  1. Glad I did not drive 2.5 hours each way and get a hotel to see Hall and Oates. Better to buy fine wine and cheese and watch reruns of Darryl Halls House!

Diz you need to drive out and check out 30 Monroe in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Too bad on the single core only 5GHz.

Intel screwed up big time at CES with that 28 core stunt. Even funnier was AMD pulling out the 32 core TR, and then Intel going around the show floor and removing the marketing mistakes from the Asus and Gigabyte machines. They know they screwed up!

Anyway, I remember my first PC. We were too poor for the 8086, so we had 8088. Dad did manage to get his hands on the 8087 to drop in.

Interesting times, using higher model numbers on a slower processor.

Anyway, happy birthday to the x86 (40 years) and Intel (50 years)

8088 sweet the simple days when analog world still dominated.

I may need to have my AA crossovers rebuilt to try and compare,I never wanted to mess with the original crossovers so I could always put the speakers back to original condition.

    What year are you using?

Older networks and caps in particular I would not perceive an advantage to return to.

  4. Pine Knob always sounded better than any Detroit arena.

Worst concert sound with the best performance was Tull 1980 (?) at The Olympia in Detroit before they demolished it.

Thanks!  I have a special place in my heart for Chorus II's also. So until they make Chorus III's (and I'm not holding my breath)...

I really appreciate the Chorus II. I will never part with them. After Dean replaced the network components they were so good I was disappointed in the stock design. The grill was better build quality than the networks.

If I could find both k Horns and LS II close to home I would probably sell off the Belle's and go with LS II just for simplicity of room placement.

Karajan, Berlin Phillharmonique.  Duetch Grammafone.  The best conductor in the world conducting one of the best symphonic orchestras in the world on an album with fantastic production value.

That's from memory, not from Google.  Forgive the poor spelling I'm sure.

Great buy on Warner CD. Not DG but got this 2 months ago and am very impressed.

  7. It seems Krakatoa was documented well. Sleeping Lady outside of Mexico City not so much or the Spaniards trampled the history in their quest for mineral wealth. I saw a small detonation of Popo in Mexico and it was a humbling experience.

That's the whole point.  They don't want people arguing because in some cases, the people stop getting along, and it gets rather nasty!  We've seen that in the old arguments over "tubes vs. SS" and "digital vs. analog."  People will argue about anything.

The difference is that Klipsch, on the one hand, desires its unusually high activity for a manufacturer's forum.  On the other hand, it wants it to be all fun and games with very modest dissent, if at all.   I can certainly see the balance there, and from appearances, I guess it seems to work out alright.  I am seeing new names all the time with more than a few hundred posts.  Something's working.

Granted, it's a lot more boring than in those days of old, but most assuredly, arguments over speaker coils can get a bit over the top.  It wasn't the speaker coils that were so entertaining, but rather the spectacle of the participants going at it on a speaker forum of all places!  Had there been freedoms like those you can find in the Netherworld of the internet, I don't think it could have possibly been as fun to watch.

I haven't even looked over in 2-chan in a long time.  Is 2-chan relevant anymore?  Do they still argue about these things over there, or are these just memories of a bygone era?  It wouldn't matter, anyway.  Digital and SS won.

2 channel is stale. Digital and analog is a tie and tubes rule.

Interesting. I'd never would have suspected jitter as a culprit. (Obviously unless they just make a crappy CD and brick it 1000%.)

But I kinda see your point. We had one of those two pound $20 Thanksgiving special DVD players in our bedroom that would make a noise/vibrate due to the spin of the platter.

    Embarrassing.

I told my wife it broke. Since then I haven't replaced it until now. The Yamaha will do sound duties while the Sony 7000(dual lasers) will be spinning DVD's. Without vibrating.

Don't know if it has dual power supplies.

Here is a pic of it stripped down.

    https://www.audiogon.com/listings/lis8hg6b-msb-technology-link-dac-iii-d-a-converter-12168-headphone-amps-dacs

This is way overpriced unless it includes the outboard Monolithic Power Supply.

I went have been through three versions of the MSB before upgrading to the Channel Islands who used to modify MSB DACs ( I have one). Also maybe 4 transports since 2000.

I tend to favor Burr Brown chips. I have never came across a deal to try a DAC with a Wolfson chip.

For now I use AQ Dragonfly for streaming and CIA for CDs. Firmware has allot to do with CD playback but design and build quality reduces the jitter.

Allot of great digital to experiment with old and new!

Very true. According to one website where the tech dismantled one of these to repair a malfunction he stated there are19 different boards in here.

    Yikes!

