  1. Spencer Davis Group - 8 Gigs A Week - IMPORT Street Date - Mar 18, 1996 EIGHT GIGS A WEEK is a two-disc, 51-track anthology of live recordings and demos by the 1964-'66 lineup of British blues-rockers the Spencer Davis Group, featuring singer and organist Steve Winwood. Subtitled 'The Steve Winwood Years' this 51 track opus is a real treat for fans and interested parties alike. A very young Winwood cut his chops on many standards in this period as well as original material. Reportedly, most of the tracks recorded in this era were first takes or 'live in the studio'. This group is held as the best R&B group that ever was by many in the UK and Europe and this stellar compilation captures their very essence. In their heyday, the group consisted of Steve Winwood on vocals; Steve's brother Muff Winwood played bass; Pete York handled the drums; plus founder, lead guitarist and co-singer, Spencer Davis. Their main producer was the late Jimmy Miller. 1. Dimples 2. I Can't Stand It 3. Jump Back 4. Here Right Now 5. Searchin 6. Midnight Train 7. It's Gonna Work Out Fine 8. My Babe 9. Kansas City 10. 2. Free Flight - Palomino Duck New Age Audio CD (April 2, 1996) Original Release Date: March 26, 1996 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003JV4/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/102-7525570-6897720?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=5174 01 Free Flight...The Journey North 02 Eastern Wind 03 Remember 04 On the Isle of Skye 05 Sweetwater 06 Nightshade 07 Liquidity 08 When Love Comes 09 Light into Blue 10 Freedom 11 Love Will Conquer All 12 As Seasons Change Last week I had never heard of this group. One of the guy's at work bought a lot of CD's off of EBAY and this was in the stack he called junk... you know... "hey if you want any of these help yourself" type stack. Well I picked this CD out of the pile and I must say it is one great CD. I think the term used in one of the reviews "absolutly beautifull music" really fits this music. If you like the sound of CUSCO you will love this CD. Rare find but a real keeper! The Amazon link above includes sample clips which should give you some idea of the type of music that Palomino Duck plays... Greg's pick: Free Flight...The Journey North

Biography An excellent tenor saxophonist and the son of Von Freeman, Chico Freeman has had a busy and diverse career, with many recordings ranging from advanced hard bop to nearly free avant-garde jazz. He originally played trumpet, not taking up the tenor until he was a junior in college. Freeman graduated from Northwestern University in 1972, played with R&B groups, and joined the AACM. In 1977, he moved to New York, where he worked with Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Sam Rivers' big band, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, and Don Pullen, in addition to leading his own groups. He recorded a dozen albums as a leader during 1975-1982. Starting in 1984, Freeman has played on a part-time basis with the Leaders, he has recorded on a few occasions with his father and in 1989, he put together an electric band called Brainstorm. Chico Freeman has recorded through the years as a leader for Dharma, India Navigation, Contemporary, Black Saint, Elektra/Musician, Black Hawk, Palo Alto, Jazz House, and In & Out. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
  4. Members Weekly Music Recommendations-August 7 Thebes is on hiatus from the forum today! Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) So what do you have to share this week? With four full CD's we are talking about a lot of great ZZ TOP music here to enjoy! Greg's pick: Manic Mechanic Here is what the official ZZ TOP website has to say about this collection: http://www.zztop.com CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ: THE ZZ TOP BOX, the most comprehensive collection of ZZ TOP music ever assembled. This explosive four-disc collection celebrates the 30-plus-year career of the legendary Texas trio guitarist Billy F Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard by serving up 80 of their hottest hits, album tracks and some sizzling rare cuts. An extensive research effort has yielded the original, first-generation analog masters that are the source of the tracks included in CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ: THE ZZ TOP BOX. The collection reaches back to the earliest recordings of the band, including their breakthrough hits "La Grange" and "Tush," and chronicles ZZ TOP's rise to the top of rock's pantheon through outstanding tracks from ZZ TOP's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello, El Loco, and their RIAA