Hi all, I'm finally upgrading to 5.1! (yay, took me how long?) Thing is, I have a pair of Klipsch Chorus-II speakers which means I really do not need a sub. The Chorus-II's cover the bass range so well I could not ask for better. I'm wondering if NOT having a sub will be a problem for getting correct audio from modern 5.1 titles, i.e. if I connect these two amazing full-range front speakers will I get full-range output or will I be missing the bass? Also, do I need to look for a particular feature in an amp that will allow me to mix the sub channel in with the front L/R? So far I'm considering the Onkyo TX-SR608 which can be had for around the mid- $400's. (Open to suggestions but I'll be reluctant to cross $600.) Oh, and I'm totally willing to jury-rig. In fact I would simply get a small mixer board to mix the sub channel into the left and right preamp signals, but with everything being digital I don't think I have the right access to the right signals at the right places. If there's a receiver with a pro mixer style pre-out and pre-in, I could make that work.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll look into those. Since the whole set is being bought new, I'm considering a variety of options. Plus I think he'd get tired of trying to use his PC to play DVDs in his living room... it's just too complicated, and there's that fan noise and all.

My family has two pair of Chorus II's. I truly love those speakers. I feel your pain, having to sell them.

Hello all. Looks like the forum just gained a member. Looks like a cool place! So, my brother just got his first job, a nice high-paying thing for Microsoft, and he moved to Washington with no stereo or video equipment except for his computer and some hand-me-down Creative Labs speakers, and the family wants to get him a real nice speaker rig for his living room. He wants something he can run through his computer, using the PC to play his movies, CDs, mp3s, everything. So, given that info, what do you guys think about the Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1, along with some wall brackets, as a living room audio system for movies? Or will that system only provide a good sound field to a single seat in front of a computer screen? Is it so much better to get a set of compact "home theater" speakers that we should let him buy a set of those, and just get him new computer parts instead? He lives in an apartment with an open living room / kitchen combo, and his listening space will be about 15 feet wide and 13 feet deep (13 feet from back wall to TV wall) seating 5 people max, usually only 1 to 3. He isn't the type to blast his audio to hear the pure wattage, or to go for maximum bass rumble. He will just want a clear dolby digital or DTS sound field so he and his friends can hear the bullets whizz by their heads when they watch Matrix. This will be his first ever 5.1 speaker system, and the Promedia speakers would give him the option of upgrading to a full HT rig and keeping the promedias for his computer.
