My comment was not meant to be sarcastic. My sentiment is genuine.

The Klipsch  BAR 48 definitely has its issues but I’m not prepared to say that it’s a failure. That will depend to what extent Klipsch is prepared to get these issues resolved.

My appologies if I read your comments and took them a different way.   I received another email from Gentech today as I've let them know about all the problems and told them about all our comments on this forum how there are these issues....he said to me ' try doing to firmware update' .   Well that is ridiculous since I told him I did all updates when I first set up the Bar 48.  I don't even think they were reading my complaints....As DaleG said, Klipsch's employees and alternate warranty agencies have NO idea what is happening to these units.  I hope a company with a reputation as high as one that Klipsch has, will solve these issues so they can be trusted again in the soundbar department.   Wish I had a stand alone  home so I could buy their floor standing speakers and their component speakers......those ones kick ***!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, some retailers may have a lot of old stock so you may be better off trying to get a warranty replacement from Klipsch/Gentec.

If you got a refund for your Surround 3 speakers perhaps you should wait and see what becomes of these issues then consider whether you would like to purchase another set.

Hi KevinB,  See my response to DaleG's earlier post...I decided to return my Bar48 and get an LG system instead.

    I updated the original post.
Update 15 January 2020. Where to start? Klipsch has really dropped the ball with the BAR 48, in lack of features and poor quality control.
    1) Out of 3 BAR 48s I’ve had in two months, two fail to pair with Bluetooth, including the latest unit. This is a show-stopper for me. I haven’t decided whether to seek a 4th replacement or get a refund and go with a competitor which I know works well and sounds nearly as good.
    2) Out of 3 sets of Surround 3 speakers I’ve had, one pair produced static, none are loud enough while playing 5.1 surround videos (such as Star Wars Last Jedi), and none play stereo sources on the S3 speakers louder than a whisper, which I fully expected to enjoy (given that simple car audio and home theater receives plays stereo sources on all speakers using ‘Balance’ for left-right and ‘Fade’ for front-back balance). I may just return them for a refund, since 5.1 is an option for me, as I’m fine with 3.1.
    3) I’ve an online support request. The tech said he has forwarded a bug report to engineering. I replied I hope he forwards these concerns to marketing, engineering and manufacturing so they can decide on a competitive feature set and improving product quality.
    4) Kudos to Amazon for their extended return/exchange dates during the annual holiday period starting at Thanksgiving (extending normal 30-day returns to January 31).

Hi DaleG,  the past few days my Bar 48's subwoofer was dis-connecting from the bar and the Bluetooth was crackly and not playing properly.   After returning the Surround 3 speakers for a refund....I decided to box up the Bar 48 and take it back.   I got an LG SL6Y soundbar instead of getting a Klipsch replacement.   So far so good!  I'd say the LG soundbar has better sound compared to the Klipsch but the subwoofer that comes with it, is a bit weenie....It's a 6" sub but much smaller enclosure compared to the Klipsch.  I can still control the volume for the sub, and the LG bar seems to have more audio settings, and even an equalizer to fine tune the highs and lows.   Also LG has surround speakers available similar to the Klipsch ones however I can't seem to find them anywhere just yet....everyone is sold out!  I was really hoping the Klipsch would work out but seems you and lots of other Klipsch owners are having the same issues.

When I bought my BAR 48 and encountered all these issues I contacted Gentek. They told me they didn't have specific procedures for dealing with firmware defects and suggested I raise my issues in these forums. :-(

I'm still waiting to hear back from Klipsch. I gave them a lot to look into...

I returned the Surround 3 speakers and didn't want a new replacement as I don't think a new pair would of solved the problem.   Now the Bluetooth connection is not working properly....almost like it is skipping or slowing down my music either from downloaded tunes from my phone, or when I use Radioplayer app on Q107...this just started today and I'm starting to get very annoyed.   The Bricks' return policy is 7 days!  Can you believe that....Now I am going to have to get back in touch with Gentech and request a replacement for my unit.  This is crazy. Anyone else have Bluetooth issues?

