  1. The yamaha rxv-659 looks nice and is rated well. The main thing i'm concerned with is, will an AV receiver like this be better than the panasonic we have now for music. I would think so.
  2. Yeah, i don't mind if it's used if the person took care of it. I don't think my parents want to because they had a bad experience with a receiver that they bought off a shelf before. It would all depend who it's from but i think they want new.
  3. It's funny, my dad is looking at receivers already. So, here's the deal. He mainly listens to music. I would like for him to have an integrated amp for music and his panasonic for movies, because i know most av receivers aren't as good for music as they are HT. He doesn't want to connect wires to use whichever setup with two different amps, so he wants an av receiver to do both. Now, he wants phono input which is really hard to find it seems on lower budget receivers. The budget is around $500 or so. Some authorized online site i can get receivers for half price, so that bumps it up. I like what i hear from harman kardon, denon, and pioneer elite, and outlaw. The speakers are klipsch ksf 8.5, and ksf c5, and ksf s5. I know there are many threads about receivers but phono seams to be the key here.
  4. That's pretty nice. I'll post some pictures in another thread that i'll start about the finished setup for my dad's HT.
  5. Well, i fixed the problem. I was told about that magnet trick but i tried using that along with the steel fishing line, and i don't think it was strong enough. It was a wreath holder that you put on a metal door, which is strong, but not strong enough. I don't know what you would use to go through 1/2" drywall with plaster. However, luckily our extra room is behind that wall, so the only thing we could think of was cutting a small hole near the bottom of the wall. We put the fish line through the hole drilled in the wall where the speaker would be, then i could find it and i stuck it through the hole down through the floor, taped the wire to the line and pulled it up. It worked pretty slick. Being a carpenter, it won't be too much to fix those holes, plus they are covered up anyhow. We figured it was better to do that in that room than the living room. After that, it's a pretty clean installation.
  6. I am trying to fish speaker wire for the surrounds up the wall, and i can't get it. I only have a 3/8" hole in the drywall and through the subfloor, but i can't see the wire at all. I don't want to cut a big hole in the drywall but i'm afraid that is next. I am using a steel fishing line and i can't get it to go to either hole. I know it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but i don't know what to do. I don't know how people do this for a profession.
  7. Can you use pre/pro for heritage too? I know you probably can, but it just seems like a new speaker thing. I guess because the electronics are new.
  8. Yeah, i was thinking in the future to sell my nad t753 to my dad, then i would buy something to replace it. I think my dad could get by with a tad less expensive receiver, and then i wouldn't have to buy anything to replace it. Yeah, i definately want better speakers eventually. I'm wondering if heritage or rf-7 lineup would be the way to go. It was just a thought.
  9. I think he thinks it sounds good, but for me the bass is muddy. He might not think so though. His hearing is much less critical, but i want him to have what i would want, so we'll get there eventually. I know he can here differences because he could one time between rf-15's and rf-25's, so his ears are good, but he's just stubborn with setting them right, but i'm working on it.[] The receiver can't do justice alone with the fronts. So you have to rely on the sub, and that isn't good either. It's a pioneer sub that was part of a HTIB a few years ago. A receiver and sub will probably be soon. I would give him my rw-8 if i could afford a new one. He mainly listens to music though.
  10. Well, i rearranged the living room so the setup would be better. The room is 13x18 and the fronts were 6' apart with a distance of 15' to listening position, and the center was off center in between the fronts. Today, i made the fronts 11' apart, and the center is center. I just have to put the surrounds up on the wall yet. HT sounds awesome. Music isn't good for me though. He just needs a much better sub and receiver.
  11. Is it better to make a hole in the floor for each speaker i presume. It's an interior wall. Is a ball chain just a smaller chain with a metal ball on the end?
  12. I was reading a few other threads about emotiva, and that sure looks like a deal. I can't buy now, but i was just starting this for me and others to see when's the right time to buy pre/pro. The main thing is, how high do you have to go with speakers for it to be worth it as in rf-7 system or heritage. I mean, i have sf-1's, sc-1, and rs-25's, and rw-8, and i didn't know if it's worth going to pre/pro for them, although i do have a $1000 nad receiver right now, so i would think it doesn't matter. I just didn't know if there would be a big difference in sound.
  13. Thanks for the info. I mainly wonder how big of hole i need to cut in the drywall to fish the wire up through, and i don't even have a fish line.
