  1. Tom Thanks for te reply, to answer your points. 1 - Its not so much that the sound is bassy, its just very lifeless and flat, almost muffled sounding. No real dynamics. I can hear the bass but its just like the speaker has no energy. 2 - The sound seems better on vocals and Piano but when It gets to large scale stuff or rock music it sounds lifless, I was playing Smoke on the Water from made in Japan and it sounded awful, very flat. 3 - I listen to a wide range, from Heavy rock, Jazz, big classical works. I listen at reasonable levels, im in a townhouse so I cant go to mad. The volume on my preamp was at 12 on a scale of 32. 4 The room is about 14 feet wide and 16 feet long, I have the cabinets on the 14 feet wide end wall, there is a window between the cabinets. They are snug into full corners. I then have the equipment between the cabinets. This is amy master bedroom, so the furnishings are basically a bed and some cabinets. 5 - Yes they came with the sealing strip, which i have fitted 6 - Yes 7- Will do that later this morning. 8 - They are wired normally, i was just referring to the jumper between the two sets of terminals. 9 - I have no idea if they have been modified, im going to investigate that later. Is the fact that im using a pretty powerful amp anything to do with this ? teh Quad is 140 watts and pretty energetic, could it be that im not driving the amp hard enough to be dynamic ? Thanks Alan
  2. Hi They are not biwired, I was referring to the links between the two sets of terminals that can be used for bi wiring. I dont have a camera handy, ill post pics of the wiring tommorrow, its basically a normal pair of speaker wires in. The units are apporx 2005, again ill move them out and get the serial numbers tommorrow, im just on the way out and having been moving khorns all day I need a beer !! Im sure hoping this is something obvious !! Alan
  3. Hi I did listen to them briefly, more just to make sure they were working OK. They seemed fine. Alan
  4. Hi Ive been assembling a 2 channel system for a while now. Anyways ive not been able to get the sound I was looking for, I remembered hearing the Khorns several times and how sweet they sounded. Well after spending a lot of time and money on other stuff I finally took the plunge and bought a barely used pair of Khorns. The problem is that after the man handling to get them in situ I was expecting sweet music, instead ive got pretty flat lifeless bassy music. Obviously not what I intended with the big investment into the Khorns. Im using Quad electronics CDPs/99 pre/909 power amp to drive them along with a Rega 3 turntable. Is there something obvious i might have done wrong is assembling them ? I ensured the bi wiring links were in and rewired the tweeter and mid range. Do i need valve amps to make them sound sweet ? Any help appreciated, any possible dumb *** things that I could have overlooked also welcome. Thanks Alan
  5. Hi How do the amps compare ? Ive often thought that a good pro amp from QSC, Crest, Crown etc would be the way to go, it just strikes me that these companies are amp specialists. How does the QSC sound quality compare to your tube amp ? what tube amp do you have by the way Thanks Alan
  6. Hi Bass is not the overriding factor, im looking for presensce and soundstage. the Cornwalls and above are just to big fpr my room. What level of amp are we looking at for the Chrous ? i do like powerful amps anyways and was looking at maybe a good Crown power amp, i prefer these to the hifi amps as I believe they are far better value. Alan
  7. Hi Loooking for help on how these two compare ? which is the better speaker and used buy ? Thanks alan
  8. Hi In the CD world the most important thing is the quality of the recording. Ive studied this extensively and I have no douby whatsoever that a great recording on a $2000 system will blow away a poor flat recording on a $100,000 system. I have CD"s such as the new Tab Benoit recording that are absolutely great and sound lively and detailed on almost anything. Of course a great CD on a great systems sounds incredible but a bad Cd on a great system still sounds bad, I dont care what type of Khorns and amps etc thay you are using. Alan
  9. Hi I was looking at Cornwalls but have been offered a set of 1980 ish la Scala's for $1500. they are in decent condition but not fantastic. Is this a decent price ? It seems resonable to me but id just like some feedback. If I was to purchase them im thinking of using either the NAD M55 CD or the Marantz SA-15S1 CD, what would be a good value easily available amp ? from my last post im thinking Jolida. Appreciate any thoughts or comments, in the past ive received great info on my quest to build a new system. Thanks
  10. Hi What exactly are you refering to by high damping ? Could you give me an example of what amps would work well ? I think you are refrring to what id call a high current amp, something that doesnt run out of steam easily Alan
  11. Hi I posted about speakers and with the helpful feedback have now decided on a pair of Cornwalls, just a question of seeing whats out there used/new. The next question is source/amps, my music is rock/prog rock/jazz based. I love the musical fidelity stuff but again its to expensive to buy the gear i really like, im currently in Singapore on business and have seen a lot of nice looking chinese valve amps, id be very grateful for feedback on the following questions. 1 - I know the Cornwalls are very sensitive and would give volume at a reasonable amp wattage but would they sound ballsy ( sorry couldnt think of a better word ) with a low power valve integrated amp say 20 watts. Again its not volume im worried about its dynamics. 2 - Has anyone ever used one of these chinese made valve amps ? they look pretty good and seem to sound OK. Once again thanks for everyones feedback Alan
  12. Hi. I started with some good two channel stuff, Creek, NAD, etc and although happy it was missing something. Then i progressed to a good surround system based on Von Schweikert speakers and Pioneer elite electronics Trouble is the two channel had good detail but no substance somehow, the surround has substance but no detail Anyways, i recently heard Klipschorns for the first time and was blown away, they were being driven by the entry level Musical Fidelity gear and sounded incredible. The problem is that I cant afford the Klipschorns so i listened to Cornwall III's and while they are not as great in my room ( 16x16) I believe that they would be almost as good and maybe the klipschorns would be a bit overpowering. So this brings me to the points 1 ) Do the bigger speakers ( Cornwalls, Klpischorns etc ) need a larger room to shine ? 2) Whats the smart used buy ? there seems to be good reports on the Chorus 2, are they in same league as the Cornwalls ? 3) Any other good advice for what to buy ? budget approx $1000-$2000, maybe new cornwalls at a push Thanks Alan Alan
