I bought this player a few months ago as a replacement for a Marantz CD-80. The Marantz was the first CD-player with a sound I could enjoy but somehow could not keep up with my old Thorens TD125/SMEIII. My wife wanted a spinner for movies DVD, I read some raves about the 963SA so I bought it (I never buy new audio gear, honest). Well movies DVD are great indeed. As audio gear I played a lot of CD's (no SACD's in my collection, yet). The sound was nice, not great, a lot of details but somehow it lacked the authority of the old CD-80. Then I had it tweaked by AudioArt (Holland) for euro 200 (www.audioart.nl). The change was incredible. Now it surpassed the analog frontend. It needed some playing in but then I was in Nirwana. A friend of mine, serious musiclover with some serious British audio equipment, was in a shock as he heard this player. My advise: try it standard and if you think it's boring, have it tweaked. 2. Thank you Tom for your comprehensive answering. I guess I have to rearrange my opinions about complex Xovers. First I'll do the trick with the 1uF bypass for the tweeter. No Hovlands here (Holland) but Auricaps or Mcaps (silver in oil) might work as well. The funny thing is: The laScala's make music in a very satisfying way, it's hard to believe it can be improved. I'm so curious, it's like an adventure. Well it's great fun. Michel
  3. Hello there, great forum. After looking around for interesting info I have some questions concerning crossover updating. Since a couple of years I'm the happy owner of a pair of 1979 LaScala's with AA crossovers. The amp I use is an Audion Silvernight with NOS drivers (6922 + 5687). After a recent listening session, a friend, who listens to Quads electrostatics, was in despair and disbelief. He couldn't figure out why horns could sound that good! Still I'm wondering if renewing the crossovers will be rewarding. My first thoughts were replacing the inductors and the enigmatic(for me) autoformer, keeping the oil caps (they're just fine IMHO). I already removed the zeners from the network. Now I'm a little confused about alternatives like the ALKs. First question: do the ALK's work properly with a SETamp? Second question: Is it a clever idea to substitute the autoformer by a more or less ordinary crossover or is replacing it by an UTC #3619 or T2A the more sensible thing to do? Any help would be appreciated. Michel
