  1. my 2 cents is this, which one will fit better? do you already have shelves on the front stage or is it a blank wall where you would need to either mount to buy/make a speaker stand?

you can upgrade the crossover on both so that's a wash.....

unless you are putting them in a true HT room with acoustic built walls, it will be hard to hear the difference.

good luck with the decision (oh side note...picking up/ moving the RB-75's are easier than the RF-5's, just say'n...)

  2. to revisit this topic....

so part of the reason i wanted a new blu-ray player was my PS3 would sometimes not play certain blu-rays. this drove me nuts! well, a quick google search sent me the fix. a file is corrupted and you go through the steps to reset it.  it's now fixed, but i'm still a little torn....

believe it or not, the wife gave me the go ahead to buy a PS4.  I know! i know! i should stop here but i'm just not that excited about it.  she then tells me to get an Xbox One, I know I know! i should REALLY stop there.  the issue with that, there are specific games on the ps4 i'd rather play, but i don't care that much.

i already know the PS4 missed the mark for a blu-ray player, not too sure how the Xbox One "sounds"

so, i'm still thinking of getting an Oppo.  when i look at the spec of the 83, i don't see 4K upscaling.  the 101ci seems like a smart choice.  i won't need the apps because the next TV i buy will have that.  the 103 has the better processor.

i think if i can find a deal on a 103 i'll get that.  i honestly don't play games at all.  i'm about to put my Wii up for sale.  it was nice to have.  we played it, but we go very long periods of time not playing it.

  3. This comes up often.

Stopping sound from transversing a wall is difficult. The wall vibrates at bass notes and sound also gets though any holes. In recording studios they build two walls isolated from each other.

A panel or many panels will not stop this.

If you want to build panels which will absorb higher frequencies (which will probably only help reduce transmission a little) you should look at

    http://www.owenscorning.com/NetworkShare/EIS/14775-Fiberglas-700-Series-Insulation-Product-Data-Sheet.pdf

HD sells some of it. Go look.

You can row around the Internet and find that commercially made absorbing panels are made of the stuff. But you're paying for their cloth covers, frames, and means of attaching it to a wall. By some standards, a rip off.

As far as getting decorative. Putting some cloth over it by yourself can give a nice appearance. Are there Star Wars towels or table cloths? But something like a paper poster over the fiberglass slab will probably defeat absorption.

You could cut the panels in an outlines of Star Wars icons. Say, circles for the Death Star and cover in cloth, and draw details with a Sharpie.

There could be more WAF if she does the artwork, I'd think.

    WMcD

yeah, i get you.  it's what the acoustic guy told me.  u just can't put a panel or some batt insulation and u are done.  you have to build the wall a specific way.  i'm just hoping a few acoustic panels will "help" limit a small amount of sound.  this is why i want to keep it cheap.  i can pay a few hundred and he will install the R7 insulation.  i'm hoping if i can get a good quote on blown in batt, it will be "better" and maybe a touch cheaper.  and i won't have to cut a 2' section across my wall out.

  4.

Post a pic if possible.  People are always looking for ways to make the wires neater.

do you mean of how my ET looks now? if so, now way! it doesn't look good! it's close thought.  getting the Monoprice HDMI non active cables did help! i promise though, once it gets done, i'll post a ton of pics!

  5. seeking advice of people who actually built their own acoustic panels.  i did a lot of research and found all the different materials and a few different build techniques.  what i'm trying to find out is what materials actually seemed to work the best from those who build different ones.  i'm looking to build 3 panels to go around my TV then maybe some smaller ones at the very top of the wall.  i'm really just trying to stop some sound from transferring between the living room wall and the back bedroom.

i've already looked into sound proofing that wall, it's just not cost effective. i had the batt sound proofing in my old home, and it really did nothing.  my last resort is to fill the walls with blown in insulation.  i did have a guy who specialized in acoustic wall treatment and just due to where the wall is, whats around it, and what we would have to do, it will get to $5K in a heart beat. (that is if i want to actually sound proof it).

the cloth material covering the sound proofing won't be a simple black.  i'll want to have something that is WAF and possibly match our decor.  it would be awesome if there were some Star Wars material that will work with acoustic panels! my wife would go crazy if i can make some R2D2  panels! i know i can spend $600 for a few panels and they can print that, but i'm way to cheap for that!

    thanks for any help!

