Yes, I considered upgrading the
crossover. I believe that Al's crossover for the Belle would work in the
Heresy, but I finally decided that the cost was too much. I
am quite happy with the results so far. Yes, after
having a sub, I couldn't imagine going without it. That alone brings a
whole new life to the Heresy. I think I have don what I can for the
Heresy and I have gotten hooked on DIY, so I may try to put together a pair of
Jubilee's over the winter. My experiment with a scaled down Khorn made me
appreciate the possibilities of a horn bass bin.

From what I am hearing from the Solen caps is grainy, then
the people from the Q A&V forum would have been running out of my house
holding their ears in disgust before the upgrade. lol And perhaps
after too. lol

The Heresy is not everyones "cup of tea" as is evident
from the wood chipper joke. lol But that's ok, not everyone or every
speaker is perfect. The dual DPL12 Infinite baffle sub makes up for
a lot of the missing bass that the Heresy lacks.

I have read in a number of posts,
that upgrading a crossover can be a simple as replacing old capacitors.
I was going to post this earlier, but have since decided to put my 2 cents in
there as well. "Swap out those old capacitors. I must say
however, I had noticed a decline in performance in the past few
months. ie clarity, dynamics and imagery. I believe I had a
cap or two that were on their way out to pasture, maybe more so in on speaker
than the other. I replaced them with Solen Film & foil and fast
caps. I have to say; from where the Heresy's were a few weeks ago to
the music that they are reproducing now is incredible. Better than when they
were new, well, thats actually kind of hard to say. After all, that was
almost twenty years ago lol Imagine,
taking a twenty year old pair of speakers and do a relatively simple upgrade
and they are like new again, maybe even better. Thanks for the insight guys.

Been kinda busy this summer and haven't had a chance to finish them.
I'll get around to it next month when things slow down a little.
I've
tried to keep the Heritage look and not go to far over the top.The
woofers I used are the Pioneer A30Gu40-51D from Parts Express. The mid
is a Selenium D405Ti 2" Titanium w/ a p-audio knock-off horn from
Goldwood. The tweeter is a Jbl 2404. The crossover is ALK's ES700
design. ES7500 to be added soon.
I love the way they sound.
The bottom end (40 to 100hz) is alittle weak at low volume, but when
played around 90db or higher they really shine. I tried several
different mids and the 405 got my vote. None of them really had the
sparkle I wanted so I decided to add a tweeter and that did the trick.
I have been working on the upper grills but don't quite have the right design worked out yet.
This has really been a fun project....so far.

Big D, you mentioned trying several different mids,
which ones. I read an earlier post that you were thinking about the
Radian 905, did you try it and how did it sound. It looks like a
little too much $$ for me. I was looking at the Selenium
D3305ti or the D3300ti with the HM-4750-SLF lens. Did you happen to
try one of these or does anyone have an opinion on them? Oh, what about
the 408ti? So many questions. lol I have been away from the forum
for a few months and ran into this thread on my return. I have been like
a kid in a candy store for the last couple of days catching up on the last six
months worth of post.

Hi guys, what a busy time of year. The stores are crazy. The project is going fine, and yes I do notice the whole. Well, I don't know that it is a whole of the fact the higher freq are coming from the base bin. I had the same problem with the Bush horns, simple enough to get rid of the higher freq than to enhance them, not that I want to. I find the vocals coming from the base to cloud or smear the ones coming from the mid horn. I don't think that higher freq take very well to the corners, end up being almost an echo. I will say this though, what the khorn base bin does for the k-22 is amazing, well amazing may be too strong. But the bas is very quick, clear and much lower than in the original sealed Heresy. I was getting about the response @ 37hz in the bin as I was at 50 in the heresy. Should I have built a full scale k-horn, not necessarily. I started this project as entertainment and a learning experience.
What did you "save" in sweat equity making your creation?
Who said I was trying to save, this is a project I could do with little cost expenditures. I now have 30 hours in construction and at least 15 in listening and evaluating. 45 hour fun for only $120. To build a full scale pair I need another $900 to $1,000 for drivers and $300 - $500 for crossovers and then the finishing starts. I think I agree with HBLDR, when I start shelling out that kind of money, I will have to look hard at buying a used pair. This may be difficult, but should not be impossible. I saw a pair pop up in the Boston area, round trip thats only 20-24 hours. I could rent a van and be back in a weekend. now I just need to save the money. LOL before that time comes, I probably have built a couple of more subs. Looking at an infinite baffle, a dipole or a dipole transmission line. The only drawback to being hocked on DIY is, I am starting to run out of living space.
This (the scaled base bin) is really a bad setup, it just needs some work on the crossover and maybe a different mid horn. I think that it could make a really nice speaker, but your right. Do I want to spend the time and money to recreate the Klipshorn. No, I think I watch ebay.

