These look pretty beat. If the wood were to be refinished would this be worthwhile(assuming drivers work)? I was going to buy some la scalas but if I could get these for cheap it would be sweet. Also what year are these, and what is up with the serial #? Such a beautiful speaker that needs some repair.

The exponential is better IMO. Just listen to the speakers with the exponential horn, the klipschorn and lascala. Then listen to the reference series, pick which one sounds best to you.

This would be a great time to try a diy sub. Partsexpress.com sells drivers and amps, and home depot or similar store will sell 3/4 mdf board. You could make an awsome sub for below $500 with a nice big amp.

I could never hear a difference between to well designed* functional(not broken) cables of the same gauge. Numerous ABX tests of hundreds of so called audiophiles also supports this, none of them could tell a difference. This is also why McIntosh used to use lamp cord for their demonstrations at shows like CES, the only reason they don't use the lamp cord now is because people would talk about the wires instead of the products they were trying to sell.
*Well designed means no battery cables or anything else that would negatively affect the signal going through the wire.

Denon, Sony, Harmon Kardon, Okyno, Toshiba, Pioneer....
My first choice would be the Denon with the Burr brown dacs, I think it is around $100-$150. Or the Pioneer 563a a universal(cd/dvd/sacd/dvda) player for $135 at BB(or it was a week ago on sale). Other than that cheap DVD players make the best cd players because the DAC has to handle much more data from a DVD than a CD, so CDs are no sweat for a DVD player. I think there is an $80 Toshiba that should fit your needs perfectly. It is really a choice of how much do you want to spend and what features do you want.

It was room acoustics and then the crossover being set wrong. Poor room acoustics will make any sub sound bad, no matter how good it is. Standing waves , room nodes and nulls are the worst for subs. And then the crossover was set to high, and you should have asked him to set it around 80 or to wherever you have yours set right now. I would still recomend the SVS over the klispch any day.

I own a HK avr225 and love it. The 7200 is even better. I know at least 2 people who own them and they won't shut up about how much they like the 7200. They are also a great deal right now at onecall, $839. I am sure you might be able to talk them down a bit.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion whether it is right or wrong. In this case he is wrong and has probably never heard a set of klipschorns.
There are a lot of people out their who think blose, wait bose sounds good, just let them be.
It is all about the enjoyment of the music anyway.

Sony NC-685v. 5 disc dvd/cd/sacd player. Very nice IMO.

Congrats on the new gear. No Sony can play dvd audio, but it will play the dts track on a dvd audio disc, if the disc has a dts track. But it will definitely have a nice picture and sound. I have the 685v and I love it. For the price those sonys are hard to beat. Hope you enjoy your new dvd player.

Well the best way to troubleshoot is unplug things and see what changes.
Does the sub hum when plugged into power only? If so a tripplite isobar or similar power filtration will help, if it is a 2 prong cord flip it aroud and try.
Hook up the sub cable, this can get more and more confusing, just start with the reciever and add components till you get the hum.
The sub cable doesn't need a monster y cable at the end, just the one cable is good enough. The speaker cables are the other way of hooking up the sub to recievers without a sub woofer pre out. The way you have it is fine. Try to narrow down your problems and ask more questions when you have them, good luck.

There is one thing that will also affect the sound later in the day, and that is you. Your ears can get tired throughout the day, driving around and hearing lots of noise can trie your ears. To prove this listen to your speakers in the morning, and do a lot of things during the day in fairly noisy enviroments and then come home and listen to them. Normally the speakers will sound a little harsh and fatiuging(sp?). This may not be the cause of all the troubles you are having but can be a factor.

This has been debated before. Tom (from SVS) said that they sound equally good but some people can't fit a big box in their room others prefer the tube. They both sound great IMO.

Did you turn up the subwoofer level?
If that doesn't work, I would assume that one of the wires to the woofer is loose, so take off the amp and see if it is loose. If you do not want to do it yourself I do believe there is a waranty on the pro medias so you could have them repaired or replaced.

I think just the Klipsch in the corner should be fine. There is not much to gain by adding a smaller sub to do the same as the big one you already have. You can actually hurt your sound worse if the subs are out a phase at certian frequencues, and the room nodes and nulls will also be affected(maybe good maybe bad). But if you choose to run two subs here are two articles that will help you alot.

I hope those help. another easy method is to put the sub where you sit, prop it up to head level, and then crawl on the floor to see where the sound is best. You will look like a fool to anyone watching, but it will definitely sound good when you put the sub in the proper place. Good luck.

Aurelex makes some amazing diffusors. But for bass traps or absorbtion pannels look at www.realtraps.com just look at the absorbtion coefficients of their pannels. Any good acoustic product will make the room sound better, but better products will make the room sound nothing short of amazing.
That is good of aurelex to offer free advise, but like they say, it is the best advice with the data you give them. If you really want to go all out hire and engineer to come in your room, measure and give suggestions.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. What I meant by things to check on is like watch for a certain part or certain types of damage, things of that nature.
I agree 100% about room acoustics being one of the most important things in a room. Right now I have absorbtion pannels at all the first reflection points, people see my room and think I am crazy with the pannels suspended from the ceiling. I plan on adding some diffusion pannels in the summer. Unfortunately my current living situation will not allow for the pannel bass traps I would like to do, but that will change in a few years.
I read a post about a klipsch heritage dealer in chicago, why aren't they listed in the dealer locator? I live in Milwaukee, WI and really want to hear some of these, however it seems the dealer in chicago is the closest possible place to go. Is there any places closer to milwaukee where I would be able to listen?

I have been doing a good amount of reading on horn speakers, and the klipschorns seem to be one of the best. I still have a few basic questions about them.
Are there any good years or bad years? If so which ones? Is there anything to check on when the speakers are used? Is there any differences in finishes(besides the look)?
Are the new heritage Klipschorns or other recreations from klipsch as good as they used to be?

To answer the original question. I think your bass in the kitchen problem will still be there regardless of bass traps in the room. You would want some mass loaded vinyl on the ceiling, then maybe two layers of drywall with a resilient channel. This would be the first start towards stopping the bass. Mass loaded vinyl could also be put under the flooring in the kitchen. After you do this you would also want to seal any air gaps in the listening room (ex: weatherstrip the door).
Now if you would like to make the bass in your room sound better, get good bass traps. Something like a membrane absorber or Mondo traps from Real Traps (see link below). Put a few of those in your rooms corners and the bass will sound amazing. Just take a look at the absorbtion coeffiecients. Also if you email the guys at real traps they will always give some good advice. Or you could build a membrane absorber, which is slightly more difficult but also fun. Just measure the modes and nulls before you build one, because certian sizes work better at certian frequencies.