  6. oh, i know this is a bit old, but i figured out a really cheap and easy way to use zip ties.  that is assuming you want to use zip ties.  so in my pictures you see the white "ladders" i cut down to only have 2 positions.  well, instead of those, you can staple each zip tie in a row.  i did it with my staple gun (test piece of wood) and if you set the staple gun right, it won't pinch the ties down.  that way you can zip the wires down, but not have to remove the staple if you need to cut that tie.  oh, my staple gun was bought at Harbor Freight (for reference).  i would put a staple every 3" apart, that way the weight is shared more and the staples won't be stressed as much.

anyways, just something i was messing around with.  my ET center is half done now, waiting on the new TV to be purchased and mounted before i can actually fully finish the job.  oh, maybe an Oppo player if i can convince myself to buy one!

  7. you double the db gain when you use both the L/R inputs.  using 1 input you only get 3db.  i personally use the 2 male 1 female adapter from monoprice, i had to save up for it because it cost .65! lol!

so far, from what i have seen from klipsch subs, they utilize the duel inputs this way.  my current sub (Sunfire True 12") does not.  easiest way to know if your sub does or does not, use a standard adapter (like the one i just mentioned) and if it fits, that sub will benefit from it.

if you don't believe me, hook it up, use 1 input, listen, then hook up both, listen.

  8. i have a very small wrinkle that appeared magically.  there has been no noticed change in sound.

someone just posted they are looking for a RC7 and another mentioned a fair price is $300 and the guy said he was good with that.

  9. not sure what your pocket book would think, but i would just go all HD wireless then.  trying to "patch" 2 different technologies won't lead to "perfect" results.

i personally ditched my rear 4's when i moved into my open floor plan.

  10. The RF 7 Classic is a good looking speaker and they don't come up for sale often. Congrats on the pickup!

might get banished for this, but i "like" the original 7's, but prefer the look of the 7II.  the black dust cap takes from the look (to me, just to me). i was (for a while) trying to swap out my RC7 for a RC64, but it just won't work.  i modified my center to match my mains so it won't be a good match for anyone else.

i just really like the look of the RC64.  if you go original RF7, with original RC64, and then do a crossover mod and have all matching caps (based on your personal taste) you should get a good sound stage.  but then you would have black dust caps and non black dust caps.

  11. Why wouldn't you run the Cable Box HDMI into the receiver and then run the output HDMI to the TV?

    ^^^

    what he said....

everything goes to the receiver...then 1 HDMI out to the TV.  in my case, i have 1 hdmi from cable box to TV, then all my other gear runs through the processor, and 1 hdmi out to the tv.  this way i don't have to have my processor/amp/what ever on to watch normal cable TV.

if you want Red Mere (or Active) cables, you can't use them to go through anything.  so in my specific case, only the hdmi from the cable to the tv can be a Red Mere (or Active)

in your processor settings, you will want to turn off "hdmi audio out" because the audio will not play through the processor, but output to the TV.  (at least some will, some won't.)

  12. ...but if this is your only setup, you aren't gonna want that 75" new tv having dinky sound to accompany it.

i say buy some wire track and run it along your baseboard and you won't even notice it then you dont have to run any new wires in wall. problem solved and you get to keep your amazing blow your hair off setup.  B)

i think the TV comment is what i wasn't considering.  you are right, a nice big TV with tiny speakers seems dumb. right now with the 42" it almost looks dumb with big speakers.

i was only talking about running wires in the wall if i went with the G28's.  i would have to drill horizontal thru the wall, not a huge deal, i just didn't want to.

in my current set up, the wire you see to the mains (center too) will be replaced at some point.  i just don't know by what or when.  i will most likely run a small speaker wire track against the wall and blend it in, apposed to running it all the way vertical and back down, increasing my speakers cables from 9' to 30'.  honestly, i think i want to explore the braided speaker cable route.  i really like the new power cables i made with a 4 braid x 4 braid, so the braided speaker cables should fit right in.

thanks Scrappydue from talking me off the ledge!

