  1. Thanks Buck. We did record a Stones compilation about a year ago. As you know "Exile" is Bluesboy's favorite r&r album of all times.

    We got the remnants of the tropical storm last night and it continues to rain this morning. I guess it may be a good day to stay inside and make another tape.

  2. No she is watching Tom Cruise in Minority Report in the bedroom. I'm the one having fun. Turned on the amps early to warm up and they are sounding just fine. We still need to do that study on warm up time for tubes and if it makes a difference or if its just the scotch kicking in. Don't worry the bottle of Absolut is still in the freezer. I'm working on the Dalmore Cigar Malt tonight.

  3. Hey Dee....thought you would be out back grilling. Sitting here with two fingers of scotch and my laptop waiting for the tropical storm to come up from florida to give us a much needed soaking. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Have a great weekend.

  4. Things have been kind of slow here on general questions so I thought I would take the opportunity to wish my reel to reel a hapy birthday. I found the original invoice while going through some old paperwork today. My beloved Teac 3300S is 34 years old today! A little background. I bought this deck new from one of the audio warehouses that sold items wholesale back in the old days. The only one I remember by name is Illinois Audio. I bought it because a friend of mine had one and it was a thing of beauty with those big ten inch reels spinning. Over the years I made a lot of tapes including live recordings at the historic Thalian Hall here in Wilmington. At some point the deck stopped working as it should and it was put into the attic.... the tape deck equivalent of the old folks home. Later I gave it to a friend who expressed some interest in bringing it back to life and it was forgotten. Years later I made the aquaintence of Bluesboy who had rediscovered analog and suggested I do the same. My first step was to buy back my reel to reel for 5 classical cds. I brought it back home and hooked it up to my Bose radio and found that it still worked and the tapes were okay as well. Next step was to get the Pioneer SX-1280 out of mothballs and hooked up the McIntosh ML-1C speakers.

    Now my system is completely changed except for the Teac. Quicksilver Horn Monos have replaced the Pioneer....now owned by Mowtnbkr. A Quicksilver preamp was added. Bluesboy built me some LS clones with Altec 902s and 511B horns and Al built some special crossovers. I found a completely reworked Denon DP-1250 turntable with an ADC tonearm on ebay and added a Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood cartridge. A second Teac was added..... an X-10 also from ebay. Both decks were sent to Florida for a complete going through by Kevin Kaas, a former troubleshooter for Dokorder. Later a modified Jolida tubed cd player was added. I also bought a very minty Harman Kardon tubed reciever from a seller on audiogon. The HK is waiting for a pair of single driver speakers that Bluesboy is building.

    Tonight I was listening to a reel compilation of Diana Krall and was awed by the sound quality that this little deck still produces. The cut "blvd of broken dreams" was breathtaking. 34 years old!!!! They just don't make things that way any more. Not Diana but my deck. Though Diana is very well built as well.

    So Tape deck......happy birthday. Thanks for all the good times....you have seen me through Jim Croce and Joan Baez to Miles, Sonny and Coltrane and 34 years of my life. You are home to stay.

    I hate to admit I have'nt gotten up to speed on downloading pics from camera to pc. I have never tried....so there are no pics on the pc to change my avatar. May put that on my list of things to learn. Sorry I can't help you with your error message.

    Cooked some of the worst hamburgers ever Monday. Wife gave me some very lean ground round from the freezer and it had no flavor at all. A waste of valdalia onions and dinosaur mutha sauce. This will go right up there with my shark fiasco. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

  6. Thanks for the kind words Phil. I wish we could have gotten together while you were here. Yesterday I was at Elijahs restaurant sitting outside by the water and had a great time as I mentioned in an earlier post. That would have been a great time to have met you and your family. Perhaps next time.

    Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Ft.Fisher are great areas to visit as is Wrightsville Beach (limited parking) the USS NC, and Wilmington's historic district. The Aquarium and the Ft. Fisher hermits old bunker/home are interesting as well.

    As for my pending retirement I have put that on hold.

