  1. I paid $20 for a really nice reissue! That one is WAAAAY out of my league!!! I'm sure Allan has an original though. He has 'em all! Allan could retire and sell an album every couple of weeks to live off of.

I have an old radio station copy from KJAZ, a long gone station out of Berkeley, CA that I bought 30 years ago! I think I paid about ten dollars, more or less!

The jacket has the call letters stamped on the back and isn't in great shape, mabe VG-, borderline VG--the vinyl is in solid VG+ shape--some pops here and there but it plays fine-much better now with the mono tonearm and cartrdige.

I would STILL love to have that mint copy at Atomic, but they want two grand for it and that is WAAAAAY out of my league too!!

I think you're right about living off my records if I had to--but that would be a VERY painful way to support myself!!!

  2. Replacing caps: good idea!

Replacing tweeters (assuming they are up to snuff): VERY bad idea!!

This is my opinion and I have vast experience messing around with 1964 Cornwalls which I have owned for over 25 years. I have ALK crossovers with Jensen PIO caps. I also have a set of originals with more garden variety oil caps. Whatever you decide, it's a good idea to update the crossovers.

I tried the Crites tweets--they were shrill and piercing to my ears and did not intergrate well with the other drivers. Stick with the T-35s--you probably have nice alnico ones--if they're blown you'd be better off rebuilding yours than going with the Crites tweeters.

Again, this is only my opinion . . .

  3. I was surprized by Dr Who's comment about speed metal, too; but I have a theory...

The virtuosity of horn players in popular music has declined. Back when jazz was king it was not so unusual to hear a sax solo develop and extend for many minutes.. in more recent times, modern popular music has relagated the sax to either accompanyment phrases or breif uninspiring solos of simple slow pentatonic scales entrapped in the modes of the song's chord progression (classic pop tune third verse solo). Many modern era listeners to popular music may not know the work from the old jazz players or may never have had exposure to it because of modern radio and CD markets. I'm not saying Dr Who has not heard this, but he represents a younger generation of listeners with more exposure to or involvement with modern popular music.

One area of popular modern music where the soloist does play fast extended solos is in speed metal, and the more accomplished of the lead guitar players use multiple melodic modes (many of them stolen from jazz); these modes being not based on the simple chord progression.. to good effect. Some of these solos take many minutes to develop and extend their ideas.

I can see how Dr Who would make this connection nowadays. Fusion might be a better connection - its jazzy and also has fast players, heres one I like

    Uh . . . .Okay, then . . . .

  4. I worked directly across the street from this place from 1979 though 1982. I still make sure to stop in EVERY SINGLE TIME I am in the Bay Area. Best Bar B Que I've ever had in California: When I worked in this neighgorhood it was a burnt out slum with hookers and dope dealers on every corner--now it's gone "up scale," but Doug Abides!! He doesn't have goat every day any longer--only once in a while--but if you've never had bar-b-qued goat you simply have not lived!!

I heard recently that Doug passed away and the place is for sale. As far as I know it's still open, but maybe not for long. . . What a bummer . . .

  5. The linesatge in my Conrad Johnson preamp that I use in my office system uses a pair of 6DJ8s--I have triend the 7308 Amperex, 6DJ8 Bugle Boys (NOISY!) and finally a pair of Valvo E88CC which have proved to be VERY nice--quiet as quiet can be and they have a nice, rich and smooth character--not overly detailed.

But the most important thing is to find a pair that are dead quiet, so I suggest you buy them from a solid tube vendor--on ebay you're liable to get real crap.

  6. Would Heresys fit in your space? A nice pair of new H-IIIs would be WAAAAAAY cool!

Of if you want to buy used, there's a pair for sale a bit lower on this page in the "Heresy III price?" thread. If you have the room, I think this might well be the BEST small speaker you will find for a 300B SET amp.

  7. I have four systems, but one of them is at work. I have a few pieces of gear sitting in boxes that I should probably sell off, but I just CAN'T sell the Fisher 500C or the Marantz 10 tuner even though both have been sitting unused for years. I sold my Altecs on ebay a couple of years ago and sold off two MC-240 McIntosh amps within the last 4-5 years. It felt good shipping them off, actually!! They were just SITTING there on a shelf! I took the money from the sales and spent ALL of it on really expensive old jazz records. 300 lbs of gear for a couple of pounds of vinyl!

Like Gary, I am at my limit--not because of my wife who is VERY cool about all of this, but because I am anti-clutter. I do spent lots of time and effort and money on vinyl, but that's ANOTHER obsession--and it all fits in one small room (the closet under the stairs, actually)!!

  8. The first record I ever bought was "I Want To Hold Your Hand" single by the Beatles at the Singer Sewing Machine store. What year was that? 1964? I was about 7 or 8 years old.

The first LP I ever bought was "Revolver."

Just think! I COULD have been buying "A Love Supreme!" DOH!

  9. Allan, help me out here.

I looked at the other listings from Atomic, and I see Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section @275.00, but + 11 is a no bid @5.00. I would love to get a copy of + 11, but I don't know if it would be better to get a reissue or an original pressing (I run a Basis 1400 with a modified RB300 arm and a Grado Sonata reference cart). I have been following Gary's new 124 set-up for his mono collection. I don't have the luxury of two set-ups.

Would this Contemporary pressing of + 11 be a waste on me?

    Thanks in advance - Chuck

I sold Gary an Analogue Production reissue I picked up at Atomic for $15 used--I didn't even listen to it before I sent it to him. My mistake--it's freaking AWESOME. I think they're still in print for $30. But that one!!!

  10. I've known the brothers who own Atomic Records for about 15 years. I have SEEN this copy in person (they've had it for months in the back room and actually put it up on ebay about 3-4 months ago and it did not meet their reserve price) and it as close to perfect as a record can be and NOT be sealed and mint. It's that nice. But too expensive for me.

I actually run into these guys at clubs and swap meets too--they're honest but not ALWAYS the best graders--they have crap equipment and are NOT hifi guys in any way. But they'll take any record back no questions asked.

  11. We all should build our systems around what we like to listen to. Gary will hear in the TD-124 a totally different presentation than in his Basis. If all one listened to were perfect condition modern audiophile pressings, then a table like the Basis would be the obvious choice. But when one's collection consists of primarily vintage, original pressings that vary in condition from G+ through NM, then the TD-124 is a MUCH better choice--the TD-124/SME/SPU combonation provides not only a very musical presentation with lots of punch and incredible liveliness, but is also is THE most forgiving rig I have even owned when it comes to surface noise and clicks and pops--records that are flat-out unlistenable on my Linn (or Gary's Basis) become thoroughly enjoyable. And for someone like me who is a record collector FIRST and a hi-fi nut SECOND this a VERY big deal! Sure. it's not then end-all in detail and extension, but it makes MUSIC sound RIGHT--throughout the entire range of instruments the timbre and tone are lifelike and I'll sacrifice some detail and extension for this ANY time!

Gary, you now have two great systems--congrats!