diamond-certified (more than 10 million sold, and a Billboard album chart component for 183 weeks) Eliminator and multi-platinum Afterburner. The ZZ TOP catalog is one of rock's most enduring bodies of work thanks to continuing radio airplay for key tracks and the fact that the band highlights the breadth of its repertoire in live performances. CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ: THE ZZ TOP BOX includes tracks from 1968's Flash (the debut album from Gibbons' first band, The Moving Sidewalks) and the first release issued under the ZZ TOP name: "Salt Lick" b/w "Miller's Farm." All of the band's best- known tracks (such as "Gimme All Your Lovin" "Sharp Dressed Man," "Legs" and "Rough Boy") are included, plus a plethora of meaty musical surprises. Among the rare items found on CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ is a live rendition of the 1980 hit "Cheap Sunglasses," a Spanish-language version of 1972's "Francene," a dance mix of the 1984 Top 10 single "Legs," as well as remixes of "Velcro Fly" (1986), "Give It Up" (1991) and "Viva Las Vegas" (1992). The set is complemented by a track-by-track breakdown in which the band reviews their finest musical moments. Also included are tributes from Kid Rock, Farrah Fawcett, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Bob Thornton and former Texas Governor Ann Richards as well as rare photographs that underscore the band's sense of fun and funk. Since its formation in 1969, ZZ TOP has been recognized as a group with world-class status and as the most iconic American band of all time and, to many around the world, a living symbol of Texas music. Consistency is a hallmark of ZZ TOP with the Gibbons-Hill-Beard troika unchanged since the band's founding almost 35 years ago still going strong today. ZZ TOP have carved a sizeable niche for themselves in popular American culture with their hell-raisin' blues rock and instantly recognizable chest-length beards. Their droll sense of absurdist humor has added to the band's cache over the years. Drawing from R&B, blues, country, boogie, and even hip-hop, the trio has forged a style and sound as big and as badass as their home state. Beyond the successes of their albums, singles and tours, they have been named Official Heroes of The State of Texas and have been the subject of numerous references in films, TV, cartoons, political campaigns and the popular vernacular in general. CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ: THE ZZ TOP BOX documents the basis for ZZ TOP's almost mythic status: their singular music approach, enigmatic lyrics and larger-than-life personae. Packaged to go.
  5. Thanks thebes! You know I have to post something good this week now! Alan Parsons Project - I Robot # Audio CD (October 25, 1990) # Original Release Date: June 1, 1977 01 I Robot 02 I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You 03 Some Other Time 04 Breakdown 05 Don't Let It Show 06 The Voice 07 Nucleus 08 Day After Day (The Show Must Go On) 09 Total Eclipse 10 Genesis Ch. 1 V. 32 Greg's pick: Track #4 - Breakdown The 1977 album I Robot, by The Alan Parsons Project, was inspired by Asimov's I, Robot. I Robot is a must have CD pick. http://www.alanparsonsmusic.com/home.html http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/parsons_alan_project/bio.jhtml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alan_Parsons_Project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Robot The first recording under the Arista aegis, I Robot (Arista AL 7002), integrated the concepts of robotics and the souls of machines into a concept album. I Robot became a Top 10 album smash, earning platinum certification by the RIAA for selling over one million copies. The album also spawned another U.S. Top 40 hit, "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" (Arista AS 0260), and helped reinforce the Alan Parsons Project as one of the top bands in the art-rock genre. "We did intend at one stage that I Robot would be in fact related to the Isaac Asimov work," said Woolfson. "I had the honor of speaking with Asimov, and it emerged during that conversation that he had many years before granted all sorts of rights to some other company, who had never did anything with it, but nevertheless he was precluded from licensing to us to tie into his stories. So we had to slightly alter the grammar of the I Robot cover - ours didn't have a comma in the title, as his book title did - even though he borrowed his title from the book I, Claudius. The album ended up as being something not directly related to Asimov, but related instead to the concept of the power of robotics." Many however know of the work Parsons did with the Pink Floyd masterpiece the Dark Side of the Moon. Parsons is even amused by the reports of fans merging the music of Dark Side of the Moon to the motion picture The Wizard of Oz. "I always correct them," laughed Parsons, "it wasn't The Wizard of Oz, our source material was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
