  1. well i've positioned them a bit differently. at first i had them paralell with the wall, but now i've angled them somewhat. the improvement is quite evident, but then again, my rf-3's were positioned paralell with the wall as well.

for a room this size, 11x11, should i have them right up against the wall? (keeping them angled of course since the sound seems to be improved this way).

i suppose the paralell setups only work with larger rooms. my backwall was so close to the speaker (a little under 9 feet) that there was no room for an actual sweet spot.

im starting to enjoy these speakers a bit more.

  2. i read through everyone's posts. thank you all for trying to help me.

don't get me wrong. they're better than the rf-3ii's, but the change is just SO subtle (aside from the bass). as for purchasing heresies instead... i really don't want to go through hauling these suckers again. and i'd feel like everything was a big waste of time if i did so.

i'll definitely upgrade the crossovers. i just don't have much cash on hand at the moment. got a ticket from an nyc cop on a power trip, and had to pay for some unexpected plumbing services.

as for the university drivers not being an upgrade. i may sound foolish, but i believe the guy when he says they improved the sound. he has loads of feedback and seemed to have sold/bought some pretty high end equipment. besides, the low end isnt the problem here. it's just the midrange not being as amazing as everyone made it seem like. which is odd. although i do hear that capacitor upgrades affect that area the most.

as for these speakers being 1980's vintage, i doubt it. they have the metal horns with alnico magnets, and the grilles were the tan (i think it's called tweed?) that i see in a lot of the older speaker models. perhaps the first owner replaced the networks with ALs sometime down the line.

oh, and i finally got those grills off. being the idiot that i am, i thought the grill was attached to the moulding. 3.gif

in conclusion, i hope to be able to afford network upgrades in the near future. i hate regretting purchases. 2.gif

What is your Preamp. You have source of a PC going to an MC250?

The biggest weakest link I can think of is that AL network. There are some on this forum that are happy with them. I think they are terrible. I upgraded to ALK "universal type A" and the difference was unbelievable.

The La Scala Bass "sound" is nothing like the modern day speakers. Most would match a sub to them.

    ----------------

i have a sub. bass is NOT a problem. i like this different sound of bass that the scalas produce over the rf-3s. it has more of a "slam" type of sound. drums sound more "drummy" as well.. heh

the reason i bought these were because of everyone claiming they sounded so damn realistic that it almost felt as if the artists were in the room with them. now i assumed that was midrange superiority. i'm not really seeing much of an improvement in this area.

then again, i havent really gotten to turn them up past 90db (guessing) or so.

    no i don't have a preamp. pc -> mc250

  4. i tried getting the grill off but i think it's stuck on? he claimed these speakers were 1967. were the grills glued on or something? i don't want to break anything tonight.

i did try using a piece of cardboard to seperate the tweeter and mid range horn. i did hear seperation.

as for network components being broke, i wouldnt know how to test for that..

i'm guessing the caps are outdated and need changing. if i have this done i may as well go with DIY ALKs, since they're all the rave.

it's just kind of depressing to have to do a bunch of upgrades/mods to get your speakers sounding like what they're supposed to. i got my hopes up and expected to be blown away as soon as hooking them up.

  5. AL networks

woofer upgraded to a university (unsure of the model)

    coming from rf-3ii's

now, before i start whining, i want to let you all know that i have two major things working against me.

    a) source = PC

    B) room = 11x11

    ---------

now, i had high expectations for the speakers, i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong, or if roomsize/source is really choking these suckers, but i'm not too impressed. as for those saying the high end is "hot" i have to disagree. i found my rf-3's to sound brighter? perhaps it's the different type of bass that the scalas produce that make it seem that way.

anyhow, i don't notice that much of an improvement to warrent these big suckers and the cash spent for them. they'd be worth it if i didnt have rf-3ii's prior to this, but as it stands, i'm dissapointed.

perhaps i'm using the wrong taps on my amplifier? i have 4,8,16 ohm on my mc250. i'm using 4 ohm tap. maybe i need to upgrade to 12 guage speaker wire over my 14 guage. maybe they're out of phase? (i put red wire with red and black with black.) i'll try switching the phase tomorrow.

oh well.. they're great speakers, i just don't think they're what everyone makes them out to be. i havent listened at high music levels as it's 11:00pm in nyc. i'll screw around ("toe them in," try diff taps, diff music, etc..) with them some more tomorrow. it's hot and im tired from lifting these suckers.

overall, they're good speakers, just weren't worth the upgrade from what i had in my opinion.

