  1. Yes, I mean stuffing the rear chamber. Unfortunatley the woofer in question is so far off that it does not change anything. However the K33 does respond. The light grey line is with loose fiberglass. It is why you should'nt do it with this driver. Note the high end rolloff. As a side note I don't see anything wrong with using different drivers. You just need to be carefull with your selection. Matching, not more power, is the key.
  2. Sorry to say but it appears that your woofer is a poor match for the khorn cabinet. Using Hornresp (an excellent horn modeling program) and your woofer specs (http://www.pispeakers.com/JBL_2226.pdf) I get a response of: Compare this with the model of the K33 with a 3 x 13" slot, shown above. I would suggest you download the program then contact me for the khorn parameters. I would then play with stuffing, slot size, etc. to see if you can get the woofer to behave better. As a side note the 8 ohm is generally not a problem. I have used 8 ohm speakers very successfully in the khorn cabinet.
  3. I have mentioned this before so please forgive me, I just hope someone with enough gumption and resources will try this. Foobar 2000 is windows media player with great features. François Bourdon has developed the foo_dsp_xover plugin which is an active crossover. With the right soundcard one can use their computer as an active crossover. You could then biamp to the khorns. It even supports time delays.
  4. Great woofer hatch. I struggled getting mine to look and seal correctly also. One think you might want to consider is a mod I did on the woofer motor board. I took a router with a 1/2" rounding bit and put a radius on the outside of the motor board throat slot. This removes the sharp corner. I got this from modern advances in port design. All modern ports have a radius in order to remove wave diffraction effects. I am sure this applies to the khorn woofer throat slot. One difference in my build is that while my throat slot on the motorboard is 3" x 13" my slot in the woofer cabinet is 6" x 13". Originally I did this for experimentation. Although I am not much on subjective observations, I believe it smooths the sound. I can notice a definite improvement while listening to my reference Bach organ concerto. P.S. I also would like the email, I can handle a 5 meg one easily.
  5. Old phenolic diagphrams will degrade and ruin the sound quality. I discovered this when I blew one of my tweeters testing a bad amp. I replaced both diagphrams and could not believe the improvement. It was right up there with my ALK universal crossover upgrade. I now believe that phenolic diagphrams are a wear item. I would replace all of them, including the midrange. After all they are over 25 years old. If that doesn't do the trick start suspecting something in the crossover.
  6. Welcome to the group. You have some interesting equipement to try with the khorns. I look forward to hearing your experiences. I live in Oak Ridge and have hiked the Smokies extensively. The one rule, stay away when the leaves change color. Sevierville is the gateway to the Smokies. It will be bumper to bumper this entire month, plan your trip accordingly. Expect to see a lot of Michigan and Ohio plates.
  7. Although I cannot do it now another idea for an ultimate set of khorns would be to go DSP computer based. Foobar 2000 has plugins for digital crossovers with time delay capability. Using multiple sound cards such as the (cheap) chaintech AV710 one could output the three channels to the amps and directly to the drivers. I am already using the AV710 to output 92khz (upsampled) to the khorns. The most immediate result is the lower noise floor. The silence is deafening. I would love to have someone try this.
  8. I would like to alter my Speakerlabs to have the tailboard, etc. of the Klipsch also. Please email me the other set of plans also.
  9. You may want to consider the condition of your diagphrams. I replaced the old ones in my Khorns and solved a similar tonal problem. In my case I have had the speakers for 20 years and had adjusted to the deterioration. You have the advantage of remembering what they should sound like. I was quite shocked how different the sound was when I replaced them. Most people only replace the diagphrams when they fail. I have learned that they are a wear item with a finite lifespan. In any case a recapping is probably in order, IMHO crossover caps are also a wear item with a limited lifespan. Also examine the internal wire. I am not sure about the Heresy but Klipsch did put the old monster wire in some models. If you have the "green and greasy" Monster wire then replacing it will also restore the sound you remember.
  10. Ouch, I did this 20 years ago, crosscut saw with a rip fence. years of planning, etc. It was painfull. I too am using ALK universal crossovers with great results. My marriage did survive it, I think? Here is a pic of the final result:
