  1. How good, on average, are the receivers in Pioneer's old SX line? And also, how do they compare with the HK x30s? I've hooked up a Pioneer SX 750 to my Fortes and it sounds nice. It does indeed sound different, but I can't tell whether it is 'better' or not.
  2. Does anyone have a copy of this? Or know of a place where I can get this?
  3. Or, if they don't steam. Buy an M-Audio Audiophile and hook it up to your receivers tape out. Excellent recording quality and from the computer, you can put it on almost any format you want.
  4. I just use my HK430's tape out to my M-Audio Audiophile 24/96. It works really well, the recording quality is very excellent. It works for recording vinyl, too.
  5. I'm curious though, where can I find the cap for the main fuse? It doesn't have to be original, as long as it fits.
  6. Well, I went back to the flea market after I posted here and picked up two more receivers. A Pioneer SX-720 and the HK630. Here's the pics. and, of course, the HK430 that I've been using... I got the Scott for $24, the Pioneer for $50, and the HK630 for $44. Think I got pretty good deals? Sorry for all the pics, those of you with slower connections. The Pioneer and the HK seem to work perfectly fine. I can't test the Scott since it's missing the main power fuse along with the cap that goes over it. And, on a sidenote, please ignore that turntable. I do NOT use that.
  7. and I picked up a Scott 260 Solid State amplifier for $26. Are these any good? How do these compare to the HK 430? They also had an HK630 there, but they were asking $50 for it. Oh and there was a pair of MINT KG4s being sold for $100. I didn't have $100 on me, so I was about to go to the bank. BUT some guy walked in and handed him a bill for it. Pissed me off.
  8. If I'm not mistaken, there are two versions of the original Klipsch Forte. The earlier ones that say 4 ohms on them and the newer ones that say 8. My pair says 4 on them. Are there any significant differences between the earlier and later Fortes or did Klipsch relabel them or something. Also, the sensitivity written on my speakers is 96db. Klipsch's website pegs the Forte I at 98db. Are the newer 8ohm versions more sensitive?
  9. I'm not necessarily looking to buy, though I wouldn't pass by the oppurtunity if one came up, but I've been looking around on ebay and I've seen them sell from around $500 to over $1000. I wasn't sure what the "normal" price was for one.
  10. Just curious, what's the average price for a used Cornwall I nowadays?
  11. My other two channel setup...
  12. Well, I don't have anything special so don't laugh. 1986 Klipsch Fortes H/K 430 M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 (for my music server) JVC XL-V400 (a cd player made in 1985, still works fine, though I don't use it much) Fisher MT-100 turntable (I don't really know how to adjust it but it sounds decent, I don't think it spins at a constant speed though.) Pathetic huh?
  13. I notice a few people here 'upsample' their music. Does this do anything to the music even if the source is at 44.1 khz?
  14. Why should it matter if he was in some band(s)? Even if he were in the most famous of all bands, that wouldn't mean he should get special treatment or that his words/opinions mean more than those of us who aren't "famous" or whatever else you'd like to say. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I read that post and it came across to me as "do you know what you just did!? you disagreed with so and so, do you know who he is!?"
  15. Well I'm not necessarily unhappy with my SB Live, I've had it for many years and it works well. However, I feel like it's the "weak link" in my system. I also know a lot of people here have high end cd players/turntables while I am using just a cheapo $50 soundcard from a computer. It somehow makes me think I'm missing something. Also, currently I have the audio going to the HK via analog out. I'm also pretty sure the HK430 does not have a DAC.
  16. Currently, I am using a computer to supply my music to my stereo, mainly because I have a LARGE amount of audio on it, and it would be rather inconvenient for me to use another medium at the time. I have the HK430 connected to my SB Live via an adapter cable purchased at radioshack. What ways do you think I can improve this setup? Should I buy a DAC and plug that into the Live's digital out? Or should I buy an M-Audio soundcard, which I've read was good.
  17. I know that, for some reason, people like to look down on Klipsch as an 'audiophile' company even if they've never heard any Klipsch speakers and, while going through some newsgroup posts, I came across a person who made some comments about the Klipschorn. I'll paste part of his message here. I agree 100% with everything you said. However, you did miss something - a big advantage that Klipshorns have over all other reasonably priced speakers, that is "largeness" of the sound, for lack of a real way to describe it. An orchestra played through those things sounds so huge when compared to other speakers that most other speakers when played on real world amps just fall flat. Granted, it is not an audiophile-type sound, and phases are all over the place, but they do a real good job of the "you are there" sound. Besides that, you can find them for reasonable prices (used, of course). What does he mean by "phases are all over the place"? And also, why does it not have an "audiophile-type sound"? From reading all the good things about the Klipschorn (though I've never heard it myself) it's hard to believe that so many people can bash it. I'm not specifically talking about this guy, as he does praise the K-horn a little bit, but there are others who simply call it a horrible speaker. Why is this?
  18. "They use the guitars and play along with the music to get some dynamics." That has to be one of the funniest comments I've ever read.
  19. ... and it sounds just wonderful. Definitely way better than the Pioneer RX that I replaced. The highs just sound a lot better, before it sounded as if the tweeters on my Fortes were not working. But now, everything is really clear and more life-like. However, the left channel cuts out every once in a while and if I turn the balance all the way to left I can faintly hear music. The channel usually turns back on after a while, though. Will a simple cleaning fix this? The volume control is not scratchy at all. Also, if I push down the mono toggle the left channel works.
  20. I would also like to know where I could get these. The ones for my Fortes are umm... missing.
  21. Well I pushed in the woofer and observed the radiator. It was pushed at but after a second or so goes back in a bit (but not to its original positon). Then I tried it on my other Forte, the one that sounds fine, and it did the very same. Is this supposed be this way or is it supposed to stay out and not move in at all? My other Forte sounds fine, as far as I can tell, anyway). Also, I don't think the glue thing is the problem, it's more like a vibrating sound than a rasping. I'm located in Sacramento, CA so I think I'm a bit far.
  22. Well, I went home and rotated the PR 180 degrees as you said but it did nothing. The irritating sound is still there and it's not subtle either. Sorry Gil, I wasn't able to see your post as my internet at home is still down. I'll try that today and let you know. Also, when putting the PR back on, one of the screws would not tighten all the way, i.e., it just kept spinning. Could this be a problem as well? Again, thank you all for your help.
  23. Thanks for your help. I'll try it as soon as I get home. I may not be able to reply until tomorrow... the internet at my house has been down for the past week. Again thanks, I'll try what you said and report back,
  24. I bought a pair of Fortes and one of the speakers makes a very awful sound when a loud bass note hits. The sound from the woofer itself seems to be fine, however the passive radiator in the back seems to vibrate 'too much' causing the sound. While comparing that speaker's passive radiator to the other's, I noticed that the radiator moves a lot more than the other one. Also, if I'm only playing music at a relatively low to moderate volume, tilting the entire speaker forward will eliminate the problem, and I'm assuming this is so because the gravity prevents the radiator from moving out as much. Is this a common problem with passive radiators? Do they just wear out? Is there an easy way to fix the problem? Thanks in advance for your help. Sorry if I'm not specific enough or what not, I'm not too familiar with the technical terms of everything.