  6. Well we got some new music in the mail this week. New Age, DVD/CD - "The Magical Journeys of Andreas Vollenweider" Andreas Vollenweider the Swiss harpist has been one artist I have followed since his first CD hit the market many years ago. The new DVD/CD "The Magical Journeys of Andreas Vollenweider" is fantastic! While the CD has 18 great selections it just can not compare to the nearly four hours of content on the DVD. One thing I really like about the DVD is we get a chance to see who Andreas Vollenweider is. We learn a lot about his life and family. This is not your everyday artist. When you see him play before the Dalai Lama you will know how good an artist he really is. You will awe at the sound coming from the harp just as the Dalai Lama did. If you are not familiar with the works of Andreas Vollenweider then go to the official site and sample his music. http://www.vollenweider.com/ DVD! The Magical Journeys of Andreas Vollenweider now available in the US ( Released: Apr 4, 2006 ) international release Sept06 25 years live! Almost 4 hours of live concerts, interviews, documetaries, music videos... For this DVD, AVAF went through their archives and assembled almost four hours of film footage. What came out is a musical travelogue, filmed around the world, featuring the artist and his band, the "Friends" as well as renowned guest stars including Carly Simon, Adullah Ibrahim, David Lindley, Carlos Nunez, Djivan Gasparian and many others. The program consists of concerts filmed in exotic and interesting locales through out Europe, America and Asia including a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, performances at the historic Rockaplast-Festival in Germany, the Tokyos NHK Hall, the town square of Zurich Switzerland (where Andreas performed for H.H. the Dalai Lama at his 70th birthday celebration) and several full orchestral performances and studio footage never seen before. 1. "The Magical Journeys", one hour PBS program on AVAFs 25 year concert history, from the early years to the most recent tours, incl. the symphonic works live and AVs personal comments 2. Concert Specials: - Down to the Moon in Tokyo (1987) - Tales of Kira Kutan (Poland, Symphonic, 2002), - Wolkenstein (Switzerland, symphonic, 1999), - COSMOPOLY project (Basle, Switzerland, 2001) 3. Documentaries on Book of Roses, Kryptos, COSMOPOLY project and the most recent album VOX 4. The Music Videos: "Pearls & Tears", "Dancing with the Lion" and the pioneer shortfilm "Pace Verde" Guests including Carly Simon, Milton Nascimento, David Lindley, Bobby McFerrin and many others demonstrating the universality of music and it's ability to appeal and unite across cultures and languages. Although Andreas Vollenweider's music has always been synonymous with the new age music genre, the Swiss harpist quickly transcended the genres record sales when White Winds (1983) and his global breakthrough, the Grammy winning 1986 album Down To The Moon became a crossover sensation on Billboard's pop, jazz and classical charts simultaneously. More than simply creating music that exuded tranquility, he was also responsible for producing a signature sound that has reached worldwide cult status. His 25 years of almost constant touring have left him legions of fans the world over spanning generations and cultures. Concert programs filmed in exotic and interesting locales in Europe, America and Asia are featured in the program along with behind-the-scenes footage from many of the shows. These performances include Andreas' breakthrough performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, performances at the Rockplast-Festival of Pop music in Berlin, studio footage featuring guest artists (Carly Simon, David Lindley, Abdullah Ibrahim Bobby McFerrin, Abdullah Ibrahim, Djivan Gasparyan, Carlos Nunez, Milton Nascimento, Ray Anderson ), his first performance at Tokyo's NHK Hall, his recent outdoor concert before 10,000 in the town square of Zurich, Switzerland where Andreas performed for the 70th birthday celebration of the Dali Lama, several full orchestral performances including one with the Sinfonia Varsovia (Yehudi Mneuin's acclaimed ensemble), and many other performances at locations through out Europe and Asia. http://www.vollenweider.com/ CD! - Magical Journeys of Andreas Vollenweider