    Denon 2803

I've had one for a week and the setup is not that difficult, though it did take a while to figure out why my sub was not getting a signal. The manual (explanations & info on features) and the remote are quite the opposite - they suck. Sound, while a bit warm, complements my Klipsches well. If doing it again though, I would have opted for the Sherwood Newcastle r765 because its got a universal remote (not this imbecilic learning remote), more power, fewer features I won't use, the sound is great and its a hell of a lot cheaper. Live and learn.
  2. Settings: front: large (heresy) center: small (rc-25) sub: yes, 60 hz, LFE (Hsu vtf2) surround: small (RC35) mode: auto cd connection: analog dvd: optical The only way to get sound from the sub (it worked with my old sherwood) is to test tone it. I can then play one disk (cd or dvd) with a signal to the sub, the disk ends, the sub goes to standby and no more signal. The only way to get sound again is to repeat the test sequence for the sub. Sub is connected from the sub pre out to mono in at the sub. Tech support from Denon has been of no use so far(reset the microprocessor, is the sub connected? dah! etc.). I've tried Neo cinema & music, Dolby PL2 music & cinema, matrix and 5 channel stereo playback and no sub in all modes. Manual and remote suck big time. Now takes three clickers to watch a bloody dvd because the denon remote does not (can't?) learn to operate anything. Stephen
  3. Narrowed it down to four: Budget pix: Sherwood Newcastle R765 v. Denon AVR2803 Blow the budget: Sherwood Newcastle R863 v. Denon AVR3803 Not much price difference between the pairings. Like the Sherwood appearance & sound, but not their fixed LFE bass crossover. Spec wise the pairings are very close. Price wise the Denon's a bit more. Could only audition the Denons at the abnoxious big box outlets with limited & inferior speaker pairings. Tempted to go for the 3803 if I could find it closer to my what the hell, blow the budget at 600 - 650. 5. My antique Sherwood amp is dying and I'm looking for a new receiver. It will be used in a 5.1 configuration (heresies up front w/ RC-25, RB35's in back and Hsu sub) for music, TV and movies. I've been looking at the Sherwood R-765, R-863 or Denon 2803. The latter would push my budget a little, but are not out of the question. Was almost set on the 765, thinking its a good choice while I wait for HDTV prices to come down to my range. Then thought about splurging a little. Thoughts, opinions?
  6. When did you order them? Hsu site shows them out of stock til late March?
  7. Looking to add a subwoofer to my ancient Heresies. Unfortunately my budget is limited to $450+/- because I need a new a/v receiver. Have thought about Klipsch RW10 or 12, JBL S120PII, Infinity PS12 or something equivalent. For now my usage is 80/20 music (jazz, classical, Dead) to movies. Its quite a ways to an audio store (80 or 120 miles!) and I cannot stand Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. so I may not be able to listen to many. Thoughts?
