  1. Artto Nails it.

What is more important than Tubes Vs. Solid State is how well the amp fits your system and your tastes.

My tube amps were designed by someone who has the same speakers as mine. Bass is very tight and matches my speakers.

Other tube amps, MC240 for example, does not have much bass in my system. But someone who listens to Midrange intense vocals with different speakers would be silly to own anythning else besides the MC240.

I generally use Solid State for my preamp and Tubes for my amps. I am sure I could find tube preamp that fits my system, someday I might. Right now I need preamp with HT pass through since I use the same same speakers for two channel and HT.

The main reason I like tubes for at least either the preamp or the amp is I try different brand tubes and tube types until I get the sound just the way I like it and not the way the amp designer thinks they can sell the most amps.

Outside of Onkyo unless you build the amp yourself paying more than $1000 for amp gets you into the area that sounds good. Paying more $1000 does not garantee good sound though, need to have the amp fit the system, your tastes and avoid overpriced junk.

  2. What is the status on the Eliptrac's?

    How was the Selenium 408?

    Craig 73

You would know, if you showed up this weekend... BTW, how is the Mother in law....LOL Stick out tongue

So far I have built 5 pairs of Eliptracs, and I think they are ready.

I think they might not be ready, better send a pair with a Fc around 500 - 600 that can be crossed a with 700Hz network from ALK.

Then we will do a Double Blind Study with another Mechanical Engineer using JBL & Selium Drivers and publish the results.

Of course I will need to keep the review samples.

  3. How much sound goes to the Rear Speakers varies by Diretor, Engineer, Movie Type.

    I have seen numbers like 30% & 40% for Rear On-Time.

I think those numbers would be close on action movies.

Trear jerker romance a little lower.

FYI - Don not hate the Academy - Great match when I had Forte IIs. Not so good with La Scalas.

  4. Depends on which Preamp.

I had Adcom amps with Pioneer Elite and there was a slight improvement with them, especially in power hungry bass.

Even the channels that were still using the Pioneer Elite amp sounded slightly better since there was not as much load on them.

I would recommend just using the what ever Integrated amp and enjoy it. Then when when the time is right get a really nice integrated or seperates system for the room you also listen to music the most often.

Adcoms and Klipsch are good for movies or Rock and Roll but can be harsh for two channel / music.

  5. I think that humidity change is what kills things like pianos - which are largely made out of wood. If you are controlling the humidity (i.e., the relative humidity is neither too dry nor too wet) then the wood parts should be okay.

Speaker drivers should last longer stored in cold conditions. The only issue might be if the voice coils contract onto the magnet pole pieces due to the differential thermal contraction of copper over iron, but this would take a very low temperature (like less than -50 F). Everything else should prolong the life of the driver's materials.

    My $0.02.

    Chris

Edit: Here is a link to the Madison NWS site for tracking things like humidity.

Relative humidity can be an issue if it is too high or too low.

It is so dry -10C that the wood can dry out and shrink. Antartica is actually classified as a desert.

A short blast should not hurt them but someone who works with wood would have a better idea.

  6. my room is roughly 13'x24'

the Emotiva 10 was doing pretty darn well when pair with the RF3s and was in my living room.

now that i move it to the new movie/media room, and partnering up with the cornwalls. it just kinda, fell short.

Are the Cornwalls cancelling the Sub out?

Try different locations for the sub in the room.

Sub(s) can actually work like noise cancelling headsets when paired with full range speakers.

This happend to me when I had Forte IIs. I hooked up the sub ran the room eq, it was so cool room was shaking, then I fired up the entire system only to find I less Bass with the sub?

I could not change the location until we purchased new furnature so unitl then I used the "Phase" feature to keep the sub from canceling out the Fortes.

Now I have the sub in different location and no longer set the phase at 180.

  7. Two are better than one - smoothes out response in room, bass will be more evenly distributed as you move around the room.

Try reducing the load on the Sub either run it's Room Calibration or adjust it's crossover.

Cornwalls should only need support below 40hertz - Set the cross over on the sub to around 50 hertz or so.

Does your sub have room calibration?

If this does not help I would get a sub or better yet two or three or four that is the same speed as your cornwalls but goes down to at least 24hertz.

  8. I'll second the vote for a La Scala or a Belle for the centre channel. I had a Heresy III centre, but the Belle is a definite upgrade, plus it makes a great TV stand.

As for surrounds, La Scalas would be ideal, but the Heresy is much more compact and is a decent tonal match for the big Heritage speakers. The Heresy IIs or IIIs are also a reasonable match sensitivity-wise, which makes level-matching much simpler than with low-sensitivity surrounds.

    I'll Third the vote.

