  1. last post on upgrade...with everything now polarity correct and with more than 100 hours of playing I can now say I am quite happy with the results...the mids and highs are clearer than before...bass now seems to extend a little lower and is less "one note" the sondstage seems to have expanded somewhat (this at first worried me since I was used to a tightly imaged area between the speakers...now the area has spread) and lastly, I seem to be more relaxed while listening...less strain...Overall I would say I have made the biggest improvement, to date, in the sound of my stereo through Al K's upgrade...two things remain to try, a SET tube rig and a sub-woofer (tweakers rule!) thanks all, tony

  2. klewless, I know that backing off the tweeter would, in effect, be changing the sound...but when I compared what was coming out of the tweeter after the mod with what came out before AND I compared the balance between low-mid-high with my other speakers, I came away convinced that the tweeter is running hot, hotter than with the original x-over and hotter than with my other speakers...also, I rather like the ability to adjust level for the squawker, it may not be puristic (a word?) but I get the sound I like...however the tweeter level on the ALK cannot be adjusted like the squawker in kind so...Al, another twist, an "L" pad or "T" pad, something that lets me goof around to my hearts content to get the balance the way I like it...I hope it is something I can do with my tremendously limited soldering ability! thanks all for the comments, tony

  3. al, hate to twist your arm but...no really, I thnk with a few dbs of tweeter padding I will be in audio nirvana, but your reservations make me pause, would the passive resistor cause some kind of sound change? if not then I would love to give it a try...where can I buy that item on line? thanks, tony

  4. Finally I have finished (or better said settled) on the setting up of my k-horns with the ALK upgrade x-over and I can now make the following comments about the results:

    1. the new x-overs are much clearer and sound more "direct" than the original AK-3 x-over...especially in the mids and highs...improved slam and pace (sorry for the mag speak)

    2. the bass is somewhat more extended and less bloated in mid-bass (this is one reason I felt a percieved loss in bass) I also feel the bass is less "one note" than before my upgrade...I like it!

    3. After much playing around I found my optimum setting for the squawker was 3-0 (the 5-2 was too forward) though I have a note on this issue: since the tweeter is not adjustable the right setting for the squawker seems 5-2 in relation to the tweeter BUT NOT in relation to the bass...when using my two other speaker sets for low-mid-high level referencing (a pair of RB-5´s and a pair of Magneplanar SMGc´s) the proper bass-mid relation means a 3-0 but this leaves the tweeter too high in level...so I have to see if I can pad down the tweeter a couple of DB (AL?)...

    3. MUCH BETTER in terms of the glare, smear, and straining I sometimes heard in the mids-highs before the ALK mod...I can listen much longer now without strain than before and I feel a real liquidity on the top end I did not have before...

Summary: Great upgrade! much bigger difference in the sound of my K-horns than any other tweak I have made to date...highly recommended...

Now, AL K. tell me how to pad down the tweeter a little and we are home free!

    Thanks all, Tony

  5. worst speakers...a pair of big (2.5w X 3.5h X 2d) infinity four-ways from the mid-seventies, no life what-so-ever, hard to listen to after only fifteen minutes...strangly enough I have a another pair of small infinity monitors (6" woofer, 1" foam dome tweeter) that I bought at the same time which still sound great!

  6. thanks for the nice comments, just thought that we should have a little "inmates systems" stuff going on...

steve p: system so far...Mac MA6400 Integrated amp, two mid-fi sony changers (500 disks in there!), a monster reference HTS3500 power conditioner, mid seventies SAE mark VIII fm tuner, and a technics M85 professional cassette deck (also, mid seventies...still running!)...on the way from england, an MSB link DACIII (to improve the cd sound)...

al k: the right one floats about 3 inches from back wall and 3 inches from glass sliding doors...ouch is right! but it mostly manifests as mid bass bloat and some volume loss...balance control and a touch of bass, I had an equalizer in there for a while, but found I really did not need it...I still love them!

drobo1: room too small? I know, but someday I will build a house around them, in the mean time, she stays...

randy: this is just the entertainment room, we sleep in the bamboo treehouse!...

everyone else should post thier systems!...these were .jpgs cut to size and then saved with lots of compression and smoothing most photos can get down to 20k ...this way...regards, tony

  7. very interesting klew' it would seem that the reason all the peaks disappeared during your partial loosening of the clamp was because the clamp then acted to dampen the resonance rather than stiffened the cabinet as it did when fully tightened (which apparently moved the resonant frequency up...makes sense)...this leads me to believe that the idea of some surface mounted dampening may be quite effective...the dynamat and metal, or something like that...

  8. les, you da´man!...I think the birch idea is great! but I was thinking of adding the metal+sorbothane inside...bob, why not inside? it seems to me the 1/8" (max) wouldn´t make any difference to interior volume AND you wouldn´t have to worry about cosmetics (though les has a great idea!)...what problem could I cause? I am still going to work out a few ideas and post the drawing for comment...regards, tony

  9. tonygeno you read my mind! I thought if I took bobs idea of metal+sorbothane+adhesive to the walls surface and then took a threaded metal bar and built a wedging system I could reinforce the walls AND dampen vibration of a higher frequency...I´m going to work out some diagrams this weekend...anyone want to see the results? regards, tony

  10. bob,

I wonder if you think the stiffness or the dampening approach is more valid? (especially considering I have k-horns, large expanses of wood walls!) I am not sure whther it might just be better to use some sorbothane sheeting (does this exist?) applied to the insides of the walls...or perhaps some additional wooden bracing...I am starting from the presumption that my feeling that the box is imparting some lind of bass overtone to the music and that this can be affected by reducing the drum effect of the bass enclosure...regards, tony

  11. I'm thinking this could also be valid for my k-horns..I have noticed that the bass box vibrates quite noticeably AND that the bass seems to have an overtone similar to my fist rapping the cabinet (I really do think I can hear a definite "note" to my rapping and that same "note" I can hear in much of my bass regardless of the music being played) anyone else feel the bass cabinet is coloring the bass? anyone have ideas on how to dampen the bass cabinet, or make it more rigid? this issue really rings true (forgive the pun) with me...regards, tony

  12. 400watss? too loud?...I have a 100 watt amp which gets to unlistenable territory with just 10 watts into my k-horns...your speakers are a little less sensitive but no matter,400 watts could be too much, you might hear hum from your components and certainly will only use the first 10% of the volume control...many people think an amp needs to be above one third power to give its best...others say less strain on the amp means less distortion...the only that is certain is that your speakers wil not use more than 10% of the power in your amp in the wildest possible scenario...which carver is it?

  13. Al, can you describe how you have imprved the trnasformer in your x-over...as I have mentioned in previous posts the Klipsch version seems poorly built...are you widning your own, buying from somehwre, etc...? thanks, tony

p.s. how much do I need to send for a deposit on your x-overs?, and remind me how much is the total cost, credit cards, or checks only?...(your prototypes are still available?)...remember I have 1994 k-horns...ak-3 x-overs...

  14. I am, by nature, impatient...I am dying to hear updates from the peolpe who bought Al´s new x-overs...please ensure that you all work hard, putting in some serious listening time over the coming weekend and please, please, please post something Monday! Some of us have real high hopes for the AL K tweak...the only problem is once we have the perfect K-horn what will we do with our free time? listen to music?....
