  1. here is a pic, on cabinet built(Except for sanding and finishing Walnut), second halfway done. I'm pretty sure I will do a 3/4" roundover around the face and make a black grill. Thanksk for everyones help Bob
  2. I'll take some pic's tonight....I'm learning alot. Patience is a verture. Just tell me how much better fresh wood is going to sound....than 30 year old beat up - must be loose and not airtight somewhere...when I chiped away at the old cabinets, they looked like some realy bad industrial grade plywood, i'm hoping the Birch i'm using has a better sound. also anyone know about the sonicap AA rebuild kit the guy on ebay sells for $77, is that all i need for a cap refresh...I figure since I'm moving everthing I might as well replace the caps...I have to big old cans (No leaks)
  3. I have the second dog house glued and drying -Next is drilling and installing the t-nuts, can anyone provide my with a dimention layout. or do I have to open up the old one's and take out a driver (I was hoping not to have to do that)
  4. Just want to keep saying how much I listen and apriciate everyones' input. I have built a few pr of speakers before and come from the background if I need someting I buy it (tools). On the first doghouse I learned a lot. I spent a whole hour making a rig and figuring out how to get CLEAN 60 degree cuts on my small Table saw (I found older posts with the jig i made) . I'm using a jig saw and router to make the openings on the motorpanels and bottom door. I also found the right way to assemble the 22" angles together, seems the first time I was left with a 17" motorboard width instead of 15-1/2. I took my router with a 3/4 cuter and went strait down the pointed seem - Reglued and I was perfect. 3 hours work 1 dog house perfect...I'll do the next one tonight. I also glued the 3" wings and spliter on the back panel instead of the wings on the Motorboard and the spliter on the back panel (I got it perfect no spaces). Thanks again Bob
  5. Go boys go,,,,I appreciate all the discussion and definatly listen and learn. My room does have a doorway to the left and a opening to a big room on the right after 4'. the speakers are 6 feet apart about 2' from that left door opening and 2' from a 4' short wall on the right.. I know this is not optimum but this is where I'm doing all my testing. This is not the final resting place as I'm building new cabinets for living room duty (Man these cabinets are weak, if you tap them it sounds hollow and rotted) I do hear the banging inside if I put my ear to against the side Thanks again Bob
  6. As you can see, I dont wast any time. I picked up the wood today at lunch (3/4" Birch plywood) 3 sheets. I have a few questions 1) WHen cutting the Mid and Tweeter holes, they dont mention any kind of round over or angle cut. I have a router will it help? same with Woofer motor board 2) Whats the best way to attach the horns 3) Damping or stuffing the Horn section 4) WHat do I do to get the woofer speaker wire to the X-Over. (Drill a hole fill it after the wire is in) Any other tips Thanks Bob
  7. After spending about 7 good hours listening with my two amps. The Fi and ST70, I'm very happy with each, they both do what they do best, SET of PP. I just ordered the VTA70 board for the ST70 since i'm going to keep it. I noticed that the speakers sound best when getting that first full watt. I dont have a meter but I would say 100db. I have been trying to listen at lower levels and I just seem to loose the bass. Then I tried someting. I walked around the room....It seem I get better base response when I'm off to the side (better than sitting center) Can anyone tell me about room placement, why do they sound better off to the side, is their any sudgestions? (No toe in is best) Another note my room is 14 x 15 with 9' ceiling, once i'm done making my new cabinets...(I was going to add a skin but felt if I had to buy two sheet's I might as well buy three and make nice new cabinets. (taking my time, dog house first). Once I get them done I will move them into my living room which is 24 x15..Hopefull that will be even better... Thanks for any and all sudgestions Bob
  8. They should be here in a few hours. I will be testing them with my Dynaco ST70 and Fi X....I have confirmed with the seller all drivers are 100% with the AA crossover ok (Just old). These speakers were used bya band and the cabinets are beat up (Some of you might have seen the pics from my first post) My first duty (After listening) is to make a new skin, i'm thinking 1/2" Birch plywood Sides and Top, and 1/4" on the front and back all with 45 degree cut to make a nice seem. Does anyone see a problem with making the front baffle 1/4" thicker? also becuase I dont want to sand the inside of the base horn (The only not damged part of the cabinet) it is black. Does anyone know how a two tone cabinet looks. If I put the new skin and finish it with a walnut stain but leave the woofer horn Black or should I just keep them all black?. Also any thoughs on decoupling from the floor, Lets say a riser or some feet? Thanks for all and any sudgestions UPDATE: I have had them hooked up with My st 70 and its all over, I'm selling all my other speakers....I cannot belive the sound, It's the way I always thought the music should be reproduced....Man when they go through drums, I get that snap thats been missing from every pr of speakers I ever had. I'm going to re-finish these speakers like furnature and find the best amp at any cost and this will be my reference system....It took me 30 years of playing around to get here. and I'm only begining....
  9. Looking for opinions on my amp's, I have three. Fi X 2a3 SET - I'm very happy with this on my Fostex BLH. Mint Dynaco ST70 - mallard 5ar4, matched JJ el34's, old but good GE 7199's new biger can cap Oddesy Mono amp's - 185 watts high current. I'm pretty sure the Fi will soound best, but i'm thinking the ST70 extra power would be nice for the headroom. I was also looking at the Tubes for HIFi board upgrade on this amp...or to trade it for a AR clasic 60, Quick siver mini mites or some other high end amp within reason (Under 1000) Any and all sudgestions welcome and appriciated Thanks New to the forum Bob
  10. I'm in Carlstadt NJ. I'm looking foward to the restoration of these. I'm thinking a new skin 1/2" all around and 1/4" on the front all cut with a 45 degree angle to make a small seam...
  11. I'm getting them next week, I was told they are working and no leaks...I got them at a real deal (I think) $482 for the pr. Cabnet needs sanding and refinishing or vaneering (Roundover might be a problem for vaneering)..
  12. Looking for help, I just scored a pr of old beat up Lascalla's and need advice. I gues the Replacing the x-over caps is frist. Can somoen tell me the values. Also The transormers look kind of funky. same question...Is their anything else? Please advise away. I will be using thesewith my Fi X 2a3 SET amp or if I need more power a mint Dynaco ST70.