Although I wasn't able to get into the guts of the system I did take the top off. Surprisingly the lid itself is 1/8" aluminum. Don't quote me on the thickness but it's pretty dang heavy & thick for just being the top cover.

By fortunate circumstances I'm finding there's a synergy between this CD player and the Marantz 2500. I've said it before once the Marantz was fully restored it's in the Yamaha orbit in terms of it's musicality.

(On the other hand my vintage Sony Str 7055 is more in Denon orbit due to its rounded musicality and it's laid-back sound)

I'm wondering if that has anything to do with what I'm hearing. This CD player represented a time before Yamaha decided to brighten the sound and make their equipment sound a little too bright, and forward sounding.

    To me.

Now for the last couple days for I've been listening to CDs in their entirety. That is rare for me to do. On occasion some of the music by the artist makes me lift my head up.

    This has certainly been enjoyable.

Listening to the music without losing interest in my mind is the reduction of jitter induced listener fatigue.

The shielding and layout was amazing in those old high end players. I infer there are separate power supplies for different functions.

  13. Although the DACs are better in today world the engineering is all mass market. In some older players the design was meticulous to minimize jitter. Very labor intensive assembly. Separate boards for different functions (transport, clock, DAC, Op Amps, display.)

I had an early Integra CD player that weighed over 30 pounds. The internal shielding of separate functions was quite detailed. My long decades quest was the less jitter the more I listened to digital. I like three box Redbook CD solutions.

    MQA is a CODEC.

"CODEC" has two meanings that I know of.

    1. Hardware based. Performs A/D and D/A conversion. Example: a modem (coder/decoder=co/dec=codec)

    2. Software based. Process for encoding sound and/or video in digital form for broadcast or streaming. In this case it represents what is required for COmpression/DECompression.

Typically it is something that can be "encapsulated", then "decapsulated" at the receiving end. This can be used by/sent with any file format type

    Artto;

I applaud your due diligence in the investigation.

16/44 has taken some years to sound pleasant and non fatiguing. I wish storage and CPUs would have moved faster and we could have been given 24 / 88 in the first place. Oh well.....

I did hear MQA at the AXPONA Meridian booth a couple of years ago. Tough to say much about a room at a show but Meridian did not disappoint. For me looking to head to Tidal when the weather gets cold in late 2018 I will start off with a Meridian Explorer. Right now I just use a AQ Dragonfly for low res streaming for convenience or to find new music.

I was impressed that NY put out his catalog temporarily free of charge for high res streaming. Neil can be a crazy person but his premise on quality has been solid.

Another thing you said needs to be reinforced. ROOM! Finally for two channel I have a long wall room with two back hallways that naturally reduce reflections. There are allot of framed pictures I need to keep the SPL moderated as to not get crazy vibrations.

I still get plenty loud but still like to talk without shouting. I am trying to go to a symphony every three months for reference.

Now thats funny......................So how old b-4 I get eggs ?  Cleaned out the coop Saturday for first time had to drill holes to drain the water otherwise pretty painless except trying to keep the birds out while the floor dried.

also now when we wake in the am all the birds have figured out how to get through the eaves  at the roof, all 11 are happily pecking at the ground when we get up. Should I wire that area to keep them in ?  Thoughts ?

    4-5 months

I have some of mine open but only 3 inch slots. Good idea though.

I see so now you Live in Ionia, in other words, Livionia.

    @Audio Flynn

But seriously, there are wild mink in Ionia?  I’m surprised they’re anywhere in Michigan other than closets.

    EDIT: 4/26/18 a 11:48

I see that wild mink are common in Michigan, and throughout North America.  It makes sense, but I never thought about it.

FYI, we had a pet chinchilla.  I looked it up.  It takes 300 chinchillas to make a coat.  Not surprising, since their hands are so small.

In five years I have been within six feet of a mink. Tiny scary murderous beasts!

I cannot see the bottom of the gate. I do put chicken wire at the bottom of the gates at the hinge and lock area. Gate does swing funky but it keeps the small nasty predators out.

We do not have snake problems in Michigan but the DAMN minks are frustrating. I do not have a successful method of trapping them.

  18. I have done chickens since 2010. Currently rebuilding my flock.

Hawks and mink killed off allot of my older fowl last year. Guniea Hens make me nuts. They would not roost inside and 14 of 16 were killed by owls in 3 weeks after they were inside the coop for 5 months.

I am adding three geese as a predator deterrent this time. I prefer to free range since they eat the insects and fertilize the lawn. Very pretty 'portable shrubbery'.

I love duck eggs. Kacki Campbells and other frequent layers.

At times I do 25 meat chickens at a time. I have 3 coops.
