  1. Good evening friends. I bought this powered subwoofer in '98 and it has performed nicely. Recently it has fallen silent. The red power light lights up instantly when power is applied and goes off instantly if switched off. If first switched to 'auto' and then unplugged, the light fades out within 2 or 3 seconds. When 'on' and disconnected from my receiver, I get no speaker feedback with a touch to the end of either left or right channel speaker rca cable. If I unplug the speaker, switch to 'on', then plug it into an AC outlet I get a thump from the speaker. (I did that only once!) Any ideas if this could be a cap issue or something more serious? If you believe this is a cap issue, can you point me toward a new one(s), please? I do not have an electronics bench but I've replaced several sets in my K speakers and they survived. I'm not one for dropping $100 at the repair shop without first investigating the issue. Thanks for your advice and have a pleasant evening. h
  2. Hey DD, I saw your postings in Bottlehead. You seem quite knowledgeable. The original photo and the one's I uploaded with this reply (HWB on the right and HWO on the left) show the HWB's as they are today. I bought the HWB's new in '78 sold as blemished for $300 (first quality was $400). They carried the same 5-year warranty as first quality. I'm handy and curious so I soon removed the black paint and uncovered a rich dark wood with a magnificent patina. Neither the grain nor color appear to be walnut as the label suggests (see attached photo). Can you help me identify the wood and what the label code truly indicates? BTW last year I updated the HWB's with Sonicaps from Bob Crites. He is very patient with tinkers like me! Maybe he'll sell me an E-2 cap kit for the HWO's! Thanks for your help, h
  3. Greetings, Decades ago I stripped my HWB pair which I bought new as 'blemished'. I'm very pleased with the finish, wood tone and patina but can't determine the wood. My HWO's are much lighter and appear to have a slightly different grain. Are the HWB's indeed walnut with that much black lacquer permanently 'stained' into the veneer? Thanks, h.
  4. I have 2 pair; 1978 Walnut and 1979 Birch. I'm told new capacitors and something about a motor board might be in order. I have the Type-E wiring schematic but little knowledge of how to use it. Does anyone have a kit? Screw on backs are a dangerous thing in the hands of a tinker!
