  1. My cat did the same thing to one of my decorator cornwalls about a week after I got them. I was able to glue the small tears using a needle to close the holes. You can see where the dust covers were repaired if you look closely, but otherwise the repair is fine. I made similar covers for the cw woofers to the ones that were described in another post. declawing cats requires cutting off the end of their digits at the first joint, which struck us as cruel. The organization we got our cat from had us sign a contract stating that we would not remove his claws. I imagine it would be difficult to punish us if we violated it, but my wife and I agree with the intent. He's an indoor/outdoor cat and going outside is a definite improvement in his life (at least that's what he says.) As well, he has a problem with crystals in his urine that can prove life threatening but is far less common in cats that go outside. He's actually been healthier since we started letting him out.
  2. Thanks for the suggestions - it seems like it will be an easier task to grill these nicely - the cat grilled up pretty good too ; ). I have to admit not being sure what the motorboard/motherboard is. It does seem that I could pull out the speaker and reset it with grillcloth and a gasket sandwiched between the cabinet and the speaker frame. I believe the speakers are '75 vintage, but the seller wasn't certain. he had aquired them in a lot with khorns and la scalas and, after getting involved with refinishing and tweaking the other speakers, decided he didn't have the time/patience to work on these. The cabinets are a little rough, so I eventually will probably refinish them and plan to make a few of the tweaks suggested elsewhere on the bb, although right now they sound amazing. I'm running them off a 12-watt Stromberg Carlson that belonged to my wife's grandmother and was about to be thrown out when her house was being prepared for sale. A friend who makes electric guitars and refurbs amps spent several months recapping the amp, replacing resistors, etc. I'm sure I'll eventually run the Cornwalls on a spicier tube amp, but at the moment I have the best $500 stereo in the world. And I'm having too much fun showing my audiophile friends how good the 40-year-old dust bucket that belonged to a little old lady from Norway, Maine and was headed for the garbage can sound with a $120 investment. As for the cat "not being in the know," that may be changing. My listening chair has become his favorite seat in the house since I hooked up the Cornwalls. He seems to have a particular affinity for Grace Jones and Marc Ribot (my reference disks). Thanks for all of your help. Other suggestions for tweaks and modifications are more than welcome.
  3. I overestimated my cat! A day after losing out on a pair of cornwalls on ebay, I ran into a klipsch fanatic at a local shop who sold me a pair for less than half the price i was going to pay. Only problem is they don't have grills (it looks like they weren't inteneded to have grills as their is no way to mount them and the front panel is flush with the sides). My cat, who is very good at not scratching the furniture, could not reisist the cornwalls any more than I could. Last night he put two tiny tears (less than 1/8" inch) right in the middle of one of the paper dust caps. Three questions 1) It seems like a I can do a DIY repair of the small tears, since the dust caps have no real affect of sonic performance (correct?). Any suggestions for how to make a home repair, what kind of glue to use, etc? 2) How would you build and attach a grill for Cornwalls set up like this? 3) Would you use pine or oak for the cat's prosthetic paws?
  4. Just getting into tubes and had an early-60s vintage Stromberg-Carlson ASR-433 recapped by a friend - sounds amazing with my kg3.5, but, at 12 watts, doesn't have quite enough juice to drive them. I'll be using this as system in my office (12'x25') and am looking for smaller speakers that will get the best out of a low power tube amp. suggestions? Thanks