  8. Had to leave the house since the housekeeper was here so I went to brunch at a restaurant on the Cape Fear River. Had a medium rare flat iron steak salad with bleu chese and cherry tomatoes on a bed of spinach and arugala. What timing.....a square rigged tall ship made its way up the river as the tourist snapped pictures. It was so pleasant on the river that I stuck around and had a stout beer and the wife a bloody mary. Saw an old veteran wearing a hat from a reunion on the USS North Carolina. Wondered to myself how many of the folks walking along the riverwalk were veterans and what stories they could tell.

    Okay....I know this is the bbq thread .....just wanted to say I had a good day.....balanced with remembering the reason for this day and remembering all those who served this country so well.

    Thanks to all my bbq buds for giving me so many good ideas.

    Never heard of anyone making there own mustard....must have lived a sheltered life. Can you tell me more about that and why you make your own?

    Saw a bbq show yesterday on the food channel and one group uses pecan hulls to smoke the pork. They also inject apple cider into the pork shoulders. Lot of good tips there.

    Out the door to brunch. May have some coastal eggs benedict. Crab cakes instead of canadian bacon or ham.

  10. I'm smoking lamb with pecan wood for about two hours-then baking it in the oven, and using balsalmic vinegar & Shiraz to spritz. No ribs were on sale here this week, and you guys have me salivating for a good rack or two, so I'll spend the $4.99/lb, rub them good, and get happy with some good beverages.

    Dee, Have you ever visited the Mount Horub Mustard site? They have hundreds of styles of mustard. I make my own with mustard seeds that I get from them.

    Reread the last page of this thread this morning as I start thinking about tonights menu. SSH.... the smoked lamb sounds wonderful. Did you smoke a leg of lamb? How long on the smoker and how long in the oven.....what temperature.

  11. Mark....whats the cook time on the pork stuffed chickens?

    Not cooking on the grill tonight but tommorow for sure.

    Spent the afternoon with Mr.& Mrs. Bluesboy making a jazz tape and having a couple of martinis. Discussed warm up time for tubes and if they start sounding better as time goes by or if its just the alcohol kicking in. We have to start debunking some of the snake oil that is passed off as the gospel.

  12. Sounds like the grills are humming. Did lamb chops last Sunday.....may try veal chops tommorow night and ribs memorial day. Anyone done veal before? Any tips?

    I've got a new batch of Dinosaur mutha sauce and ready to try it on baby backs. May do a beer can chicken at the same time.

    I watched a cooking program once where the cook stuffed a chicken with a cornish game hen and then stuffed both of them in a turkey. Anyone tried that?

  13. I dabble a little....well actually a lot. My retirement is entirely linked to the market....if it does well I retire earlier and vice vesa. Iam way to agressive for my age.....kinda like my golf game. If there is a creek 220 yards ahead I try to get over.

    Heard Cramers prediction for 14,540 by year end.....hope he is right. If not.....if there is a serious correction like year 2000 they may have to put an escalator in at work for me to get upstairs when I am 85.

    Mostly in individual stocks and a few funds. I have started buying some higher quality stocks that pay 4% or better rather than high fliers but still a gambler.

  14. Man.....those steaks at Doe's look good....2 and 3 pounders at that. Figure that Porterhouse would be about $50. Its almost time for the long weekend.....two supermarkets have babyback ribs for $2.99 a pound. Can't beat that with a stick. May have to get a rack or three for the holiday.

    Squeaky is fairly laid back.....so maybe Jimmy.....but you know like Jimmy Otis was a party boy too....and had the good sense to check himself into Andy's jail rather than facing the wife drunk. We could compromise and call him Otis Buffet[:^)]

  16. Pressure washed half the house and all of my Weber. Just got through with lamb chops mainated in soy, rosemary, and dijon. More vidalia onions, and cauliflower. The wife said the lamb was cooked just right.

    Didn't leave home today and just enjoyed the peace and quite. Nature in all its glory with colors and smells that make you glad to be alive. Magnolia blossoms and some vine that I can't remember the name of added to my enjoyment. The yard looks good and half the house is clean. I am tired but its a good tired from hard work and good results. A little buzz going and some red eyes from reading Tom Blasing's thread and remembering the loyal pets in my life as well.
