Why is it that when I listen to (for example) Despicable Me, everything is so beautiful and crystal clear, but when I watched the Watchmen, the sound was a lot more flat sounding, with dialogue seeming to low and I wasn't being thumped in the chest with the bass.

What is your setup, ie 5.1, 2.1, etc?

I went to 5.1 a few years ago because TV is now 5.1.  The 2.0 speakers were just miserable in translating the 5.1 broadcast, dialog was weak sounding, no bass.

I will still guess the electronics of your AVR is not sending the signal the way you think it would.

    It's 7.1.

I am going to do some more looking around tonight or tomorrow.  It gets a little frustrating sometimes when 1 movie doesn't sound as amazeballz as another.

  2. BDP is Bluray disc player and in the settings for audio there should be some options for PCM, bit stream processed, or unprocessed.  It is easy after you look. :)

Looking?  What am I, the Pope?  LOL.  :P

Okay I will give it a looksy....

Lemme ask one more stupid question...

    I'm such a novice sometimes.

Next steps are to swap out your sub cable and recheck the settings in your receiver to see if something has changed.

    From post 4

You can lead a horse to water.........................................................

    Sigh.....

  4. Now that's funny.  I really don't use those presets for Hall, action, drama ect.  I use the Dolby, DTS and stereo.  All ch  stero always sounds great but the sub should activate without using it.  I make sure I go into setting and set speakers to small with a crossover and on the BPD, bitstream everything unprocessed.  This way the avr is running the show.  I use to also not use the auto-on function of the sub and just leave it on.

Ummm, would you mind explaining that in layman terms, I am afraid I am way behind the times.  Told you I deserve the MORON award.

    What is:

    BPD

How do you "bitstream everything unprocessed"?

What do you mean  "the avr is running the show"?

  5. Aaaaand the MORON of the year award goes to me I think.

So the replacement sub arrived today:  To be clear I was replacing my SW-12 ii with a SW-112 Reference series 12".  Now I first ran the test tone automatic set up feature on my Yamaha RX-V675.  It made some noise, but honestly I was nervous, it didn't sound strong to me.

So I put in my favorite test Blu-Ray, which is the first Despicable Me and I skip right to chapter 2.  I sit back and wait for my squeals of delight....except...nothing...the sub isn't firing.  WTF?!?  So I start trying 50 million random things, and one of those things I try is changing the "program" setting on the receiver...it switches from "action" to "spectacle" to whatever and I can see on the front of the receiver which speakers are being used and the damn Sub woofer lights isn't coming on...until...I get to "7 ch surround sound" and BLAMO it turns on.  ....I was very happy...until I started thinking...and thinking.........wait a second.......that means the sub was fine?  Please god no....so I hook back the old sub and....it fires up just fine.

Now I feel like a primo moron.  But why wasn't the sub playing test tones? Why do I always panic like this?

He is the question of the day, and I would really REALLY love to know you honest opinion dear friends:

****Is the SW-112 a worthy upgrade from the SW-12?

I feel a little nauseous waiting for your replies.... uggg....

  6. I got a few of them old subs. Got a SW-12 and the amp took a dump, I found someone parting out a SW-15 and I put that amp in it....it got that 12" woofer woofing. Got it cheap, so I figured what the heck... I'll give it a try.

Also got a SW-15.... they sound good for the money I have in them...

    Good luck

    MKP :-)

Okay, thats really good to know!  Perhaps it will live in the garage for a little while.

You know, you also mention moisture...we had the basement flood...5 times in the new house in these past few months.  After $1.200 we finally figured out that it was concrete in the sewer line.

The subwoofer never actually got wet because its on top of a sound pad, but I am sure it didn't help.

I was only speculating.  But it would not be helpful if moisture got in there.  And CECAA850 is also correct, 20 years of service and moving and such is a really good life expectancy.  I don't know supercooldude, it may be time to retire your venerable sub and think about another one.

I hate to just through this one out, do you think it has any value?

Well I am by no means a technician.  So I couldn't even tell you that it is broken or not.  There happen to be different levels of tech heads and such everywhere.  Attempt to sell it cheap if you feel that is what you want.  As you know, forums are just a place to pass ideas and some knowledge.  For all any of us know, just tapping the back of the panel, or jiggling a wire could temp fix it.  In the end, the choice is yours sir.  Best of luck.

Thank you so so so much all of your help!

  10. Your sub is right at 20 years old.  I wouldn't invest a nickel in resurrecting it.

It was just a scene from shrek.  It has been really touchy, especially dragging it from upstate NY to the city, then to my classroom and blasting it like crazy then back home where it sat throughout a 2 month renovation (lots of dust).  It worked fine up until this week when I noticed it not "speaking".

***THe sound coming out of it was bass but honestly, just really "unhealthy" sounding bass.  I don't know how to describe it.

  11.

I wouldn't really call it "sound" it was just really low rumbling pulsing. And the test tones will not play out of it. You could not make out any dialogue whatso ever. It sounds sick and sad

    What exactly were you playing?

Click on this and you will hear it, but not hear the low low bass frequencies

  12. You really shouldn't be able to get dialog out of it.  How did you play test tones and at what frequencies?

What is your budget for a sub?

Oh, okay.  I am just using the standard frequencies from my yamaha -v675 receiver.  It worked when I initially set up my theater, so nothing has changed.  I even purchased a new sub rca cable, it didn't work so I switched back to my old cable and still nothing.

But my budget is so small I really shouldn't even be contemplating it, but ya know, its been a dream of mine since I was 19 to have my own home theater and I want it to be as perfect as it can be on a shoestring budget.  $400 is my absolute limit.  The sw 112 is the old version I think so its only $369 on amazon.  I know I am probably getting WAY ahead of myself.....

  13. OK, if you have sound now and didn't previously then the sub is ok.  Next steps are to swap out your sub cable and recheck the settings in your receiver to see if something has changed.

Just curious.....what about this if I need to replace it?

  14. Welcome to the forum.  To be sure it's not your receiver or cable, find a portable cd player or the like that has rca outputs and hook that to your sub.  Play some music and see if the sub makes any noise.  If not, you've eliminated everything but your sub amp.

Okay I did that.  I hooked up a really old DVD player and played a shrek DVD, putting the audio through the sub.  It was really badly garbled and thumpy sounding.  Couldnt really make out the dialogue at all...thats really GOOD right [sarcasm]?  I tried to embed a video of it but now that I listen to it you cannot hear the low rumbling at all.

Now what do I oh masters of sound?

  15. Howdy gang,

This is my first post so please be patient if I am talking about things that are common knowledge.  I...I am not a smart man....

So I have had a SW-12 II since 1995 I believe, and I love it so.  The rumbling.  The power.  Ahhhh joy. We moved to NYC some time ago and I had to put it in storage, ie my parents house, for about ummm 12 years or so, then I just started using it in my class room 2 years ago.  We finally bought a house and now I can rev it up in all its glory!

The problem is, as I have always suspected, the RCA inputs on the back are touchy.  And now, don't seems to be working at all!  Has anyone ever had this problem??  Can it be fixed?  The green light comes on in the front but nothing comes out when I perform the test tone operation on my receiver.

I have to tell you that since buying the house money is tight...well more gone than tight...actually more "holy crap the kids need to get a job" than gone.  So.....since I was thinking...and please god don't kill me, about replacing it with the moderately priced 12HG Synergy Series 12 inch 300W sub.  Now I know its not the high end stuff you guys have but I really hope this is would be a decent replacement.

Thanks for the help my friends......
