  1. To contradict some of the opinions here, I was in a similar position and decided to replace the amplifier portion of my receiver with an Outlaw 7500. It was a simple and seamless upgrade. HOWEVER, my ears could not tell the difference with the soundtracks I listened to. Although many say that you can achieve greater soundstage and the headroom will undoubtedly give better response, in my application, the difference with my RF-7's was negligible using my unscientific measurement methods. In retrospect, the money spent only helped satisfy my upgrade needs. Time might have been better spent determining frequency response of the room and doing the appropriate treatments. (Too bad I don't have the tools nor the expertise in this area)
  2. I'm sorry but I don't understand what a Fathom subwoofer has to do with getting best sound from RF-7's. Bass has never been an issue for the system (I have Velodyne+RSW15), but without the subs, I've found the RF-7's to be a bit lifeless and having a bit of a gap in the midrange. I've blamed amplifier and room/accoustics already, so my next step might be to give DeanG x-over network a shot. Other suggestions welcomed.
  3. Just wanted to update everyone that helped me with the issue of RF-7 sounding a bit "dull". Maybe this is a placebo affect, but I just purchased an Outlaw 7500 amp and it has helped the sound a bit. The (RC-7) center channel now sounds clearer for home theater. (better mids) But the rest (RF-7's) hasn't dramatically improved. I guess I just threw money out the window, but I feel better knowing that I've got lots of wattage. :-)
  4. Thanks to all. I'll try placement, potentially, I need to move off the wall further than RF-3. I guess at the end of the day, I'm trying to justify electronic purchase. I'll try both the move and the amp and let everyone know which one makes the most difference. Tks
  5. Thanks for the quick response. The AVR 4802R does just fine and I have the same sub as well. Its not the sound levels I'm talking about, its more about the dynamic range of the system. It almost sounds muted when compared with the RF/RC3 and RF5 setup I had before. I had hoped that my main RF7 system would sound better than my previous combo that's moved to the bedroom. I'm probably nit-picking since the overall system is great, but like all enthusiasts, I'm thinking about how to extract an extra 10% from existing equipment without a large investment. Another thought is to go with DeanG circuit mod, but I didn't want to do that until after I've had the RF7 for a while. Tks!
  6. Another newbie question: I have a Denon 4802 - Theoretical 125W x 7 powering the entire HT. It works just fine, but I don't feel that the sound is outstanding and the soundstage just doesn't jump at me. There is no science behind my evaluation, just a gut feeling. Since I don't listen at high levels, does anyone believe an Aragon 3005 (which I can get at a good price) will significantly help with my situation? I know there are many factors, but just thoughts in general. Option 2 would be to save the money and invest in sound treatments. Any opinions?

    Got my RB-75

I purchased a demo/open box and I have no problems with damage to aesthetics of the speaker. What I would like to know is whether the performance (audio fidelity) of the speaker has been damaged.

    Got my RB-75

    2) I'm just eyeballing a RadioShack SPL meter and using the freq sweep on the AVIA HT DVD. Obviously I don't have an anechoic chamber and don't have verification beyond my ears and a cheap meter. I'll move the speakers to another room to verify, but so far, I'm not hearing as rich a sound coming from the RB-75's. (No measurement, just subjective thoughts)... I've also placed the speakers on top of a desk so that the horns are at about ear-level. Based on the return policy for demo/open products, I have 14 days to determine if I'm happy with the sound. Need help.. Its difficult to avoid clouding my opinions after seeing cabinet damage and rough handling on the speakers.

    Got my RB-75

Hello All, Just a follow up. I had mentioned about the RB-75's I was thinking about purchasing that had cabinet damage. I've made the purchase but now found out that there was a clunking noise inside one of the speakers. It looks like the horn driver (magnet portion) has separated from the plastic front fascia. I've tied it back together and everything seems fine. A couple of questions for the experts: 1) Is there a way attach the horn to the fascia plastic? Recommendations? 2) There is a ~5-10db drop in SPL around the 110-125hz range (normal?) Is that the xover point from horn to woofer? 3) I have RF-7's as well and they seem to be more efficient than the RB-75. Is that normal? Shouldn't the RB-75 be better?

    RB-75 Auditioning

Yes, there was quite a bit of damage on the cabinet with lots of scratches. Approx ~400 for the pair. I'll try to post a pic of equipment. (thoughts on price?) I can live with ugliness, I can't live with poor performance though..... (hmm.. was I talking about speakers or girlfriends?)
  11. Hello everyone, I recently found some RB-75's used for demo purposes that has some evident damage to one of the cabinets. The cone itself looks like there is no visible damage. Questions: 1) Could a damaged cabinet affect audio quality for HT purposes? (Cabinet damage does not extend into the speaker chamber) 2) What is the best way to determine actual problems with the speaker in the store? My current plan is to bring a CD with freq sweep and see if I can detect problems at any range with my own ear. But this might be time consuming, ultimately not worthwhile without placement in a properly treated room and less than optimal without a "golden" ear. Other ideas on a simplified method?
  12. I'm in LA and would be interested to pick it up locally. Is it still available and would you please contact me.