Yeah, I though that was a bit pricey too, especially when the prices on 401, 77 & 33 came in at what I was expecting. I wrote back to check the price on the 55-X again, kind of expecting it was a type-o, but no such luck. Did the 55-M cost that must new? I had been in touch with Bob Crites thru ebay and will probably go that way if I proceed, but it is really nice to here someone else mention his name. I have always been nervous of buy thru there, especially with the scams that are being pulled lately.

Time so far is about 16 hour, not including the time compiling the information and producing a 3d cadd design. But that does include time to build three templates, keep two kids from fighting every time I left the room LOL (I think they were testing me, how many time can we get dad to run back up stairs) oh and last night I couldnt wait until I had the head finished, had to hook up the base bin as soon as the glue set. I think the second one will go much faster. Depending on the performance, I will put some cherry veneer on or cut them up for fire wood. Time will tell. Really, they sounded good last night. The base was defiantly improved and cant wait to get a second one running too.
Supplies, two sheets of ½ and one sheet of ¾ MDF will two (a pair) ~$120 CA.

Wow $140 for a new. I have been pricing parts and the one that scared me was the K-55-X (replacement to the K-55-M) $515.85 CA each. I think Ill save my money and play with this setup until I find a pair of used Klipshorn for sale near by. I am starting to get hope for a pair near by, saw a pair in the Boston area. That would only be a 10 to 12 hour drive, but I didnt like the look of those ones. Too much money and a cabinet maker had done a restoration job. If they belong to someone here, I dont mean to insult anyone, I just didnt care for the veneer. In the photo, the rear opening looked as if it had been sealed. That couldnt be though, how would the base bin operate.

Yes it has the 12" k-22 driver.
Well, my first thought was to build a K-horn (true scale) and buy the pieces over time and buy the pieces (drives and cross over) as I had extra cash. That was going to take too long, Im bored now. So I got the bright idea to scale this down to improve the fitment in my house and give me a chance to see if I could actually piece together the horn. There are a number of difficult cuts for my limited exposure to woodworking, but everything went very well. Other than that, I have drivers and crossovers that I can throw in, for now, sitting in the Heresy.
As for the sound, I only have one built so far. I did some testing last night between it and the other Heresy and ran 1-12th octave tone as well. They both started dropping off soon after 75hz, but the S Khorn leveled off and ran down into the 40s and 37 where the Heresy kept on dropping. I dont have a dbl meter, so I couldnt give you any definite numbers in this area though. At this point, I found this interesting enough to build a second so I can hear them in stereo, this would give me a much better idea of how the sound in the mid to low range. I am worried about the crossover area ~600hz. This may be a bit high for the base bin. I am now wondering if the k-55 and k-501 would fit in this cabinet, I think the k-401 would be too long. All in all, its been a fun project with more to come Im sure.

I started my experiment with the scaled k-horn and thought I would post a few photos. Everything has gone very well as far as dimensions and angles, the problem lies in cutting and cutting the same thing twice. After cutting a couple of the interior wings I decided that I would have to build templates in order to have some kind of symmetry between them.

I am experimenting with a scaled version of a Khorn ( ~81.25%) using the drivers from a Heresy. what kind of problems will I get into regarding a cross over. If the orig 3x13 cut freq. ~ 400 hz how would I reach the 700hz the Heresy was crossed at. or should I look at trying to cross at the 400 range.
As I mentioned, this is an experiment mostly because; first, I have the drivers at hand.
second, the size is more suitable for my room and finally, I get the chance to see if I am capable of building a khorn cabenet.

Sorry, I can't comment on the Auricap. But, if you
have had good luck in the khorn and they are cheaper, then why not them in the
Heresy too.
Oh, by the way. If youre in QC, why not order straight from
solen.ca. The 15.91 was a Canadian price. The price you quoted for
the se200 of $14 would end up being 16.47 @ 0.85 on the $