Released: Apr 4, 2006 01 Stella 02 Down to the Moon 03 Moonday 04 Pace Verde 05 The Woman & The Stone 06 Passionata 07 Under One Moon 08 Hush, My Heart Be Still 09 Night Fire Dance 10 Die Vogelpredigt 11 Micro-Macro 12 Under One Moon 13 Pearls & Tears 14 Princess Kira 15 The Play of the Five Balls 16 Seven Doors 17 Het You! Yes You 18 Pyramid Andreas Vollenweider was one of the few musicians to gain superstar status as a "new age artist" back when the term was first used as a marketing category in the mid-'80s. The Swiss harpist, however, quickly transcended the need for alternative record sales when his albums simultaneously broached Billboard's pop, jazz, and classical charts in 1986. Born in Zurich in 1953, Vollenweider was ensconced in the city's fine art scene, courtesy of his father, one of Europe's leading organists. After becoming proficient on guitar, flute, and other instruments, the young Vollenweider developed a passion for the harp, which he modified to suit his needs. Not only did he construct a damper to expedite more rhythmic playing, he broadened the harp's tonal range by electrifying it. His buoyant funk beats, exotic pan-cultural influences, and colorful harp improvisations began to sweep Europe in the early '80s as Vollenweider signed with CBS Records to release Behind the Gardens...Behind the Wall. Three albums later, he won his first Grammy for 1987's Down to the Moon. Over the years, Vollenweider has managed to maintain his artistic integrity and vision despite increasing commercial success. The harpist's 1991 album Book of Roses is a testament to his ability to expand his scope as a composer while keeping his trademark sound intact; after a lenghty hiatus, he issued Kryptos in 1998, followed two years later by Cosmopoly. ~ Linda Kohanov, All Music Guide
  7. This week let's go back in time with the early Moody Blues. The chart hit song Stop! was released in 1966 and although not of the style the Moody Blues is now known for the song is still great to listen to. 8. Blues it is then. How about the late great Albert King! Albert King - King of the Blues Guitar Audio CD Street Date: August 18, 1989 01 - Laundromat Blues 02 - Overall Junction 03 - Oh, Pretty Woman 04 - Funk-Shun 05 - Crosscut Saw 06 - Down Don't Bother Me 07 - Born Under A Bad Sign 08 - Personal Manager 09 - Kansas City 10 - The Very Thought Of You 11 - The Hunter 12 - I Almost Lost My Mind 13 - As The Years Go Passing By 14 - Cold Feet 15 - You Sure Druve A Hard Bargain 16 - I Love Lucy 17 - You're Gonna Need Me Greg's Pick: Oh, Pretty Woman I love great blues and who could not love the blues of the Hall of Fame performer Albert King! This is the way Blues is meant to be played. http://www.cascadeblues.org/History/AlbertKing.htm King was a large man, standing 6-foot-4-inches and weighing well over 250 pounds. A natural left-hander, King taught himself to play the guitar upside-down while keeping the strings strung for a right-handed player and playing with his thumb as opposed to a pick. He was a moody man and known to carry a .45 in the band of his pants. He also disliked performing live with musicians he felt were his superiors, wanting the sole command of the stage just for himself. King played his final concert in Los Angeles on December 19, 1992. He died two days later at home in Memphis after suffering a sudden heart attack. After his funeral, a procession was led down Beale Street in a true New Orleans-style Jazz tradition, as the hearse bearing King's body was led by the Memphis Horns playing "When The Saints Go Marching In". King was laid to rest across the Mississippi River in the Paradise Gardens Cemetery in Edmondson, Arkansas, not far from where he spent his childhood. Albert King has been honored by The Blues Foundation with his induction into their Hall of Fame. Both "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "Live Wire / Blues Power" are also honored as Classics of Blues Recordings. But, the real honor for King is the love and everlasting respect that so many of his peers have given him. Stevie Ray Vaughan would call him "Daddy" and John Lee Hooker named him as one of his all-time favorite guitarists. Michael Bloomfield once said, "Albert can take four notes and write a volume. He can say more with fewer notes than anyone I've ever known." B.B. King stated in his autobiography "He wasn't my brother in blood, but he sure was my brother in Blues." Albert King's legend will live on. Every time a Blues or Rock combo is on stage, in an arena or small nightclub, or just playing in their garage and grinds into "Born Under A Bad Sign" or "Crosscut Saw", his influence will be shining true.
