  1. Okay... now a 3rd one has jumped into the mix.... It's a Sony. It's the STR-DG910 It has 3 HDMI inputs, video upconversion. It's $425 at Circuit City. Any thoughts on this one?
  2. Okay... after lots and lots of researching receivers, I've narrowed the field down to 2 models. My budget is $500 firm with no room to go over. Onkyo TX-SR605 vs. the Denon AVR-1708 Here's a link to a side by side comparison courtesy of Crutchfield.com http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/ProdComp.asp?g=10420&s=0&c=4&cc=01&compareItems=033AV1708&compareItems=580TXS605S The Onkyo is $399. The Denon is $499. If it matters what the rest of my HT setup is: 65" Mits DLP 1080p TV Klipsch Reference 5.1 speakers (The RB51 set) Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player DirecTV HD-DVR I'm planning to run HDMI from the DVD player and the DirecTV box to the new receiver and run 1 HDMI cable to the TV from the receiver. I may be getting a Blu-Ray player this year as well... so I'd like to have a receiver with at least 3 HDMI inputs, but so far I haven't found such a receiver under $500. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
  3. So I've got the RB-51 bookshelf system. It's fine for movies, but when I'm listening to music in stereo, only the RB-51s and subwoofer are in use. The center channel and surrounds aren't utilized. The RB-51s don't seem like they're enough alone and modes on the receiver that use all the speakers just don't sound right. I'm wondering whether or not I could upgrade my fronts to the RB-61s and keep the RC-52 center. Would that mess up my timbre matching? I am very iffy about upgrading to a bigger, heavier center channel because it sits on a bridge over my TV, and I'm concerned about the weight sinking the bridge in over time.
  4. Today, the subwoofer seems to be fine. Last night after I posted, I found that it worked on DirecTV but not on DVDs. Two different DVDs had the same problem. Today, we've watched two other DVD's that have worked fine. This doesn't make any sense to me. Could it be a problem with the DVD player's audio decoding? I just can't wrap my brain around this. What's up?
  5. My KSW-10 may have died tonight. I'm so frustrated. My wife and I were watching a DVD and I noticed that the LED light on the front of my sub was red (indicating it's in standby mode). I turned the TV, DVD player, and receiver off for a about 15 seconds and turned everything back on. The sub worked fine for a few minutes. Now the LED is blue, but no sound is coming from the subwoofer. The gain is turned almost all the way up. Does anyone know what's going on?
  6. just got my 1st klipsch 5.1 system, the RB-51 system. My question regards sensitivity ratings. The RB-51 fronts are 92dB, kinda low for Klipsch bookshelf models The RC-52 center is 96dB The RS-42 surrounds are 93dB My Sony receiver allows me to adjust the power going to the center channel and surrounds individually, on a scale of -6 to +6. My way of thinking is to set the center output to -4 (because 96dB - 92dB = 4dB) and the surrounds to -1 (because 93dB - 92dB = 1dB). Is this how it's supposed to work or am I barking up the wrong tree?
  7. I got some new RS-42s for Christmas. As you know, they are meant to be mounted on the wall. My issue with that is that I'm afraid they'll look awkward on my living room walls. My wife is also concerned about that, and THAT's why I'm concerned. So... Let me give you a quick rundown of my living room. It's an 18' long x 17' wide room with a vaulted ceiling. The ceiling is 15' feet high at the highest point sloping down to 8' on the R and L sides of the room. The couch is against the back wall. The way the ceiling is vaulted makes me think that in-ceiling speakers could easily be pointed directly at the couch. And certainly they would look better than the RS-42s on the wall. I have the RC-52 center, RB-51 fronts, and RS-42 surrounds. The fronts and the center will sit on top of my entertainment center which is about 12' wide and just under 6' tall. With my living room layout, would in-ceiling speakers perfom as well as the RS-42s? If so, please reccommend some for me. I appreciate everybody's input. Remember, you're helping a guy to keep his wife happy here! []
  8. Well... I may have spent a little too much, but I bought 100' of 12/2 from Parts Express. It was $72 with shipping... pretty pricy I guess but oh well. It's a done deal now. It's on it's way to my door already.
  9. Why is in-wall rated necessary? Is it a safety issue?
  10. I just got the RS-42 surrounds for Christmas (wife won't let me open them yet [] ) and I'm looking for some wire now... The wire will be going from a wall plate behind the receiver up an 8 foot wall, across the ceiling 18 ft to the back of the room, and down the back wall which of course is also 8 ft. That's 34' so far. The ceiling is a vaulted, which makes the math not work out so simply, so I'm estimating 50 feet of wire will be necessary for each speaker. Assuming my calculations are correct, will this speaker wire serve me well? http://www.amazon.com/Gauge-Stranded-Copper-Premium-Speaker/dp/B000RMDX5A/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197781108&sr=8-6 It's 14 gauge speaker wire 99.9% oxygen free copper, about $0.23 per foot. Or do I need to make sure I get 14/2 wire?
  11. I'm in the same boat pretty much. I've got to find some stands as well. My wife thinks the speakers are too big and distracting to mount on the walls. She wants me to put them on stands. So my plan is to please her and put them on stands near the rear corners of the room. I've never owned any stands and I know absolutely nothing about them. Sounds like I have a lot to learn before a buy any. Geez. Can't anything be simple? [*-)]
  12. I don't have a problem with Sony. It's an old receiver and I'm looking to get a new HDMI receiver to modernize my HT a bit. At first I was looking for receivers that are at least 100 watts per channel, but I'm tempted to go with a 75 watt per channel receiver if that's enough juice for my new bookshelf speaker system.
  13. The RC-52 can handle 125 watts RMS. The RB51s and RS42s can handle 75 watts RMS. I have an old Sony 5.1 receiver that's 100 watts per channel. Will I be okay downstepping to a 75 watts per channel Onkyo or Denon? I don't want to need an amp.
  14. Oh... gotcha. The KSW-12. I think I gave $350 or $400 for my 10 a few months ago. Thanks for the input guys.
  15. When you guys say Sub-12, which 12" subwoofer are you talking about? I feel kinda dumb here for asking, but I'm unsure... Do you mean the KSW-12? Or the reference 12? Or some other 12?