I got a call this morning from a gentleman at Klipsch Product Support in the US. I responded with a lengthy email pointing out the issues we have raised here and provided links to specific threads. In my email I identified the issue with the sound level from the Surround 3 speakers as the number one issue impacting BAR 48 owners. He is presently reviewing these issues with his management and will get back to me shortly.

I will keep Community members informed about what I learn.

Thank you KevinB that is great that someone phoned you!   I've been in touch with Gentec in Markham Ontario who does the warranty for Klipsch here and he suggested I return my Surround 3 to Bestbuy for a new pair as they may be 'defective'.   I'll give that a shot over the weekend and let you all know how the sound is.

Check the audio output format on the TV. If you see the Dolby Digital light on the soundbar when watching Netflix then the TV is set correctly to output Dolby Digital. Does the TV output still show Dolby Digital when watching a Blu-ray movie? I doubt it, otherwise the Dolby Digital light on the soundbar would be illuminated so either the Blu-ray player is not sending Dolby Digital to the TV or HDCP is preventing the TV from sending it to your soundbar.

If that is the case, you may still be able to listen to your Blu-ray movies in surround sound if you can connect the Blu-ray player directly to the BAR 48 using a digital optical cable (assuming your Blu-ray player has a digital optical output.)

You won't get any sound from the Surround 3 speakers unless the ((SUR)) light on the soundbar is illuminated.

Thank's for the tip, I'll have a look at the back of it to see if it has an optical output.

RE: Is Surround turned on? Check the BAR to see that the "((SUR))" light is on, with or without "DB" on. It can be turned on with the remote, press the "((SUR))" and confirm the BAR shows the "((SUR))" light is on. Then I confirm the rear speakers are getting signal by putting my ear up to them (which of course, is too quiet, and is the problem Klipsch needs to fix).

Hi Dale,  yes the surround light is on but the Dolby isn't while I have the movie playing...and the sound is minimal from the 2 Surround speakers.    I'm starting to think it may be my blu ray player.....I'll look to see if it has the optical out as suggested by Kevin.

I just started playing another bluray disc with digital dolby and the dolby light is not on the soundbar...similar to when I had the Dark Knight in...I wonder why that is ?  Netflix through my tv however has the digital dolby light on.....weird.

How is the Blu-ray disk connected? I assume it is connected to the TV?

Is there a setting on the Blu-ray player that lets you specify the digital audio output format? If so, make sure it is set to Dolby Digital (or DTS) and not PCM.

If you can confirm that the Blu-ray player audio output format is Dolby Digital (or DTS) and the TV is not passing that through to you soundbar, then the issue could be related to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP).

Blu Ray is connected to my tv via hdmi cable and I wonder if it's because its an old player?  Like 10 years old.   I dunno, I hate all this new technology crap, it never seems to work properly.  I replaced my Sony BDV-IZ1000W surround system with the new Klipsch but I am still using the Sony blu ray player.   The only reason I upgraded was the Sony wasn't playing audio through it's speakers when I got the new LG tv.  When it worked, it was great though.

@CanadianAndy If the Dolby Digital (or DTS) light is not on, you are not getting surround sound from the source. If it is on, you might be getting 5.1 surround sound from the source but you could just be getting stereo or even mono sound.

If the Dolby Digital (or DTS) light is not on and the BAR 48 has to simulate surround sound, the sound level from the surround speakers will be barely audible.

I just started playing another bluray disc with digital dolby and the dolby light is not on the soundbar...similar to when I had the Dark Knight in...I wonder why that is ?  Netflix through my tv however has the digital dolby light on.....weird.

If you were getting any sound from the Surround 3 speakers the BAR 48 must have had the ((SUR)) light on. 🙂

Did you verify that the Dolby Digital light was also on? It would need to be if your source was sending 5.1 surround sound to your soundbar.

