You might also ask Roy if you can simply replace the vents/tubes with another 18" woofer wired in series, which should give you deeper extension and more output (2.7 dB?) down low for movies, if the T/S parameters of that woofer show it to be a medium/low Qts and low Fs woofer.

I don't have the T/S parameters of the K-473 woofer, so I can't say.  It would be nice to have those values in the T/S database.  You can measure those in your 1802 assembly using a woofer tester from Parts Express, and simply look for another woofer from someplace like Parts Express of about the same T/S parameters (if you don't wish to buy from Klipsch at their higher resell prices).

I'm not sure how Roy set up the ports/tubes, but it looks like a simple vent to the other side of the horn throat (i.e., not an additional port close to the horn mouth as it is in tapped horns of Danley's subwoofers).  If this is true, then adding another woofer would be a great mod for home theater duty where deeper bass is desired and the cost of an additional woofer isn't such a design factor as it is for professional cinema installs.

EDIT:  note that below the port tune frequency, the output of a tuned port box cuts off rather dramatically, as you indicated going from vented to closed box, above.  If you replace the vents in the dual-ported throat with just another woofer, you get more output below the original port frequency, and more output overall due to the increase in effective driver area at the throat.

    YMMV.

Very interesting info. I’d be curious as to why exactly Roy ended on using the ports instead of 2 drivers. Maybe it added total output? I think it’d be cool if we could get closer to 15hz with the two sealed 18’s or the single driver with the port tuned lower.

OK I was asking Roy about this and he said the spec's are for cinema measured in 1/2 space and not for a room of a house, it is going to go lower than 20hz. You are using it in quarter space which will lower it right off the back, into the teens.

I would say, me saying this not him, test it and see what your getting as it is first. What Roy said was yes you can plug a vent do go deeper you will just lose some sensitivity, it's a trade off.

But I would guess with the output, losing a little sensitivity wouldn't be a big deal depending on how you like to play it. I know the 1502 which is 2.5-3 Db lower output than the 1802 is still alot inside a house (in our room). I love this thing, I have never heard bass this clean before.

I thought test it as is first to see what your getting and go from there, you may be happy as is, or you can experiment and plug a vent with soft foam and test again ? I would roll up some soft foam and slide it in a tube where it fits kind of tight, wouldn't want it to blow into the front space where you would have to remove the complete vent to get it out, that would be a pain. Were leaving in the morning so I may not be back here for over a week, if I don't answer back I'm not ignoring you. Going to talk with him more about this later.

Once you get everything done and dialed in it's going to be amazing and look cool with everything you did the room.

Thank you for looking into this. That is great news that the idea wasn’t condemned. I better hold off on trimming the front wall out while I experiment. I’m excited to see what we can do with this.

All the sudden my right xlr on the anthem avm60 is staticky at times. So it’ll be getting sent off and traded for a new one.

In other news I rescued these forte 2s for $200.

@AHall Great job on your planning and the results to house those three beasts.

That "light" stucco finish looks well done, the sheen helps with the lighting in those "Avatar" (pink & blue) pictures.

    WOW!   just   WOW!

Thanks it’s called skip trowel texture. The philips hue lights really give a lot of options for color. 16 million color choices at the touch of a button from your phone app. I haven’t put in the led light strips in the top edge of the soffit yet. Hopefully this week I’ll finish it as well.

Once everything is together you will have plenty time to play with them and see what they do in your room.

I heard someone say , if it's true or not who knows but you could plug one of the vents and tune it a little lower. If that is really the case it would be another thing to try, maby ?

I don't know who was saying that, it's been a while, or even if it were true ?

But I know there was a company, maby SVS who had a sub at one time that had a foam plug to close off one of their ports to lower the tune, I remember reading something about that a long time ago.

I did some reading on the skhorn and found out depending on the application you run all the ports open or close them to tune lower. That would be something ask Roy. I really don’t want to mess with his handy work unless he says it’s doable. Id be interested in trying it if I could trade a little output for a few more hz lower for LFE for movies.

I dont believe I could use the full 136db(might be closer to 140db with room gain?) in the house anyway. Especially if I build a tuba ht low profile for the back of the room if needed to smooth the response.

Maybe you could inquire to your ole designer buddy?

    It sure does, well  done.

Music will be amazing, but just a warning, when you first try a movie it might be shocking. If you have small kids the bass may scare them the first time it really pressurizes the room and vibrates everything. I loved the way music sounded but wasn't really ready for what the deep bass of a movie could do, people just get that, what just happened look. :blink2: You will see. :emotion-21:

Love the floor, is that, laminate, tile or wood ?

The floor is tile. I have a 10x10 area rug for it.

Very nice that front wall is how wide? You might want to test run the system before you treat the walls incase things rattle and you need to reinforce or add braces.......

Shouldn’t need much for bracing. I braced everything decently when I had the drywall off. Then used 1/2 sound board under the drywall. The room is 16ft wide.

  8. “hi rick.  its not that that i think that you took a wrong turn or anything like that.  i often see people switch out components and claim that it was a good thing without really understanding what they did.  klipsch and i take a lot of pride in making these systems sound the best that they can and that includes picking components and other things that should make the speakers sound the best that they can.  so when people replace these components, i often find myself asking "what led them to change these thing?".  obviously we take so much care when we do replace components to make sure that the resultant change guarantees the same freq response, polar response, phase response, etc to make sure that the change keeps or makes the speaker better.  there are quite a few people that claim "better" but don't offer or present any data as why its better.  on the 55g, i have heard that its distortion is lower.  but that is not the case.  i have played with that driver and it does not represent any lower significant distortion.  in fact, because of the exit throat of the driver, it is quite the opposite.  i am not picking on the 55g or any one component.  its just that changing anything results in something that is not the way klipsch spec meant it to be.  if they were to make sure that keeping it to klipsch spec was a priority then maybe.  just to be sure, klipsch doesn't recommend any of these changes or authorize them.  ultimately though, its your ears that decide what you like.  just like, its klipsch ears that decide what is klipsch or not.  take care”

  9. It seems like everyone that has bought them likes them. That can sometimes give a little bias. I’ve never heard of someone not liking them though, so that is good. Roy didn’t seem like it was a good idea with some turbulence with the different sizes.