Using an Academy because an Academy uses all the room I have. Using the same and really good amp across all three front helps but the Academy just has a different Timber and never really matches the La Scalas. Heresy is a little better but still not quite there.

  9. Hot debate topic.

But I think there are Good Tube amps and Good Solid State Amps, so it depends which Solid State and which Tubed amp you are considering.

Some say Tubes do not produce Bass as good as Solid State. If your only tube reference is a Mc-240 that could be the conclusion that you would draw.

My Tube amps produce plenty of Bass, too much for some pre-amps.

Better question would be which Amp is a better fit with the rest of my system? or a better fit for when my system is complete?

  10. My Comcast bill is too high. I have been loyal for years using both the internet and TV Service (Cable)

I might switch, so I wanted your thoughts on U Niverse?

1 Video/ audio feed for HD etc.......

2 Internet connection and up most of the time?

    Uverse overall has been good.

    DVR works great.

For HD with 5.1 you need a Fiber Input. 5.1 Only works with the Motorola VIP1216 when using Fiber for Audio and Component for the Picture.

Since HD is limited to 720P neither of these has been an issue, actually with my MX132 from 2002 it is a good fit.

Internet uptime has never been an issue but sometimes there are very sporadic very short, usually just a couple seconds and its back, outages since we are far from the node?

Are you within 2,000 feet of the Node? I am just under 3,000 feet, the max they allowed when mine was installed.

  11. Welcome to the forums.

Chances are, you are probably using a Mac with Safari. If so, the only way to get the returns/new paragraphs to show up for the forum is to insert a paragraph tag for each one. It's not so bad once you get used to it.

Use a less than symbol, a 'p', and a greater than symbol, with no spaces. Those are a shifted comma and period, btw.

    Bruce

    Good solution.

Using Firefox works also, elminates need to use paragraph tags.

  12. What ever they brought.

+1!!!! You want to impress someone, have them bring over THEIR favorite music. My boss was over at the house the other night. He had his iPad with him, I just let him go at it for about an hour... ear to ear grins.

And, a lot of "I've listen to this song a hundred times and I've never heard THAT..."

He's trying to figure out a way to get some La Scalas in his house now.Wink

    JROD,

How does the RC64 blend with the La Scalas?

I have an Academy, no room for another La Scala.

  13. Arkansas versus China, as production locations, do not matter. The STANDARD matters: which isn't tied to "lineage."

I respectfully beg to differ. I would rather buy made in the US products if I can and have paid more to do so.

IMVHO made in Arkansas and lineage may matter a lot to any new markets this deal with Audiovox, if it is completed, may open up.

For example, well heeled Asian audiophiles may prefer to buy Klipschorns LaScalas, Cornwalls, and Heresies made in the US as a status symbol and as they may still care about lineage more than the average audiophile and music lover here in the US excepting of course many of the Klipschanatics who hang out here of course.I would describe most of the rabid Klipsch fans in this forum as music lovers first, audiophiles second.

    just my 0.002 db

Oh, I have no issues with disagreement.

It just seems to me that, if well-heeled Asian audiophiles desired American made Klipsch, they'd just have purchased it now?

    My
point is that there are those who report Audiovox will not make a spec
Cornwall. That would be their choice and, at that point, it won't
    matter where anything is produced.

If they DO make a spec Cornwall, it will -- in fact -- be a Cornwall and, again, it won't matter where it is produced.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, acts like a duck, etc...

What is the difference between a Recession versus a Depression?

A Recession is when your neighobor losses his Job, a Depression is when you lose your Job.

Therefore It must not matter where it is made until you lose your job.

Or maybe it matters when your country slips to second world status since they are not competitive or it is made here but all the good engineering and management jobs and profits go overseas?

Then the key is to ask "why?," and analyze the underpinnings, not demonize an acquisition that we can all see makes $$$ for the purchaser.

I am a Klipsch fan and listen to Cornwalls every day, but I don't romanticize that Klispch -- in a business sense -- is any different than the Audiovox group, as they've made their own strategic purchases to further profit.

All I'm reporting is that the product, as we know it, will be the same in terms of sound reproduction or it will not. Either way, where it is produced is not important in terms of the end user. If it sounds like a good horn speaker, you're going to get the same folks buying unless the sound is not what attracted them, anyway. (i.e., if it was just the brand, which will still exist.)

As cold as this sounds, lets not pretend any of what is ocurring relates to people: that was never part of the overall equation.

That's just the way it is.

I have a basic understanding of Economics, Adam Smith, International Trade etc. you are right according to the academics.

But at some point we have to give the tie to the local guy and support companies that support U.S.A., it does matter.

If it is not a tie to the victor go the spoils . . .
