  1. Thanks for the comments. Im glad to hear that the k-33 isnt such a bad option since its all most of us diyers can get. BTW, one nice thing about the "front-loader"-the slot is made in the driver mounting baffle board and therefore easily removed. So if I do come by an EV etc, I can just make a new baffle board w/ a 6 X 13 slot. Because the baffle is the mounting for the driver, one can swap drivers pretty quickly for AB comparation. Wouldnt that be fun! taylor
  2. Thanks for the info. Another variable just entered the picture. I acquired a second set of plans that were the actual ones used by by friend to a pair of K-horns. This was in 1956. He remembers getting the "newer" dyi set many years later. The old set shows more parts, more bizarre angle cuts, and is 32.25 inch wide. The newer version, 1964ish, claims to be redesigned for ease of construction as has all the same exterior dimensions except the width- its only 26.75 inches wide. Depth and height are the same. The layout is claimed to be a scaled down Patrician layout. Although the older plans are probably standard K-horn dimensions, the newer set are FAR better designed for building. Fewer parts, photos and the step-by-step instructions make it a more likely successfull and less frustrating project. And both plans do show a 6inch wide slot. I guess Ill build the newer one w/ a k-33 and use a 3inch slot since I dont have the time to search for a good cond. EV or Stephens. Im scanning both manuals and if anyone is interested in a copy or maybe would like to post them somewhere, let me know. Thanks taylor
  3. Hi, Well Im finally really to start building a K-horn sub but before I start, I have a question. The plans that I borrowed from a friends father turned out to be EV Georgian KD2 diy plans. The booklet states that EV, who provides Klipsch w/ drivers, was licenced to sell the plans for their corner horn. The booklet is mint and has step by step instructions and photos of construction. Is this identical to the K-horn and should the K-33 work? The driver listed in the plans is a 15WK. Thanks for any advise on this. taylor
  4. Thanks for the comments. I checked out the Bottlehead site and the Paramour looks to be a nicely assembled amp. All the parts look to be high quality and the price is reasonable. Crossing over at below 50/60hz might be a problem since the LS only goes down to about that. The Khorn goes to 30 so the LF amp will only be supplying between those points. By the way, this is a music only system so mega bass for effects isnt really needed. taylor
  5. Hi group, Im considering building a SE amp which will put out about 2-5 watts (depending on the design)and was wondering what other tube SE users think of the sound. I will eventually use a small IC based amp for a Khorn sub but will cross at 60hz or so, so the flea power amp will still be supplying the LS with their full range. I dont try and make my ears bleed anymore so do the tubes really make the horns sing. Ive been using SS amps and inefficient speakers for the past 16 years so I dont have much experience with this setup. Thanks, Taylor
  6. HDBRbuilder, You have some very valid points. Ive always wanted a pair of Kkorns but it just seems impractical for my room. My wife has accepted the LSs and I told her an addition would be two corner "stands" for our sculptors. I really want the imaging of two speakers in the middle of the room and there is no way she would get behind two Khorns on the wall! Also, the flexibiliy of the separate units is appealing since we may move and who knows what room Ill get next. If too small, I can just use the LSs. The cabinet fabrication I would actually enjoy since this is what I do for fun anyway. And since the drivers all the same, I can still build a Khorn mid/tweet unit if I wind up w/ a proper room. Thanks again for pointing out options. Taylor
  7. Soundog, thanks for the info. Im willing to sacrifice a small amount of LF to keep this system ALL horn. As I stated above, I have full size schematics, or really templates that are accurate to 1/32" for all dimensions. I have a full woodshop w/ a 50" Powermatic tablesaw and a panel saw so this shouldnt be too difficult. It will be nice to use ply rather than MDF as with my last several projects (oh my back!) This may take awhile to complete since it is one of many projects (car, yard, house etc) on my plate, but Ill keep in touch with progress. Taylor
  8. I wouldnt mind having Khorns but my listening room is far wider than deep, so I really have to have speakers in the middle of the wall. The listening angle would be >90deg. If the gain of 2/3 only costs $100-200 for speakers plus a couple sheets of birch ply, it still should improve the sound at a reasonalbe cost dont you think? If I move, I could always use the bins and make "satalites" out of the LSs to create a Khorn. My biggest concern is still whether a Khorn produces acceptable LF for most listeners. Is it pretty weak at 35-40hz or does it do an adequate job. Taylor
  9. Well I love my new LSs but have missed LF extension on some music. Jazz is no problem but some rock just needs it. I was wondering what most Khorn owners think about the bass. Ive seen questions on other forums about using DR subs and assume this might be overkill for HT. Im not a bass freak except for quality. Would either one or two bins help out the LSs enough to justify the hassle? All horn just seems right. BTW, a friends father just happens to have soom old plans to build Khorns. They are from the 60s when EV sold/gave plans to driver purchasers. They have been rechecked by an engineering firm and printed via blueprint machine full size! He and his buddies built a bunch of them in the mid sixties. Im hoping the design hasnt changed so that a current K33 will still be alright. What do you guys think? One/Two bins in the corner/s with LSs in the middle. Taylor
  10. Thanks for the info. I found a two character stamp on the back: EM on one and RM on the other.I also noticed what appears to be pre-drilled holes on the opposite side of the XO. Was this plate common to another model which had a XO mounted there or was something removed that was stock? Taylor
  11. Hi all, Soundog said this is the place if its Klipsch and he was right. Nice to have a product specific forum. Well I just picked up a pair of LSs and have the regular newbies questions to ask. Firstly, I would like to know their age but I couldnt get the "decoder" page to load. They are the black models with the id LS BB (basic black?) 20T552/3 and AA xo. They are in excellent condition except for some minor scrapes and holes from eyelets(ceiling hanging) They have square magnet woofers (alnico?) and everything is clean and shiney. They sound wonderful. This is my first pair of horns and so far, after listening in my garage, with an old Hafler dh200 and a diskman, Im pretty impressed! Thanks for any advise/info/comments. Taylor