  9. Well I have a few more CD's coming in this week and have I got a classic for you. I remember playing this one when I was in my youth and it is the best blues album I have ever heard. I have not thought about the LP for years until I ran across it a few days ago. Still I remember every song on this masterpiece. The CD should be here in the next few days! Super Session [EXTRA TRACKS] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] Bloomfield, Mike / Kooper, Al / Stills, Steve Audio CD Street Date: Apr 08, 2003 Original LP release Date: 1968 01 - Albert's Shuffle 02 - Stop 03 - Man's Temptation 04 - His Holy Modal Majesty 05 - Really 06 - It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry 07 - Season Of The Witch 08 - You Don't Love Me 09 - Harvey's Tune 10 - Albert's Shuffle - (mix without horns, previously unreleased) 11 - Season Of The Witch - (mix without horns, previously unreleased) 12 - Blues For Nothing - (studio outtake) 13 - Fat Grey Cloud - (previously unreleased, live) One of the best blues albums ever--a classic. Greg's pick: Track #7 - Season Of The Witch http://www.mikebloomfield.com/supersession2003.htm THE IDEA WAS SIMPLE: Two out-of-work rock-star pals pull into a studio, jam on some blues changes and put out a record. Guitarist Mike Bloomfield, late of the Butterfield Blues Band, had just quit his psychedelic-R&B project, the Electric Flag; singer-organist Al Kooper was fresh out of Blood, Sweat and Tears. And the two had already played together on Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. The empathy was up and running immediately. In one nine-hour session, Bloomfield and Kooper, with pianist Barry Goldberg, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Eddie Hoh, cut enough music for one whole side of an LP: two long, sweet blues, a raga-jazz trip and covers of Curtis Mayfield's "Man's Temptation" and the 1968 Howard Tate single "Stop." Bloomfield didn't play another note on the record. A chronic insomniac sinking into long-term heroin addiction, he abruptly split for home the next day, leaving Kooper to finish Super Session with a hastily recruited Steve Stills. But what Bloomfield left behind is still the best half an album in late-Sixties rock: five performances comprising the single finest document of Bloomfield's rare gifts as a guitarist, the visceral swing and clarity of attack that were heard less and less on record in the decade leading to his death from a drug overdose in 1981. The most amazing thing about Bloomfield's playing on Super Session is its absolute joy. With Butterfield, he often sounded like an impatient purist, pressing against blues convention with a fitful mix of apostolic propriety and caged-animal violence. But in "Really" and "Stop," there is a wide-open cheer and confidence in Bloomfield's tone -- a clean, sharp peal descended from the treble-y stab of three Kings (B.B., Albert and Freddie) -- and his meaty glide from note to note. Bloomfield's opening and closing solos in "Albert's Shuffle" are stunning displays of grip and virtuosity, of his ability to fire dense knots of melody with dead aim. And in "His Holy Modal Majesty," Bloomfield's Indo-Coltrane maneuvers combine free-jazz aggression with the concentrated solemnity of prayer. The Stills numbers are pretty fine, too: The mod-cowboy jangle he drapes over Dylan's "It Takes Alot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry," the sexy dread of his wah-wah yelps in "Season Of The Witch." And Kooper is a classy ringmaster, gluing the record together with strong, straight singing and classy, unobtrusive horn overdubs. But Bloomfield -- then at the height of his powers -- is the reason Super Session deserves its name. After it hit the Top Twenty in late '68, packs of lazy rock stars in search of easy coin tried peddling hours of dire studio noodling as "super sessions." But there was only one true Super Session. This is it. --David Fricke

He is remembered particularly for being a composer of film and television scores, and won a record number of Grammy awards (including a "Lifetime Achievement" award in 1995). He was born Enrico Nicola Mancini in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. Although he was drafted into the Army during World War Two, Mancini was able to get a transfer from the infantry to the band. The compositions for which he is best known include "Moon River" (the theme song from the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's), and the theme music for the 1963 films The Pink Panther and Charade. Interestingly, he also wrote a score for the Alfred Hitchcock film Frenzy (1972) that was ultimately rejected. He is often credited with composing the music for the Peanuts movies, the well-known theme Linus and Lucy in particular. However, these songs were composed and performed by another esteemed jazz pianist, Vince Guaraldi. Although much of Mancini's work can be classified as easy listening, he was capable of writing powerful and rousing scores such as that for Lifeforce. Two of his earliest scores were for the TV shows, Peter Gunn (1958) and Mr. Lucky (1959). A notable addition later in his career was the theme song to the sitcom Newhart (1982), as well as the music to the 1986 Disney blockbuster The Great Mouse Detective. He died at age 70 in Beverly Hills, California of pancreatic cancer.
