colterphoto1
That's a very cool option Amy. When I was in Tech Support I frequently fielded this question as folks don't like to have a 7.1 channel receiver with two channels of amp idle. If you want a bit more of an upgrade from simply adding more Quintet III satellites, here's Colter's Tech Tip- If you listen to a lot of stereo music, you'll do well to put B2 bookshelf speakers up front, they're more full range and smoother, even when used with sub for 2.1 surround.[] If you're a movie nut, a really super upgrade is to get S2 speakers for the side surrounds which gives you not only 7.1 but a wide, diffuse side surround experience much like you get in a real cinema from the long row of speakers down the side wall. [] And remember- the more speakers you install in a surround system, the more attention should be paid on placement of those speakers. The engineer recording the tracks to multi-track is placing the sounds in the sound field and is depending on the speakers being in particular locations for best playback of that soundtrack mix. Put the speaker in the wrong places and you're confusing things more, not adding to the surround expeience. [8-|] Google 'THX speaker placement' for lots more great info on where to put your surround speakers. And the first Klipsch FAQ is one I wrote that talks extensively about setting up your Quintet/Sub/receiver package. Check it out mang! colterphoto1
Heres the entire text of the FAQ on Quintet setup: Basic setup for Quintet III and SUB 10 or SUB 12 subwoofer Speaker Positioning - Home Theater systems are intended toimitate the sound of being in a cinema. The degree of realism you get from your surround sound system is directly related to properly locating your speakers. Put the front three speakers(Left satellite, special Center speaker, Right satellite) across the front ofthe room with the center either above or below your screen. If you wish tomount the center on the wall, use the Omnimount 10.0 swivel mount. The Left andRight speakers should ideally be placed an equal distance on either side of theTV screen. Suggested spacing is about ½ the width of the TV. (if you have a 42inch display, it’s probably about 36” wide, so put Left and Right about 18”from the display). Surround speakers - forsimple 5.1 systems are usually placed on the back or side walls of the room, about 5-6 feet off the floor. If you are seated along the back wall, try sidewall placement about 2 feet out from the corners. If you are seated in the openarea of the room, on the side walls about two feet behind you is good, or youcan place them on the rear wall if that is more convenient. Wire - you’ll need some wire to connect the five Quintet IIIsatellite speakers with your receiver. This can be simple lamp or ‘zip’ cordfound at any home center store. Choose an all-copper variety that is 16 gaugewire for speaker wires less than 60’. You only need larger gauge wires if yourspeaker wires are longer. Specialty ‘high quality’ wire is not required. Sub hookup - for most home theater systems you will be usinga standard RCA connector hookup. This is a shielded wire that is similar inconstruction to the wires leading from a DVD player to receiver. Again, a super‘high quality’ wire is not required. This will connect to the single SUB or LFEjack on the back of your receiver and to either of the two inputs on the backof the sub. If you wish, you can obtain a ‘Y’ connector and hookup to both ofthe sub inputs for a slight increase in volume. Settings - inRECEIVER’s menu system are detailed in the owner’s manual. Here are somesuggestions for getting the best sound and reliability from your QuintetIII/Subsystem: Say YES to ‘do you have a subwoofer’ Within the Speaker Setup controls, set all speakers to SMALLsetting. Adjust the crossover (or Low Passfilter) to 110 or 120 Hz. (default is usually 80) Set the LFE out to SUB ONLY (options might include Mains orSub+Mains) Settings - on the SUBrear panel are as follows: Set the Gain/volume to 8 to begin with, you’ll fine tune thebalance with remote control. Set the Low Pass/Crossover dial fully clockwise. Thiseliminates the subs’ filter system. Set the Phase switch to ‘0’, you won’t be using this withQuintet system. Set the ON/OFF switch near the power cable to ON- this is the MasterPower switch. Set the Auto/ON switch to AUTO. The sub will sense whenmusic or soundtrack is present and automatically turn the power on. It willwait a few minutes after the end of the movie to auto shut off. If you have an ‘optimizer’ microphone and setup system withyour receiver, make sure to check the receiver’s setup settings after runningthe autosetup. It is important that your speakers remain set to the SMALLsetting. Quintet III satellites speakers cannot reproduce bass tones andallowing the receiver to send bass to them at movie levels might damage them.
