Hi all, I have been lurking here and recently purchased a pair of Scotts. A 299-B amp and a 310-D tuner. They were purchased in 1961 and were used up until 1965. I got these from a friend and have all the original paperwork on them, even a letter that the previous owner wrote to Scott about using (1) 16 ohm speaker and (1) 8 ohm speaker. They actually sent a hand written response to the owner.
Anyway, my friends grandfather owned them and died in 1965. The Scotts were never used since.
I usually hang out at AudioAslyum using the same moniker. I followed some advice and used the "light-bulb trick" to slowly power them up( I did not have a working variac).
My question is on one channel the 7189 telefunken tube plates are glowing orange(I know this is bad). The amp works and the sound is fine except when the amp is idle I get static and hissing type sounds from the channel with the tubes glowing. As I get an input signal the static/crackling/hiss sound goes away. The static/hiss sounds stay at the same level even with the vol. turned all the way down. I do have the schematics for both, but do not have the test equipment to adjust the AC or DC adjustments. I do have a volt meter to check the bias. I have not swapped the 7189s side to side to see, but I did buy a pair of new Sovtek EL84's to try and get the same sounds from the amp, but no glowing plates.
Any help would be nice.
Tha amp has all telefunken 7189 outputs and 2 telefunken phase inverter tubes. The 12ax7s are all black plate Scott labeled except for one which is a telefunken. The 310-D tuner works fine and has all the original 1961 date code Scott and Telefunken tubes. The face plates do not have one scratch and are mint. They do not have covers. If there is any interest I will probably sell them together as a pair. I already own a sherwood S-5500II and S-3000III amp and tuner. I will have some pics this weekend. I would rather someone here buy them and have the amp checked out by someone like Craig of NOS Valves then to sell them on ebay.
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to see what you all think.