Ship To: BROOKLYN, NY 11211 USA

Status: IS NOW ON HAND AT BROOKLYN, NY

THE SHIPMENT IS LOADING FOR DELIVERY ON TRAILER NUMBER C187 235039

TO BE DELIVERED BY TERMINAL 187 IN BROOKLYN, NY

    -----

now the roadway closest to me is the in brooklyn. it was the one i requested the shipper have it sent to.

the shipper and i discussed how this package would be sent. we agree'd that i'd pick them up at the depot because it'd be cheaper that way instead of having them deliver to my door.

according to this tracking info, the package is already at my selected depot, but is loading on a trailor to be delivered somewhere else? (perhaps my house)...

and if it's true that it is in brooklyn, howcome the delivery date is still estimated to be the 8th

    thanks

  7. i'll take your word for it. i suppose i can purchase this $25 chaintech card to tide me over until i'm ready to purchase an external dac. i read it has decent analog output as well. i just hope it has x64 driver support! does the spdif have bit perfect output giving higher end cards really no advantage in my situation? also (i know i can look this up in a few minutes, but i may as well ask) does it natively support 44.1khz or does it upsample to 48khz through the drivers

this onboard sound i'm using now is really terrible.

Unfortunately you won't get any reasonably high quality output from a sound card, whose analog output stage is buried in interference from the PC switching power supply.

I suggest getting a less expensive high quality sound card like the Chaintec AV-710 and running an optical cable into an outboard DAC.

You can get an MSB Link III for $200-250 from Audiogon, and the Chaintech for $25. Trust me (I've thoroughly examined these options), what I suggest is a far better investment.

    ----------------

    ah, you're killing my wallet!

so will this $300 (leaving some $ buffer) investment really be worth it over using an internal soundcard? i suppose i can hold off and look into this if it's that much of a difference. is the main difference interference and "noise?"

  9. well thanks for the help. i think i'll take my chances with the internal card even though i like the physical volume adjustments on the external ones (i dont have a preamp). the external ones start becoming pricey and i'd feel bad spending over $200 on one when that can go toward a turntable or tube preamp, both of which i am in need of.

Aiee..maybe I should just get some Heresys for rears instead, they're always around. I dunno.

i say go with what you originally wanted. you may be happy with the heresys for a while, but if you originally wanted the scalas, you know you're not going to be able to resist buying them sometime in the (near) future.

  11. thanks for the information guys. you really cleared things up for me.

i was looking at this e-mu 0404 as well. its playback performance seems to be on par or (wishful thinking) maybe even better than the audiophile 192. it's also $50 cheaper because its recording section is rather "lacking." it uses unbalanced inputs so i wouldn't need to worry about impedence compatibility that dr.who mentioned.

as for the external soundcards, do you have any in mind? recording really is not a priority for me, and if i can get the best possible playback from my computer it'd be great. i'm going to be using la scalas as my pc speakers, so i'm sure those will pick up noise quite easily.

    thanks again.

edit: nevermind on the e-mu. i'll stick with my original choice. the audiophile 192. after reading up on the head-fi forums they claim the 0404 is plastic and forward sounding. that would probably mix quite terribly with la scalas. they described the 192 as smooth and warm.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate your help. I'm really looking for a pair of Cornwalls but the NY/NJ area doesn't seem to have alot of Heritage sales!

    ----------------

tell me about it. i live in nyc as well. i've been searching for la scalas for months. i finally scored a pair of '67s on audiogon for $1.1k shipped. the seller said he upgraded the woofers to universities which was an improvement in sound according to him. i took his word since he seemed to have dealt with many speaker sales. i'm anxious to see how they sound. i've never heard a heritage speaker before, and coming from rf-3's this should be (hopefully) quite a drastic improvement. waiting for them to ship is a killer!

  13. that guy has been trying to sell those for a really long time on craigslist. there was a reason no one bought them. i offered the guy a generous(considering the woofers and cabinet condition) $500 for thsoe speakers, he should've took it.

he also fails to mention that theres holes in the cabinets

edit: he wouldnt tell me what woofer he used when i asked. he said he didnt want to open up the cabinet

  14. for the time being i've been using 3.5mm to rca connectors to get this to work with my santa cruz soundcard. now that i've upgraded to winxp x64, my soundcard is no longer and will no longer be supported. there is far too much noise with my onboard sound, and there arent even official drivers out for it yet.

that leaves me with one option. UPDGRADE!

now, i've been looking at this audiophile 192 from m-audio. according to word of mouth, it seems to be a very good soundcard. the problem is, i'm unsure what kind of connection converters i'd need. here is a link for reference (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192-main.html).

it doesnt seem to have the normal 3.5mm or rca outputs that i'd use. i'm not sure why it has three red and three white connectors (excuse my lack of vocabulary) as it seems to be only a two channel card (correct me if i'm wrong). i don't have any fancy digital inputs on my amp, as it's rather old (mcintosh mc250).

what i need is for someone to name the kind of wire converter i'd need to connect this soundcard to my amp. or perhaps name a soundcard that would be more suited for my needs if you feel so inclined.

i'm not worried about gaming dsp effects such as eax and all of that. i just want pure two channel for listening to media and watching the occasional movie. although i wouldn't mind a multichannel soundcard to use with my digital crossover plugin with foobar2000, but i haven't found any "professional" quality ones that were in a sane pricerange.

    thanks guys.