  12. Update!! Last week I posted one new DVD and CD just released by Herb Alpert that I had just ordered. Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 (2006) (DVD) Street Date: Apr 04, 2006 Whipped Cream & Other Delights Re Whipped CD - Herb Alpert Street Date: Mar 07, 2006 Well both of these items arrived a few days ago and I have been playing both of them like crazy. The DVD is one great concert. Herb Alpert's performance in 1996 shows he still has great talent. The Re-Whipped CD is just fantastic! Ripped that bad boy to my computer and put it on my Zen. My wife went to her mom's this weekend and took the Herb Alpert CD to play in the car. The trip to her mom's is about eight hours. She called me on her way there and said she loved the Re-Whipped CD... especially track #8 - El Garbanzo!!!! With so little from Herb Alpert for such a long period of time I am really glad to have fresh new sounds from one of the greatest horn players of all time. So yes, the DVD and CD are great and I highly recommend them both!
  13. Well I picked this one up at Walmart a few days ago. Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble Live At Montreux 1982 & 1985 - DVD This is the Sony info on the release. FIRST TIME ON DVD! Over 2 hours of content Includes a brand new documentary By the summer of 1982, Stevie Ray Vaughan was already a veteran of the Southern blues circuit. Desperately searching for his big break, he was asked to play "Blues Night" at the annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. Playing like his life depended on it, Stevie put on a fiery performance - full of future SRV classics like "Pride And Joy" and "Love Struck Baby." The audience could not have cared less. Every song Stevie played was greeted by an increasing wave of boos and hisses and he left the stage bewildered and heart-broken. As fate would have it, this would be the most important single show Stevie ever played. In attendance at the festival were two figures who would prove instrumental in Stevie's subsequent rise to stardom: David Bowie and Jackson Browne. They immediately recognized Stevie's raw talent and limitless passion. As a result, Jackson Browne offered Stevie the opportunity to record (free of charge) at his own studio--the tapes that would be Texas Flood--Stevie's first studio album for Epic Records. In addition, Stevie was asked to play on Bowie's hugely successful Let's Dance album and tour. Three years later, when Stevie was invited back to headline "Blues Night" at the festival, the crowd, now familiar with Stevie's songs and albums treated him like the conquering hero. And Stevie again played like his life depended on it - because, as we all came to recognize and respect, that was the only way he knew how. TRACK LISTING DISC ONE - July 17, 1982 "Hide Away" "Rude Mood" "Pride And Joy" "Texas Flood" "Love Struck Baby" "Dirty Pool" "Give Me Back My Wig" "Collins' Shuffle" DISC TWO - July 15, 1985 "Scuttle Buttin'" "Say What!" "Ain't Gone N' Give Up On Love" "Pride And Joy" "Mary Had A Little Lamb" "Cold Shot"* (with Johnny Copeland) "Tin Pan Alley (aka Roughest Place In Town)" (with Johnny Copeland) "Look At Little Sister"* (with Johnny Copeland) "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" "Texas Flood" "Life Without You" "Gone Home" "Couldn't Stand The Weather" *PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED DVD-ONLY BONUS TRACK Greg's comments: Both of these concerts are great. Sound quality is outstanding with full 5.1 support and the performance is what makes this DVD a must have buy! Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of those rare artists who perform much better live then in the studio. Greg's pick: "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"
  14. One of my all time favorite horn players is back! Last year some great re-masters of some of the best Herb Alpert music was released. Well in the last few weeks we have even more goodies!!! On April 4, 2006 the Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 DVD was released. Then on March 7, 2006 Herb Alpert released "Whipped Cream & Other Delights Re Whipped". This is not the same as the original work that Herb Alpert did. Some of the samples are in the links provided below and they sound good. While I still love the original classic "Whipped Cream" this one is a must have CD as well! I ordered both items tonight and should have more to say in a few days when the items arrive. But for now the samples say Herb is still around and doing fine! He is also a successful businessman, having founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss and later, Almo Sounds. On top of this, he has exhibited as an artist, produced shows on Broadway and established the Herb Alpert Foundation for arts education. This 1996 performance at the Montreux Festival features Herb Alpert together with the Jeff Lorber Band in a sparkling performance of Alpert's biggest hits. DVD highlights include performances of "Spanish Flea," "This Guy's in Love with You," "Rise," and many more. This is Herb Alpert's first appearance on DVD and if you are a fan, you'll definitely want to add it to your collection! If you haven't heard Herb's music before, then give this a try. Herb has never sounded better and teaming with Jeff Lorber's band was a great choice. He is the "A" of A&M Records and truly a legend in American music. Herb Alpert still plays great trumpet! He lays down new trumpet melodies and counterpoint on these re-mixed tracks from the original "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" album. It sounds to me like Herb's Tijuana Brass meets Herb's jazzy solo sound. If you are a Herb Alpert fan, you won't want to miss this new CD! By the way, there is a new hot looking babe in a lather of cream on the cover. Submitted by s.sidoruk in Cheshire, CT USA

Alcatraz 10. Bodensee 11. Aurora 12. Chorus The album is dedicated to major water bodies of the world, lakes, seas and hills. The mesmerizing music with a touch of traditional music of its location made it an extremely popular release. Cusco is a German New Age band named after the Peruvian city of Cusco. Their songs contain influences from music found around the world. It comprises Michael Holm and Kristian Schultz. Michael Holm had long been fascinated with Cusco, the ancient region of Peru. Being a musician he wanted to show his fascination in the form of a musical tribute to the ancient world of Cusco. He met Kristian Schultz in 1978 and found out that they shared same musical and historical tastes. In 1979, Cusco the band was formed and they soon signed with Higher Octave, a German label. Note: The song Java from this CD was used as one of our selected Wedding songs. Another CD we have enjoyed for many years!