  13. Hello fellow K-heads!

i've had a complete 7.1 setup (RF-7/Emotiva) , dual amps, total blow your hair back set up....

i had to move and box it up for several years.... i've recently started back over but i can only do a 3.1.  it's set up, tuned in, and still sounds good when i run the THX demo.

here's my thoughts...i'm thinking of putting the entire 7 series away.  i already have 1 amp, and 4 RS-42's boxed up.  i doubt i can sell my set up due to all the mods.  my mods don't come with a "name brand" just me, my word, and the caps i chose (which differ from the norm).

i'm thinking of going with a G42 because it's very clean and i can mount it below my future 75" TV.  i would leave my entertainment system alone, because i would still use my UMC-1 with XPA-3.  i know, the XPA is a little overkill, but it's what i have.  this way i can still use my Sunfire Sub and not need to do any additional cabling.

my concern... the G42 will sound so much worse than the 7 series.  i've never heard one but i know it can't compete with any reference speaker.  i was also thinking of 3 G-28's, but they are $350 each.  just a bit much for what you get.  i know that series is about performance with a certain look (which i like), but i don't want to run all the wires in the walls.  (i know, silly reason).

so what does everyone think? is this just a dumb idea? will i regret the switch?

oh, the G42 doesn't come cheap.  it's $550 new from an authorized dealer. (Sound Distributors)

posting a pic of the 3.1.  it's not "finished" but it gets the point across.  the 42" looks super small, and No, i wouldn't normally set a TV on a RC-7, but i really have no choice. the speaker wire is just Mil Spec 12awg twisted pair.  i had it laying around i knew it would "work". post-21676-0-58560000-1451937791_thumb.j

  14. so, i have the Logitech One, what i hate is my dog seems to sit, stand, lay, and hover in the EXACT spot that will block the remote from working! i know, so stupid but i get so frustrated, especially when i am fast forwarding....

so i'm looking into ANYTHING else that is dog proof. my first thought is to stick with Logitech, but i don't know which model would be best.  Oh sure, the "Elite" seems it would work, but i'm not spending $300+ on a remote.  i looked up the 900 which is the same as the One, but is RF.  i see there are a few emitters, but i hope i don't need one for each device. i really don't know how or what i need for that remote to work.

it would be awesome if there was a remote that worked with Linux Mint, but i don't think that is going to happen.

does anyone have a suggestion on a remote that i can program, be "dog proof", and can do the simple 1 button operation of turning on multiple devices at once?

    thanks!

  15. specs on the Sony look amazing.  "Super WiFi", what ever that is, i want that! lmao! "super quick start", sounds great, just curious if you really start watching your movie in a minute...."Screen Mirroring" sounds cool.  maybe if i'm watching NFL mobile on the phone, it would transfer???

  16. Ok, let me be honest, i "want" an Oppo player, i don't "need" an Oppo player...

i am currently using the PS3 for a Do-It-All.  so far, i've been very happy with it, but i also have no idea of it's playing quality vs. others...

i only have a 3.1 set up, so most of the nice 7.1 features are out the window...

i read Willand's response to "Recommended Blu-Ray player"...

i am thinking of getting a PS4, but i already found out the blu-ray HT player ability is on the low/sucky (that's a real term by the way...lol)...

so considering Willand's list, is there a player that would be sub $300? is that even possible.  Ebay had the 93/95 for $500...

i saw an Oppo BDP-83 for $410 + shipping, but most thought that was too much, would that player be a good choice considering i'm only a 3.1?

    suggestions appreciated....

    thanks again

**just looked at Audiogon, Oppo 83 for $275**
