I am really interested in this observation. We hear so much about the fabled legendary RB-75.
I was trying to find a nice pair of bookshelf speakers for two channel computer/office duty. I went through Paradigm Studio 20's, RB-75's, RB-5's and RB-5 ll's. The RB-5 ll's won the role after a lot of shoot outs. The RB-75's tweeter runs pretty hot IMO for two channel with no sub. The RB-5's were just better balanced and something about them is very smooth sounding.

On a quest to simplify and down-size my system without giving up quality, I have been searching for an efficient bookshelf/monitor speaker to use with my Quicksilver integrated. RB75 and RB5 were on the list. I have RP160M and although I like them and have been using them in a second system, they don’t have as full a sound as I am looking for. Luckily, I bought a pair of RB5 locally that are in excellent condition. After several days of listening and dialing them in, I didn’t think they would replace my main system speakers and was ready to make them my second system speaker, replacing the RP160M. The one variable I didn’t adjust, (but knew it would be a factor) when dialing them in was speaker stand height. Initially I placed them on the only stands I had, a pair of 20” stands. I was able to find a nice pair of 26” stands to replace the 20” stands and getting the tweeter to ear height made a tremendous difference. Tonal balance improved immensely, and the sound became more cohesive and natural. I will have to do more critical listening to determine if these are my next main system speaker, but I have to say the RB5 are very, very good. In MY room and set-up I prefer them over the Forte III and Chorus II I previously owned. In my opinion the RB5 image better, are better balanced overall and more natural sounding. I’m down to two other speakers I would like to audition to find my possible end game speaker, RB75’s or Reference 3A de capo.
I had RB-5's, RB-5 ll's and RB-75's at the same time. For me, I preferred the RB-5's and RB-5 ll's. YMMV of course but the RB-5 was smoother and better balanced IMO. I'd like to find another pair actually.

600M's aren't an upgrade, if that's what you're thinking. The only bookshelf I'd take over the RB-5's is the RB-75. $99 was a steal for what you've got. Put a good amp with them and you've got a floorstanding speaker in the form factor of a bookshelf.
I actually preferred the RB-5's and RB-5 ll's over the RB-75's in near field listening. At one point I had RB-81 ll's, RB-5 ll's and RB-75's at the same time. I preferred the RB-5 ll's in my office for my computer system. Very nice speakers. You scored big time at $99!

Sounds like some serious heat exhaustion. Be careful outside. You have been thru your fair share of speakers and the high praise of the new system carries a lot of weight. It is great to here you are enjoying them. I love that new Godzilla and Looper.
I agree, his high praise goes a long way. I haven't seen the new Godzilla yet but Looper is awesome. It has so much bass it can almost be overwhelming at times.

So how do they sound? Are they everything you thought they'd be? They look amazing.

today got the veneer done on one speakers and got it stained as well.
got it coated with minwax pre-stain
and then the single 10 minute coat of dark walnut minwax
poly tomorrow if i get the other cabinet this far. just got one side done on it done tonight but going to bed.
Looks great! Your x-over work a few posts up looks excellent as well. Had you done much soldering before this? That is one part of this that has me a little nervous for my own build. I think you can order them already built for a small charge but at the same time it's nice to do things yourself and be proud of your work.

That's awesome. Great job on these builds. I have been checking out the Fusion-15 for awhile now myself. I don't know if I can finish mine as nice as you did but I'm going to try.

I can't believe the prices on used gear in your area, it's just mind blowing.

Yeah I have been looking at DIY projects myself. I see people gushing over the Joseph Audio Perspectives and how they are the best audio they have ever heard and they run 13k a pair. They run all SEAS drivers from the Excel line. You can build your own box with those drivers for a fraction of the cost from madisound. The tweeters are $291 and the woofers are $262.00. I want to build a speaker using ScanSpeak drivers myself.

I haven't stopped by this thread for awhile, wow. This is going to look amazing!

Emotiva gear has positives and negatives.
Positives: It is good looking gear that is affordable and it is well designed for the most part. I used to be a huge supporter of them and owned almost everything they produced at one point. Great bang for the buck or so I thought. They do have the best customer service in the industry though so your problem will be resolved.
Negatives: They are cheaply built in China. Some things about them are built like tanks but the small parts are cheap and you will have failures. Almost everything I own from them has had a failure or two. My ERC CD player would stop playing after a few hours of use, had to be sent in. My XPA-2 lost a channel more than once and I had to ship it back for repairs. My XPA-5 lost several channels as well that had to be sent in. One of my UMC's had to be sent in. My USP had to be sent in. After sending in 80+ lb amps 4-5 times as well as CD players, pre-amps and processors it starts to leave a bad taste in your mouth. Yes the gear looks cool and sounds fine when working but the failures are a testament to being cheaply built. I have Harman Kardon AVR's running strong from the 80's that have never had a failure. That's over 30 years of use and still going strong. I run an HK AVR 325 I've ran non stop since 2002 or so and have never had a problem with it either.
That being said it's still nice looking and sounding gear and the cheapest entry into separates backed by very strong customer service.

