  1. It's time for a real surround processor. As always, I'm looking for the greatest bang for my limited buck. I was 99% set on the Outlaw 990 until discovering the Emotiva MMC-1 late last night. To my eye, the MMC-1 is a more attractive unit. It has onboard HDMI rather than DVI, has side-axis ports and will take up to 3 subwoofers. Also, Emotiva has this crazy 40% discount for any future generation processor if you buy one of their current models. These are all advantages over the Outlaw. On the other hand, the Outlaw has switchable DVI, more fully adjustable crossover points, balanced outputs, a slightly lower price and excellent resale value. Also Outlaw has a great reputation and an active and helpful online community (much like Klipsch.) All of this points to the Outlaw.

Now I don't know what to buy! As has been my habit increasingly I turn to my always helpful fellow Klipsch lovers. Emotiva or Outlaw? I have Cornwall center and sides with La Scala fronts. I don't have a SUB yet, but will likely get a Velodyne ULD-18 or two. Are there any other makes that come close enough to Outlaw and Emotiva in terms of value to consider them?

  2. I'm relatively new with shopping for audio items on eBay. It seems like it's been kind of dry for the past couple of months. Maybe it just seems that way because I've become very particular recently. Or maybe eBay sellers are on their summer vacations. Should I expect things to pick up in the fall?

  3. Is the velodyne ULD-15 a good match? In walnut it would match my setup very nicely (at least looking at photos.) I could wait for a ULD-18, but I don't want overkill. I have cornwalls in back, so that end of my system has plenty of bass. I just want to round out the La Scalas in the front. Thanks!

  4. I could see that. I live in a Victorian with lots of wood work, so I am sort of limited with what I can do without creating a clash. The black ones are just so BLACK, so in your face. Then again, I guess La Scalas are in your face no matter what. They are an odd looking animal to begin with, so why not go wild with them! I'd like to see a set painted black and white to look like cowhide.

  5. I have a system with La Scalas front left and right and cornwalls center and rear. Any suggestions for a good sub? I'd like to spend somewhere between $500-$750 used and would greatly prefer a real wood veneer. If it's a particularly good deal I could spend a grand. Forgive me if this is sacreligious, but I'd be willing to step outside of the Klipsch product line for either an outstanding match soundwise or for a better chance of snagging something with a real wood finish. I'll consider both passive and powered (I've no shortage of suitable amps.)

  6. I will not be surprised if we see this set back up on eBay in a few weeks. The buyer who "won" them has a feedback rating of only 2. 50/50 this person will never pay. The bid was an early one though, so this is not the result of a bidding war. I wonder what the actual bid was. $2000? $3000? $25,000? Maybe it's a phoney account controlled by the seller to set up an artificial reserve.

  7. I'm interested in the the fortes.

That is unless someone thinks that they would be poor as side channels in a 7.1 system w/ La Scalas front (R and L), Cornwall center and rears. I have separate 2-channel amps for everything, so I should be able to balence differences in sensitivity.

Also, if anyone has a single or a pair of either la scalas or belles that they want to sell, let me know. I want a belle or a la scala for a center channel. The extra will sit and wait as an eventual center channel for the day I buy some Khorns for my workout room.

  8. Youch, those are cornwalls! I couldn't see the outline of the woofer clearly until a closer look. Judging from the outline, they must be corns. Man, I hope you hear from this person. Here's the other deal of the century, a bit too far for me to travel:

Look like Fortes to my eye. I let Roc Rinaldi know in a PM, but I think they're oak anyway. Still, what a steal if they're for real!

  9. Thanks for the heads up! I'm only 75 miles away. I missed them on eBay because of the "lascala" spelling rather than the "la scala" I have bookmarked. Just trying to decide if I can afford two pairs right now. I have a line on another pair in New England that look good too. I will need a center channel anyway.

Question: if I bought both pairs and I wanted to sell a single, would it be fairly easy to do? I'd be happy to go 50/50 with another forum member if someone is looking for just one. I'll pay for them if I win the auction and hold the extra for as long as anyone who's interested needs.

  10. Wow are those ever beautiful! So very tempting and close enough to Pittsburgh. Problem is I'm switching the front line of my surround sound to la scalas. Awfully tempting just to stick with cornwalls though, especially with near perfect verticals so close.

Anyway, I will debate with myself over whether or not to make an offer. In the meantime, if you ever feel like parting with one of your single belles or if you have an extra la scala, let me know. I'm looking for a center channel to match the scalas I have a line on. Owner says they're maple, I have yet to see pics.

Thanks and good luck, I can't imagine those verticals will last too long.
