  1. Just trying to give the subject a different angle,SS Vs Tube For tube amp, you can change the sound with different make of tube ie. Mullard RCA GE etc they make tube with the same spec. or type ie 12ax7 el84 el84 kt88 6550. with each different maker the sound are so what different and U can tune the amp to your likeing and have a lot of fun in doing it without going to the shop for major modify work (for SS you need to, unless you are a qulified electrician.) So if you want to play around and have deep pocket try tube amp. (NOS tube can cost alot of money)
  2. Hi, I am also useing Eico HF-81 with my Forte and a second system, melody tube pre amp with Cambridge SS power amp 2x100 watts. When I listen to Vocal , Jess and Baroque music I switch to the Eico and the other time I use the SS system. The Eico is sweet that only El84 can produce. I got my Eico from E-bay last year. I modify the Eico with some new capacitor (the old one die on me after three months), Ihave to replace the old one with Jesen and Auri cap, which open up the dynamic range, and give the Eico a little bit of moden sound which goes well with the Forte. I dont know what tube you are useing in you Eico, I am useing Mullard CV4004 (12ax7) and CV4003(12au7) and Mullard El84 as power tube, it give me a very full base which I like very much. If you are interested in SET and worried that is might not have enough power, try SET with 805 tube, they are the biggest power tube (50 watt per channel), I have listen to SET with tube combo 300b pushing 805 tube, they are clean and the bass is powerful. Try changing your tube in the Eico before going for SET.

  7. We have not the chance to test it with NOS Tung-sol but we did test it with NOS GE Jan 6550A and Tung-sol are just a little bit below GE but considering that we only have less than 50 hours on the new Tung-sol and the GE are will run in already. One more point to consider is that we have problem to pust the GE to higher bias point as require by some current Amp, the best we can do is set it at .5V but amp like ARC will require set must higher (.68V). The re-issue are Russian made and the price are so what 50% more than other Russian tube. I purchase mine from TubeDepot and they offer different Bias point for selection.
  8. Just finish AB testing The Tung-sol 6550 with a group of friends, if anybody are interested the following are the result Test equipment: Image 6550 (a China made power amp 2x50watt, modify with Jesen capacitor inplace of solent) tube used Mullard CV4004 x 2 Mullard Cv4003 x 2 6550 x 4 pre-amp: Conrad Johnson PV10al Tube used CV4003 x 2 CD: copland Speakers: Forte Tested Tube: Tung-sol 6550 re-issue EH 6550 SED 6550 SED KT88 The result: The EH sound thin in compair with the other SED 6550 has more bass and mid are full SED KT88 has Full bass but less on the high end The Tung-sol 6550 are the best, Sound very musical , the top and bottom are very mush extended and mid are warm I will consider thess the best current production 6550 in the market.
  9. Thanks for the info, miss spell the amp is a int. amp ( EL84 Push Pull) Eico HF-81, 12-14 watt per channel, I hope is enough to pust the speakers. Harry