Paladiums, Beautiful, most certainly, best sounding, not by a long shot! Not just my opinion, but backed by the majority here that have A/B auditioned them. The Placebo affect exists and is well documented fact, but you are correct in that everyone's hearing and perception is different as proven by many who think Bose sound great! It is NOT hate or envy that forms my opinion as I truly wanted to like the Paladiums, but when I finally did, it was my personal preference that I felt the RF-7IIs sounded slightly better,
This is the complete opposite of my experience. I have owned RF-7's since 2002 and have spent quite a bit of time with the RF-7 II. I have not heard the Palladium P-37F but I have listened to the P-38F a lot and it is in a different league IMHO. Like everything in this hobby though, YMMV.
-
As far as the bookshelf speakers go, I found that I liked the RB-5 II better than the RB-75 and the RB-81 II. IMHO the RB-5 and RB-5 II is an amazing bookshelf speaker that can be had on the used market for a very good price making it the best bang for the buck bargain out there.

Thanks to Forum member "Quiet_Hollow" for shooting the video.
The speakers were absolutely brand new when this was shot so not broken in at all. And the room's acoustical tuning was setup for the Khorns that were previously in there. Too much absorption for SH50.
Those who have been following my thread in the Architectural section know things have changed. But when I'm done it will look similar as far as the room "look" goes.
Amazing, those SH50's are just out of this world.

hey vital is your YouTube vitalYFZ?
Nice, I've never heard White Snake's acoustic version of that song before, it's really good. I'll have to add that to my collection. The RF-7 II's sound great btw.Hey everybody! New member here! Thought I'd share a clip of my RF-7 II's playing a couple tracks.
Yes it is, how'd you know that? I don't think I have any vids up right now, need to do that.

Watched "9" last night. I thought it was very underrated for home theater use. Gorgeous picture even though everything was dark earth tones and I usually hate movies that do this. Without stating spoilers, some of the spooky and bright video effects were real nice with the bulbs set on bright, just had a nice shocking effect. LFE was strong but nothing too obnoxious. 16:9 aspect ratio but I guess I'll forgive them.
Yeah solid movie IMO, a must have for HT demos. Tim Burton is great at what he does.

somw cinema stuff uses b&c. My kpt-904 used de-75. And new ones use de-750 which is newer version of mine.
Interesting idea and that would sound amazing without a doubt. Would Klipsch be willing to use B&C drivers? For some reason I thought they only used their own. I'm seriously considering DIY speakers using a BMS compression driver with either the SEOS24 or the K402 and either 2 or 4 15's.so after living with just about every center klipsch makes, its amazing what one can get used to with the size of these things. the palladium seemed so big at first but now looks right at home on my entertainment center. without going crazy huge like multiple 10" wooers and keeping things somewhat "normal" sized i think the next flagship speaker ought to be a combination of 4 8" woofers (of course copper is perfectly fine ) and the 510 horn with the 2" b&c de750 from the cinema line up. this combination would probably make for the best center that would ever come out of klipsch factory. would it be for everyone? no. is the 64ii even for everyone? no. but if a center like that was offered at say 1800-2000$ i think it would sell like crazy to us "not so normal" folks
BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.
Oh I had no idea the pro stuff used B&C drivers, good to know. So how does your new Palladium stack up against your KPTs?

Just watched Jersey Boys again yesterday. Don't believe Clint Eastwood has made a bad movie yet and this one is excellent. I usually don't watch movies more than once, but make an exception for really good concert videos and musicals like this one. Highly recommended.
Yeah we watched Jersey Boys awhile back, great movie!

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1. I thought it was good, a lot slower than the first two but it was a solid movie. Surround sound was good.

It depends on the room you have them in. I owned the RB-5 ll, RB-81 ll and RB-75 all at the same time. I did a lot of comparing in my office which is about 11 x 13 or so using a 4 way speaker selector. In my office the RB-5 ll was hands down better than the others. It was much smoother sounding and more laid back. In my theater room which is long and narrow, like 23 x 14 the RB-75 was able to run with my dual Epik Empires without missing a beat. They sounded a lot like my RF-7's when blended into the HT mix. So if it's any type of near field listening the RB-5's do a lot better IMO. In a theater size room, the RB-75's will sound better than a lot of tower speakers out there if you're running subs.

Which Mohu? User satisfaction is 4.5 stars with the Mohu 50 amplifed. A couple of folks said they were unhappy until they ensured the cable was at the bottom. Not sure why that would matter, but several report that it does.
Dave
I'm using the Mohu Leaf 50 which is amplified. I think it's great but it's the only antenna I have used so nothing to compare it to.

Same here, we cut the cable so to say a year ago and the pic quality of our OTA antenna is just amazing. We are saving probably $2000 a year by getting rid of our Directv. The bill with all channels and then a few UFC fights here and there was just getting beyond ridiculous. Now we watch Netflix and Hulu Plus and OTA channels for a fraction of the cost and better PQ.

Well, YMMV of course but I went through a lot of different things and to me and my ears, buying an Amazon Fire TV "the cube not the Firestick" and using Amazon Music gives me the best sound as far as streaming music. I also had Pandora, Spotify and TIDAL. I have Apple TV as well. In my setup I hardwired the Fire Cube TV straight to the fiber optic cable coming out of the wall. Ultra HD music on Amazon Music is up to 24/192 so it is very solid. I'm happy with the setup and very nice selection of music in a lot of formats from 16/44 to 24/192 and Dolby Atmos. Just depends on the track.
