  1. hah...

    thanks dougdrake for noticing...

i've actually been hiding on the 3dfiles.com bulletin board, a 3D oriented computer bb... that's because I just bought a new computer and needed some info, then I got hooked on PCs again, ect...

but now I'm back here for good, because I'm getting a job as a salesperson in an audio/video store, so I'll need all the technical backing I can get!

  2. *amateur pitching in*

You know, there are many DVDs you can rent or maybe already have (if you have a DVD player, which I suppose you do since you use 5ch. stereo sometimes, implying a multichannel audio/video setup) with the THX Optimode series of tests on them. One of the tests tests the polarity of all the speakers rel. to each other. Might be of some use.

DVDs I can think of that have those tests... Fight Club, Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition, Toy Story 2 Pack, and... My memory is failing. At 20 years old. Sorry.cwm35.gif

  3. 1) if I remember correctly, the Game Theater XP puts out a lower volume than the SB Live!...

    2) it all depends on your software settings; I have them set at wave=max, main sound=75%, no bass/treble adjustments.

    3) people exaggerate. I was also disappointed when I first got my pros because people were saying stuff like "they shake my house's foundations" and "they make the windows shake uncontrollably" amd so on... this is of course not true, only a full blown HT system could do such things. so just enjoy the sound and forget what everyone told you. if you want to be reassured, just pop in your old PC speakers and compare them with the pros.

    4) they will sound a little better after breaking in, but no spectacular improvement is to be expected.

  4. well in my experience WinDVD actually uses less cpu time (I cheked this, it uses about half the percentage of PowerDVD)

but I have found PowerDVD to have better sound. I didn't notice any difference in image. I am using PowerDVD.

    'cuz nobody ever said

    "Pump up the treble!"

  5. first of all, you need to understand that you don't need to have your speakers and subs matched in terms of brand. it's not like there is a lot of tonal differences between subs...

but with the Quintets, which have a pretty limited frequency response, we're not really talking about speakers but satellites here. so my best thought would be to go with a Klipsch sub, since they are designed to qork with the Quintets frequency response-wise.

but don't limit yourself. listen to as many subs as you can. as for Klipsch subs, I can't give you any advice on which one is the best, haven't listened to them at all.

    good luck!

  6. yes is think it was probbly more like 499

don't mess with any bass settings in software.

you are going to get as much bass as the sub can put out by maxing out the subwoofer volume.

messing with bass in software just messes up the sound.

  7. Heh, someone noticed...

I've been busy with exams and stuff...

And I admit I hanged out on the 3dfiles.com bulletin board, I needed to learn about computers.

But now I'll be checking here every so often.

Did a lot of things happen while I was gone?

  8. thank you guys!

i think I'm going to go with the Rat Shack miniplug to coax method, as the only reason to go with optical would be that I wouldn't have to unplug my dvd player from my receiver.

but i figure, hey, I'm not going to use the PC on my ht that much, and unplugging and replugging a wire won't be much of a problem compared to moving my pc every time...

I'll let you know if it works.

Playing games like this should be fun.

  9. Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've visited here... I'm sure I missed a lot of potential knowledge, but I don't think I'll go back and read all the posts I missed.

ANYWAYS, I have a question. I already asked it down in the Sound Cards forum, but I think I should ask it here since you guys probably have more knowledge about this particular case.

My soundblaster live! value has a digital out which is in the miniplug format (same as discman or whatever else).

I want to run that to my receiver. Now obviously I can't convert the digital miniplug out to an optical out, which would have been perfect, but I was wondering if I could use an adapter to convert the miniplug into digital coax.

I was doubtful, but someone told me that I could just use a regular MONO miniplug to RCA adapter from Radio Shack.

    actual adapter http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F005%5F003%5F009%5F004&product%5Fid=910%2D0777

my question is simple: would it work?

    thanks y'all!

  10. UPDATE! UPDATE!

I live in Montreal and I just saw today on a wall of the city, a graffiti that said, you guessed it "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!"

It made me laugh my pants off and everybody thought I was crazy. Still, the thought of all those innocent people who do not realize this is a sign of the oppressor... or who just stare at this while thinking "huh? am i an idiot?" or "stupid immigrants, they can't even tag for their life!"...

I will get a picture of it eventually, when my mom gets her digital camera.
