Yes, my 18-70 mm lens is also AF-S (G) so will autofocus. But I had a few other lenses from my late father's F90 that are AF, that I would occasionally use on my D50. I guess they wouldn't autofocus on the d3300.
The d7000 is available for $839 (and available but out of stock at $705 on amazon.ca). I hadn't thought of that. So lower megapixel count, lower max ISO, lower processor (gen 2 vs gen 4), but still a better camera huh? yes according to http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D3300-vs-Nikon_D7000
I wouldn't have it in time for next weekend either... Decisions, decisions.

The 18-55 VRII reatils for $250, but is usually purchased bundled.

Its price is high when bought on its own, but if you're buying a new Nikon camera with the lens thrown in at a modest premium, you'll be happy to know that it's a solid starter zoom. ...but there's no reason to upgrade from the previous 18-55mm lens to this one.
Hum. If I'm really not going to use it, might as well not buy it even for $50 I guess. Although it would make an inexpensive spare in case something ever happened to my 18-70. It's not like I watch every $50 I ever spend either...

Thanks guys... Yes, my 18-70 mm lens is compatible.
I considered buying the body only, the price for body only is $520 (not on sale) and the sale price with the 18-55 VRII lens is $570. So the lens is only costing me $50 plus tax.
The 18-55 VRII is f/3.5-5.6G and my 18-70 is 3.5-4.5G, so my older lens is faster at longer zoom but the new lens has VRII. Worth the $50 to decide later which to use? The new one is said to be very compact...

Strange to be bringing such a topic up here, but I know that there are several photographers among you!
My old Nikon D50 sporting a D70 18-70mm lens died with an error code about reading the SD card. Seems to be a common enough problem. I was thinking on replacing it with a C$570 Nikon D3300 w/ 18-55mm VRII lens. I am a bit worried about the short 55 mm, being used to 70 mm. Would my old non-VR lens be of comparable quality that I will be happy using it?

On my HK, 0 dB means max gain, or clipped output with clipped inputs.
Reference for me is 13 dB down from that (on a 50WPC receiver).
I likely have much more speaker headroom than I do subwoofer headroom. That's often the limiting factor.
That said, I don't watch movies at reference. Action movies about 7 dB below, and chick movies even lower.

i have yet to hang any kpt-100's as i need to make some brackets or something for them.

Here's what I did to mount the KPT-100 almost flush on the wall: Cut a piece of 1/2" birch plywood a little smaller than the speaker, stained the sides black (paint works too), fastened it to the back of the KPT-100 using machine screws using the KPT-100 mount holes, and secured the plywood to the wall using thin metal french cleats. Of course I had something solid behind the sheetrock to screw into. I had planned re-enforcements in the wall when I built the room.

I may have to drop back to the reference series since the surrounds have to me mounted on the wall.
I have wall-mounted Heresy II, but they would take up too much room for your sized room. I have KPT-100 as rears; they are smaller and mesh great with the rest of my Heritage system.

Did you try the couch rotated 90 degrees clockwise? maybe it wouldn't block off too much of the opening to the foyer and you could then put the TV and speakers on that right hand wall.

Would your TV be on the 25' wall or the 12' wall?
Excellent point. Klipschorns on the 25-foot wall would image behind the back of the room; not great. Klipschorns on the 12-foot wall would image 6.5 feet from the front wall; too close to any display. With that size room, I would go with three La Scala on the 12-foot wall and not Klipschorns.

How far is your seating position now? I was sitting about 13 feet from my 106 which I thought was perfect but once I added second row the front row is now about 10 feet which NOW IS perfect. If I sit in the back row and 16 feet it leaves me wanting bigger for sure
i'm sitting about 9.5 feet away from a 50" plasma. probably too far. that same seating position would be about 142" from a 120" screen, which is just about perfect according to a lot of sites.

I know some of you are from Indy...I'm looking at putting a projector and screen in my HT but need to sell the idea to my wife first. Are there any showrooms in the area I could visit to demo the idea to her?
I would talk you out of it. I'm not a fan of projectors. HD TV's are far superior overall, since they don't need expensive bulbs to replace. Also there is too much loss of contrast with any reflective medium (vs. transmissive for HDTV), unless your room is pitch dark. Even then, Plasma or LCD/LED HDTV's look way sharper, with greater contrast, and brighness. With the price of LCD/LED TV's coming down, you can get 80" for what a good screen/projector combo will run you.
Thumbs down on that ideal. Yes, I'm in Indy.
While I do think that the picture is better on TV screens, the sheer size of the projected screen is much more immersive.

Finally saw Gravity after 3 weeks away doing fieldwork. Quite liked it except for the physics-defying way a main character died. It's like he was being pulled away by... gravity.

How much of it is fabric? Is it all of the middle section of the ceiling?
Great idea. But I wonder how many tile I would have to replace with fabric in order to make a difference. Guess all I need to do to find out is remove some tiles!

True enough. Still, the d3300 is likely leaps and bounds beyond my old D50 so I should be okay.
Also, I could get the older d5200 (body only) for the same price as the new d3300 with lens kit.