  18. Rammstein - Sehnsucht (Import CD - Germany) CD Release: 1998 01 - Sehnsucht 02 - Engel 03 - Tier 04 - Bestrafe Mich 05 - Du Hast 06 - Bück Dich 07 - Spiel Mit Mir 08 - Klavier 09 - Alter Mann 10 - Eifersucht 11 - Küss Mich (Fellfrosch) "Du Hast" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. First introduced to the public in the soundtrack to David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY, Rammstein produces a unique brand of menacing Teutonic rock, reconciling forebears (and admitted influence) Kraftwerk with the sonic assault of Nine Inch Nails. SEHNSUCHT manages to come on strong enough to get the Germans to forget about David Hasselhoff--at least for a while. As the eerie Arabic sample which introduces the opening title track dissolves into a crushing electric guitar attack, the listener descends into the dark sonic dungeon that is Rammstein. Vocalist Till Lindemann growls atop the group's twin guitar force, intoning the band's strangely romantic lyrics with snarling menace; the result is brutal drama of the highest order. From the exotic sonic experimentation of "Tier" to the tight crunch of "Buck Dich," SEHNSUCHT is a heavy, scary thrill ride, pausing for breath only with the comically soft "Klavier." 1997 album from the controversial German shock rock act, featuring the hit European singles 'Du Hast' and 'Engel'.11 tracks total. A Motor label release. 'Sehnsucht' means'Longing' in English. 'Rammstein' translates into 'BatteringRam' in English. I ran across Rammstein's work when they did a cover of Kraftwerk's "Das Model". Being a Kraftwerk fan myself I gave Rammstein a spin. Rammstein is very heavy metal a choice I will not hold against them. I have come to enjoy Rammstein's music very much.

  23. Feeling a little classical tonight. So let's go for the world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Yo-Yo Ma has a discography of over 50 albums - which have won him 15 Grammy Awards. Yo-Yo Ma - Japanese Melodies Audio CD - Release Date: June 25, 1985 01 Matsushima-Ondo 02 Kojo-No-Tsuki 03 Zui-Zui-Zukkorobashi 04 Defune 05 Nara-Yama 06 Chin-Chin-Chidori 07 Sakura, Sakura 08 Oroku-Musume 09 Chugoku-Chiho-No-Komoriuta 10 Chiran-Bushi Sakura for example is one of the most beautiful and well-known of all Japanese melodies. The word "sakura" means "cherry blossom" and one of the most spectacular sights you will ever see anywhere in the world is the blossoming of the cherry trees in the springtime in Japan. It lasts only a few days and it ends as quickly as it begins. Perhaps that is why this melody is so sad. I picked up the Yo-Yo Ma - Japanese Melodies CD when it came out back in 1985. When I first played it I must say I did not care for it. But the second time I played it I liked it. Now after playing this CD over the years I must say I have come to love this work. This is music you must be in the mood to listen too. But if you are in the mood to allow yourself to flow into this work you will find it to be one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Greg's pick: Chiran-Bushi. The deep sounding cello with soft bells from on high make this selection simply incrediable. The official Yo-Yo Ma website http://www.yo-yoma.com/