  14. He'll be 53. His ears aren't as good as mine or should i say maybe that's because his ears have been trained to crappy Fisher speakers the past 15 years.[] He likes them though. He's heard mine so he knows the sound, but i know he didn't expect it. I'm sure he'll grow to love them more and more as the days go by. I think he still had hard feelings for seeing the fishers go even though i thought they sucked. He loves treble though, and it drives me crazy, he has the panasonic receiver set to +8 treble and +6 bass. I try to give my listening expertise advise to him, but you know, it doesn't work. I guess however he likes it set is up to him.
  15. I want to install klipsch ksf s5's on the rear wall. I read about the ideal setup is 2-3 ft above listening position, so i'll keep that in mind. My main concern is how big of hole to cut in the drywall. When i was working with a stereo installer he said something about using a box in the wall or boxing it out for rear surround. I am not sure what that meant, but i was hoping you would fill me in on how to get a nice clean installation at where the speakers hang. What wire gauge should i use for surrounds. Right now it's just cheap 18AWG for cheap speakers we had hooked up. I have them on speaker stands right now, where the other ones were, at ear level. I think it would be better to get them on the wall.
  16. I'll order another grill, i meant, but in the future it will become a rear center.
  17. Well, the first time there wasn't much harm done other than scuffed a little on one of the diagonal edges. The second time however, the bottom left corner got crunched just a little. Nothing terrible but enough to make you mad. It also scuff the grill cloth off in that corner, and one peg broke on the grill, so i'll order a new one tomorrow. Hopefully i'll get one under warranty. I did before when i bought sf-1's from display with broken pegs, so i'll see.
  18. Well, from my other post about buying a HT for my dad, i finally picked it up today. My mom and I got it for his birthday. It took a while to persuade my mom into buying used speakers, but i finally did it. Once she saw them she didn't think they were used anymore. They are flawless. Not a mark on them. He bought them, and used them for about a year and stored them away because of the wife. They look like they came right out of the box. He wanted 600 for the ksf 8.5, ksf c5, and ksf s5. I talked a little bit. Introduced him to tubes and my knowledge of klipsch here from the forums. I started low with $500, and it took a few minutes, and there was monster cable, factory made like on my speakers now, that he had for fronts and center, and for that and other monster xp cable, i gave him an extra $25. So $525 for everything. I would say that is a deal. I got it hooked for dad before he came home and he loves them. Now he just needs a better amp for music instead of that panasonic receiver. O, the spending has only begun. HAHA. They sound pretty sweet too. Now are house is klipschonized.
  19. Dire Straits Sultans of Swing is a no brainer. It's my first pick to test a system.
  20. Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate it. I did get behind my system today and tape all the wires to the back of audio rack and clothes chest, so hopefully it will be ok now. Mainly just the power cords are kind of dangling around on the ground, but everything else is tidied up better. I guess i could use that flexible plastic conduit to keep the power cables as one. It's a little better organized. Especially the center channel wire isn't dangling like it was. I would like to get it the wires real neat and organized but not sure how once they get to the floor other than flexible plastic, and i know you have to keep speaker wire and power cords separate. I'll have to try that double sided tape. I thought that would stick to the tv ,but i guess not.
  21. Since i moved my room around, the center is in front of a window and now i can't really put it on the wall anymore. My cats always get behind my electronics where all the wires are, and twice now somehow the center has been pulled right off the tv. I am not sure where to put it or what to do to make it safer. My tv is on top of a clothes chest and then the center. It was ok last time, hopefully the sound is still ok after this time. It's aesthetics are starting to get marked up a little. If anyone has any good answers, please help.
  22. It depends if it's down firing or not. If down firing then yes. If front firing, then not really.
  23. I am not going to say anything else other than the fact that i experienced relevant issues as the same as ben but i won't say what. I don't know what it matters but i guess to some it does. What happens, happens. I don't know what's wrong with voicing truth.
  24. NOS valves. Tube rebuilder. You'll find a lot about him on here. http://www.nosvalves.com/
  25. Well, the only telefunken's i had were 1 as a 12ax7, and a mismatch of jan phillips and GE, but now they are all EI 12ax7's. The 6u8's were telefunken, but i do believe the one was faulty because when i moved it to the other slot, the hum followed to the other channel. A hum, not a buzz. That buzz is always there. I still have one telefunken 6u8, and the one that was faulty is now a scott. Trust me i felt the same way, sometimes, ben. I didn't know what to believe at times, but i do know that the one telefunken was bad. I just had to think back about that one.
