  1. Put the door as close to a corner as you can, so it does not interfere with speaker placement. In a perfectly square room, reflections and interference will be double plus ungood. In this case I'd look into some real sound treatments, like SoundBusters.

  2. Their web site says they use a "Cirrus" digital signal processor. Even if they're using other people's DSPs, a lot of the interconnects and whatnot could still be different? Looking closely, the noise/signal ratio and distortion aren't quite as nice as the Rotel stuff I've been looking at today, nor the Aragon stuff.

  3. Thanks to everyone who replied. After reading some of Rotel's literature I'm really questioning how important having a 7.1 system is to me right now. The HK can do preamp out, so after I get my RS-7s I'll probably look to one of their multichannel amps, then do the preprocessor next year some time.

So much gear, so little time.

Dreamscape was a messed up film!

You know, even though technology keeps making things more "real" and dynamic, we're no better at telling stories than we ever were. I still love the David Lynch version of Dune, for example :)

  4. Well, I think monoblocks is probably more extreme than I'll ever go. (thats what I say now anyway) So I'll want a 5+ channel amp and a pre pro that can do 7.1 I'm wondering at what point we'll need to think about 8.1 or 10.1 ?

Perhaps I'll look into what a used Aragon Stage One setup would run me. Should I just check Ebay ?

  5. In a moment of weakness I bought this movie on superbit. I've always thought the film was well done and the musical score by Wojec Kilar is just awesome. I only had a VHS copy before, but the film just seemed awesome in this presentation.

  6. Lets say a higher end AVR receiver was $3-4k. If you were to spend that same amount of money on a separate pre-processor and amplifier, are you likely to get a better sound? I guess it depends on what you're getting, right? My ideal would probably be an Aragon Stage One with suitable amp but to buy that stuff new is a loooooooong way off. I could always get the amp sooner and just use my AVR as a pre/pro?

What are some opinions on "really good" and "really good for $4k" separates?

  7. There should be some form of ISO standards or some independent party that "certifies" the ratings. Otherwise its like sports cars: my car is rated for 227 HP but only 160 or so actually make it to the wheels :)

  8. I know, VCRs are "so yesterday." But there are things I have, like the original Star Wars movies, that will most likely never come out on DVD. What do I need to look for in a solid VCR ? S-VHS and S-video out? Anything else? Does it need to have the Pro-Logic II sticker on it ?

  9. Thats one thing about these forums dawg, everyone here will tell you that the more expensive gear is _always_ worth it. Many will say that the highest end RX-7 is "essential".

My opinion: The referece series is totally worth it. RF-5s and up are essential.
