  1. Duke, No, It wouldn't work. Most of the difficulty in cutting out a K-Horn Bass Bin lies in the complexity of the compound mitres and the severity of some of the angle cuts. You need to set up various jigs to cut the parts. It's not like tracing a template onto a piece of plywood and cutting it out with a Skilsaw. Don
  2. Shawn and Tony: It seems like I remember a thread from some time ago mentioning a guy named Shinall or something like that. I can't find his web page, (probably got him name wrong). Anyway, He was building what looked like exact copies of K/H Horns, Lascalas, Belles. I wonder if he had any trouble? The Super K/H Horn project sounds cool. Where can you get Jubilee Bass Bin plans? Don
  3. D-Man: I'd never seen the insides of a K-horn until I built one. It's not a problem. In the next week or so I'm going to assemble two bass horns from the parts I'm going to offer in the Kits. The idea is to take digital photos of all the steps of the assembly process to be included in the instruction manual. Be patient. I hope to have it all together in a few weeks. Don
  4. Duke, I guess I better get in gear. Don
  5. Consistant, I'm working on shipping costs now. I should have some numbers together in a week or so. Thanks, Don
  6. D-Man I've tried Altec 416s in a set of K-Horns and they sound as good as or even better than K-33s. Don
  7. Hows that for a home theater system!
  8. DrWho, Although I was leaning toward just trying to develop a K-Horn bass bin kit,I would consider doing custom work.Send me some plans and I'll give you a quote. What I'm thinking about doing next is building a set of K-Horn bass bins so I can document with pictures the assembly process for the instruction manual that needs to go with the kit.I was thinking that if anyone on the forum wanted to build their own K-Horns I'd let them have these bass bins for just the price of materials and shipping if they tried them out and posted a review. What do you think? Don
  9. Consistant, Ithink the idea is doable. I could do a whole K-Horn kit if necessary. Bear in mind, the assembler would have to have some woodworking skills as well as access to tools such as an air compressor, brad nailer ect. That being said,If you possess the skills necessary to assemble the bass horn kit you should be able to build your own top horn enclosure, front panel, grills ect.Anything you do yourself is going to save you money. But getting back to your oringinal point concerning the best horn loaded speaker;if you take hte original bass horn design coupled with let's say Al Ks Trachorn and high end networks with some good tweeters you might just hit the bullseye.
  10. Scriven, Thanks for the help. You're right I am search engine challenged. But I can build a helluva speaker. Thanks Don
  11. BS Check out Corner Horn Project. The last post was on 2/21/2005. Don
  12. Edmond, What I'm thinking about doing is offering a K Horn bass horn kit for around $1,000.00 including shipping. You would still have to build the top horn enclosure and the front panel. Right now I'm still working on shipping costs and still determine how much interest there would be in this product. Thanks! Don
  13. D-Man I gotcha. Yeah, I could do that. I wonder if anybody would be interested? Thanks, Don
  14. D-Man, I guess I didn't make myself clear. I can build and ship K-Horn bass bins to anyone on this forum for a price.I wanted to determine if anyone here would be interested. The DIYer could then finish the construction with any materials and components he or she wished. What the heck is a flat kit? Don
  15. I was thinking with all the attention being given to modifying exsisting K-Horns,(Al K's Trachorn, Altec 511s,Al's and Bob C's crossover upgrades ect.) why not start out with a brand new bass bin and build your own hybrids from the ground up? Then you could build your own custom horn enclosure to house whatever mid -horn,tweeter and crossover you choose and finish your new speakers as you wish.It seems like I've noticed on more than one occassion people saying that the complexity of the woodworking in the bass bin section has kept them from attempting their own K-horn project.I've built several of these now and have not had any problems with their performance. At this point I'm trying to determine if there would be any interest in this service. I greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Don
  16. Tom, Thanks. Yeah it is cool having exactly what you want in a speaker. This afternoon I've been messing around with the autoformer tap settings on the ALK networks and I've got what I think is the best sounding settings. I'm testing the sound with Van Morrison's Moondance. It sounds like Van's right here with us. Anyhow the purple heart is not as dark as it looks in the pictures. The finish is 4 coats of high gloss poly. That's why when you use the flash on the camera you get all that glare. I've that over time purple heart will turn brown when exposed to sunlight. I don't know but in 8 months I haven't seen a change in color. Don
  17. J.4knee It's the Selenium ADF-23 horn lens adapter from Parts Express. The part number is 264-322. Bear in mind you can't use either of the two exsisting holes in Altec horn . You need to clamp the adapter to the horn flange and drill three new holes. Don
  18. Guys, Thanks for the links. I'll check it out and let you know what I come up with. Don
  19. Guys, Recently I was looking at some round wood mid-range horns on E-Bay. The item number is 5780669080. The guy wanted almost $2,000.00 for them. I'm a fairly compentant wood turner and I was thinking I'd love to take a shot at building a couple of turned wood horns. Do any of you guys know how to come up with a plan to turn a horn that would reproduce frequencies required in a K-Horn Mid-Range? Thanks, Don
  20. Guy's The mid range drivers are Atlas PD-5VH. According to Bob Crites they are the same driver as the K-55.Anyway after tinkering with different settings on the auto-former they sound fantastic. The high end is defenently better than the first set of K-Horns I built using K-401 horns and T-35 tweeters. Now if I just had a bigger house to put them in I'd be all set!
  21. sunnysal, I was planning on using Altec 902 drivers but after reading what Al K said about the chance of blowing the phase plugs out of them crossed at 400hz I opted for the Atlas drivers. I still have the 902s so I guess I could still try them in the K-Horns but I think I'll save them for my next project a set of Belles. bluesboy
  22. Wolfram The design of the bass bin is exactly the same as the stock K-Horn. The only difference is the front panel, which is made of solid hardwood instead of just the plain plywood panel. Also, the front panel is removable so that it can be shipped separately from the bass bin to protect it from damage. The top horn enclosure is also removable. As far as the turntable is concerned I suspended it out of necessity because the floor bounces so bad that it was making records skip when we were trying to tape them.
  23. AL, Thanks for the reply. I think the reason the thread didn't get very many responses was because the pictures didn't turn out very good. I'm going to try and take some more that show better detail. One of the reasons I'm displaying the horns is because I couldn't come up with a satisfactory design for a grill frame that wouldn't restrict the sound. Besides, I decided I liked the look of the horns exposed too.
