  1. Mark, Thank you for the string. Great info on veneering. I have used 3m Pro 90 spray adhesive before when building countertops, (laminate to MDF). Never had an issue with separation. It sounds very similar in that you spray both surfaces, allow to cure dry to the touch and then combine and add pressure. You do however need to get your alignment set. once you touch the two cured surfaces together your are done. You will be lucky to get them part should you need to adjust. I have lost a couple countertops due to rushing the process. My hope is to get feedback on any bracing or dampening, and will using the 3/4 MDF as a Veneer cause any problems. I should think it would insulate the cabinet and change the resonance. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if it will do so in a good way or bad way. I sure would like to get it right the first time. I'm sharing a couple other veneer projects I have as done should someone find any inspiration in the materials combined. Waterfall Bar top in honey locust with black walnut Drafting table in rift saw white oak edge band and Speele Pommele -rotary cut or Bubinga. Not sure, the sheets of venner were liquidated from a supplier and did not have a description.
  2. Hello, I thank you all in advance for the great info on this forum. I have been falling down the "rabbit hole" over the long holiday weekend (Thanksgiving in the US) The wife and I connected up a new to me set of Heresy II and for the first time in our new house had an evening just listening to music. It was made all the better by the fact the kids were elsewhere and there was plenty of holiday wine left. She is hooked now! My goal is educate myself on how to put systems together. Learning about: room dynamics, making use of absorption and deflection, equipment, repairs and modification to build a 2ch stereo set up in my living room. This set up will be used with vinyl LP's and cd's played in our main living room. The room has a lot of acoustic issues and challenges not to mention a very strong architectural design. More details on the room as the time and budget allow for changes. Here is a quick snapshot of my past experience. Just enough knowledge to get into trouble. As I have been listening to Lp's since the early 80's and was fortunate enough to be exposed to set of 1960 vintage speakers as a teenager I have always loved what a system can sound like. The speakers were Electro-voice model unknown 12 or15"? speaker with open back cabinet paired with Harmon Kardon 330i and a HK amp. I bought a simple crossover from radio shack with self enclosed Realistic brand tweater and created a very enjoyable set up. Having recently moved I am taking the time and interest to set my new system up. however I respect the fact that I don't know what I don't know yet. I get one level or aspect understood and several more questions a pop up. Thus the joy of the hobby. I am using this forum to gather my thoughts and questions in the hopes I do not make to many unnecessary mistakes or steps backwards over this learning process. I am breaking the project into phases to stay focused and would welcome your input and teachings along the way. Phase 1. Equipment, Obviously this is a never ending process but lets call this the baseline or starting point from which I can become educated and gain a better understanding of how all aspects relate to each other and thus the overall listening experience. -I am starting my baseline with a pair of Heresy II's a 70's Yamaha CR2010 amp, a turntable (Technics SL-D2 with Ortofon blue) and a cd player (Sony CDP970) all are fine for now and are all my budget has been able to compile over the years. Phase 2. Repair as needed, electronically, and cosmetically to get everything working to the fullest before making any modifications. -This is where I'm at currently. I want to start with the speakers. They are in original condition and need nothing other than cosmetic help and future modifications if desired. The cabinets are rough. They have been spray painted black, yes the cloth too. And not well I might add. Phase 3. Pause, listen and enjoy! Phase 4 Room acoustics. measure and try differnt absorption and deflection methods Phase 5 Pause listen and enjoy! Phase 6 Modifications and upgrades phase 7 Listen and enjoy, repeat steps as needed indefinitely. That being said I see three options for the speakers. Resurface the birch ply cabinets with a new veneer, build new cabinets in 3/4"MDF or veneer the existing birch with 3/4" MDF. As I have a surplus of MDF veneered in vertical grain African Sapele I'm hoping to use this material. It is consistent architecturally with the room decor and it is free. I'm questioning the trade off and benefits of building new cabinets in the 3/4" MDF or veneering the birch in the same 3/4" MDF thus saving the expense of new veneer. Will 3/4" MDF be sufficient for the cabinet. I'm not worried about future damage as these will not be moved much. So I'm fine with MDF over birch from a repair or durability aspect. Not ok with compromising sound quality. I question if 3/4" will be enough or should I laminate two pieces to create an 1 1/2" sheet? What about bracing? I can also simply use the 3/4" MDF as the veneer and apply it over the birch cabinets. If I do this will I be creating any unforeseen issues? how do I prevent the MDF & Ply from vibrating? Will glue and brad nails be sufficient to laminate the materials or did I just go two steps back? I am comfortable with any of the options as I have the tools and carpentry experience required. I just would like a few opinions on the best build. Will bracing help or do I change the sound negatively? As these will never be stock I'm open to all suggestions with regard to cabinet build. Crossovers and tweeter upgrades will be addresses when I get there in phase 6. I believe it's necessary to fix the room acoustics before I start any speaker mods. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have attached photos of the existing cabinets and what Sapele looks like. All the best, CR2010