To get surround sound from your TV you have to ensure the TV sound output format is set to Dolby Digital and not PCM.

I didn't check to see if the Dolby Digital light was on during the movie however when I have Netflix running, that light is on and the sound is more noticeable...I haven't taken them back yet and it seems as though they are getting better day by day some how.

  11. I watched "The Dark Knight" yesterday with my Surround 3 speakers and it sounded like the centre speaker audio was coming through them, not surround.   Still not very loud at all and the way I have them set up, is for my listening pleasure...anyone else in the room would not be able to enjoy it due to the direction the speakers need to be for me to hear it.   I think I will return them to Best Buy and get my money back.  Very Disappointing from a brand like Klipsch. 🔇

Update Sun Dec 22, 2019, 1640PM PST. In short, I'm waiting to received a replacement BAR 48, then will test the Surround 3 volume output. I chatted with Amazon tech support, explained everything I have done (firmware update, exchange of Surround 3 speakers). After we tried an HDTV audio out adjustment, they will exchange the BAR 48 for a new one. I should receive the new replacement BAR 48 in a few days. Note: Klipsch tech support has not responded to my online service request in 12 days.

Update Dec 21, 2019, 1800PM PST. Bad news for the replacement S3 speakers I received today. I received the replacement Surround 3 speakers, plugged them in and connected them. The low-volume sound problem still exists with this new set of speakers. I have the BAR 48 Surround volume turned up all the way for both channels. I have to put my ear up to the speakers to hear them, which makes them useless. I am confident I properly installed the BAR 48 firmware v23 (dated 12/13/2019) several days ago (all the lights lit up in sequence as the PDF said they would). Update 1830PM. I updated the BAR 48 to firmware v23 again. No change in the low-volume problem. Sigh.

Update 12/16/2019: Klipsch just posted a firmware update for the BAR 48, firmware v23, which includes this fix: "Increased Surround Output when Rear Surrounds are present." Ironically, two days ago I returned the Surround 3 speakers and am waiting for a replacement set to be shipped to me for this exact problem. I went ahead and installed the firmware update and will be ready when the Surround 3 speakers arrive. Fellow owners, if you want to try this on your BAR 48 to see if it improves sound volume for the Surround 3 speakers, please post here and let us know your findings.

Original Post 12/09/2019: I have a BAR 48 sound bar, which I love. I just added the Surround 3 speaker pair and adjusted the surround volume to maximum, but I can still barely hear the sound. The surround speakers are on my desk. By comparison the BAR 48 across the room drowns out the surround speakers.
My BAR 48 firmware was up-to-date out of the box (I just checked in klipsch.com, which said it has the current firmware, v14, released 7/17/2019, region Global).
I've adjusted the Surround 3 speaker volume to maximum (using the Surround button on the remote as per the Klipsch PDF).
Is there another way to turn up the surround speakers louder? Am I missing something else? Or should I request support from Klipsch?

Did you get the new Bar 48 yet from Amazon?

I too had the same issue. The new firmware helped a lot as well as setting the surround speaker volume to maximum. Even now if the source is not Dolby Digital the volume from the surround speakers is barely audible.

Now, when watching a Dolby Digital movie having surround content the sound level from the surrounds is more than adequate.

I've googled what the best surround movie to watch is, and seems it is The Dark Knight from the Batman collection...which I have.   So I will give that a shot in a few hours and let you know if the Surround is any better.  As of right now with the TV on, still very faint volume....You know on the Klipsch website it says these Surround speakers are 60W however if you look closely where the cord is plugged in, it says 35W.    Since I am in a condo, I can only use the system with loud bass during the day out of respect for my neighbours.  Fingers crossed.

  14. I unfortunately have the same issue...just bought the Bar48 w the Surround 3 speakers, have done the update, and have the 2 surround speaker volume at it's maximum and the only way I can hear them, is to have the speakers less than 24" from my ear, and at ear level.    Very disappointing..I'm ready to return them :(  The soundbar and sub however, are amazing.
