getting the action I was expecting.

part of dynamic eq boosts the surrounds at lower volumes.  since u rarily listen that loud i was suggesting bumping up the surrounds a db or 2 and seeing if it sounds bette

Okay I will bump them up a lil bit (I understood that part :D ).  Im not totally sure what dynamic eq is.  Is that the receiver lowering the surrounds? or the mix?

At less than reference volume some sound is a bit skewed.  Audyssey, found on some receivers has a dynamic eq that boosts not just bass at lower volumes but the surrounds too.  This deq feature is not unique to just Audyssey.  I find it makes a big diff personally and love it fyi.

    uhhhhhh...huh?

If your avr does not have this you may want to boost your surrounds a db or 2 to compensate I'm curious how the surround sweep sounds now?

Well we watched guardians of the galaxy vol 2 last night.  Loved loved a lot of the effects all around us.  The fireworks at the end especially.  Also the last 2/3 chapters of Unbreakable sounded fantastic, especially when he is flashing into the other peoples lives.

I really wish I had a specific (very specific) sound sweep scene to listen to.  Should I get Twister?

They are completely and totally awesome on the wall.

Klipsch knows their sxxx and builds the best surrounds Ive heard.  This version is sealed and that means no ports.

There is a keyhole mount on the back.  This allows them to hang off a proper mount.  Theres many versions but I used a snap toggle.  3/8" size they are rated for 200lbs+.  Mine have never come off and have been bumped plenty.  Installation requires a 1/4" drill bit and hole then you slide the snap toggle in, snap it off and screw it in.  5 min max per hole really about 2min.  Amazon.com.

No problem, I can handle that...

Ok I admit I overlooked that you got the real surrounds and dumped the cutouts!  How do they sound so far?  Onwall will increase bass and midbass.  ☺

They sound fantastic!  A huge upgrade.  More importantly has been your advice to move the couch and change the placement of the rears!!

Soooo...I can put those rears flat on the wall?  I will have to give them a sound test first obviously.

  6. Hey guys!

Well here we are, only a few short weeks and I have been able to take my theater from above average to some next level sh*t!  Well for me anyways, for you guys its childs play I'm sure!

We gave it the official test tonight with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, what an unbelievably huge difference all of this has made!  I wish you guys could come here and help me talk it to another level lol (but spend YOUR money on ME of course)

    Whats next?!?  I say seating.....

By angles i mean the diagram showing how to layout the speaker positions.  Angling them towards the position is not critical with the bipolars but where to place them is so guesstimate based on your room and layout and the 7.1 diagram

I did this, the rears are angled towards the sweet spot but I am hoping they will sound just as good flat to the wall, otherwise they are going to be a pain to mount.

I looked up speaker brackets on amazon but they all say max weight is 10lbs....these are 15 at least.

That's my dilemma too.  I don't know if having a new projector with an old PS3 is the issue?  Is it the receiver that's missing the handshake?  Interestingly enough, when I switch to AppleTV, it ALWAYS works perfectly.  Never had the screen turn blue but I OFTEN have it turn blue (just did it last night) when powering up the system with PS3 as the source.  It's always a pain to get them to sync up.  Sometimes I have to switch inputs on the projector, sometimes it's switching inputs on the receiver.  Sometimes I have to turn everything off and then back on again.  Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

Thats exactly what I go through. If I remember right I even bypassed the receiver all together, I can't remember if it did any good!  It must not have.

And I can forget trying to put in a 3D blu ray....

    Hmmm this warrants further investigation!

Well any AVR can do this job that has 7.1 channels.  To start a conversation about making a change requires that you tell us why....just to see what might be better, to improve something, to avoid something, to seek out a particular benefit?  That would help with recommendations.  If you are just saying hey what's out there and what do people recommend, there are actually some recent dedicated threads to that specific topic already out there.

I just wanted to know if what I have is good enough tbh.

  10. You know, this reminds me.... The HDMI cable I have running from my receiver to the projector I think is a problem (Unless its the receiver itself or the projector itself).  It plays movies from the Apple TV just fine, however the blu ray player can be an issue when playing 3D movies (not that we even have a desire to do that anymore).  At times it just wouldn't play anything if I put in a 3D movie.  And whenever its displaying the main bluray menu (not the movie menu) the screen constantly flickers...like white static lines will go from the bottom of the screen to the top, it also does that when playing a 3D movie.

Acoustic treatment is a whole subject requiring a lot of discussion but the basic gist is, you need panels where reflections are strong.

This tends to be from the front L, C and R speakers.  So someone takes a mirror....yes a hand mirror, and holds it on the left wall roughly half-way between the central listening position, and the speaker itself.  The mirror is moved until at the seated position, you "see" that speaker in the mirror.  The mirror is at the reflection point for that speaker at that seat.  You do this for the L, C and R speakers, and then note where they are on the walls.  You can often cover all 3 speakers on the side with one 2x4 (foot) panel.  Sometimes it takes 2 per side.  You would do the same for the right side.  Yes, you need a helper for this, you can't hold the mirror and sit at the same time.  I use a light of some sort on the speaker to help make finding it easier in the mirror.

I keep the mirror flat on the wall, right?  THis I can do.  The right wall will be a problem because of the poster boxes there

I would recommend 4" panels if in the room there will only be a few, you cannot have too much 4" absorption (you can, but that's a ton of panels).   2" panels are a bit cheaper and will also work.  The difference is how low it absorbs.  At 2" panels, it goes down to roughly 250hz and a bit lower but the abosrption is low down below 250.  a 4" panel will get you closer to 100hz, with a bit under that too.

If you were telling me this face to face you would see a complete blank stare...and then probably just do it yourself.

Is there a link to a tutorial you like explaining this?  Im a little lost (Lol I hope I'm not getting on everyones nerves)

The side surrounds at the ceiling is what is really killing it now.  The back surrounds should be closer together (I think) but that's not likely the big problem.  The Bose are too high up to give you the "sweeping" sound you want.

Buy some cheap wire if you don't have it, and pull those bose off the wall, and add some wire and try out spots just above ear height.  It will be night and day imo.

Remember, you'll have the option to wall mount them all, or even use stands if you prefer or find that a location off the wall is a bit better.  I think on the wall will work well for all of them.

I think its really hard to see but I did pull the bose of the walls and popped the polks out as well.  Put the sides basically horizontal to my ear but a little above.  I don't know if something is wrong with me lol but I noticed only some difference.  I will say its a massive pain in the neck to move those polks at an angle because they keep falling over.

And I am going to test that first 20minutes of gravity again.  I get so confused on what setting to put the receiver on, I don't think I had it set to 7.1, I think it was 5.1.  I am forever messing around with all the different options (movie "action" movie "thriller"...all choices), it kind of gets irritating because I don't know what the heck I am doing lolol.

If i offered to ship 2 acoustic panels to every Klipsch member in the color they prefer for free and if they dont like them return them. ...i think 98% would keep them.   They are that important.

Question:  What acoustic panels do you use?

  15. 15 minutes ago, Youthman said:

I have a feeling they will be a significant improvement over your current surrounds.  Don't forget to rerun your room calibration as the Klipsch will likely be much more efficient than your current surrounds.

I feel like I am running it everyday lol. Its nice that it does that though, the automatic YPAC or whatever its called on my Yamaha.
