  1. Hi Carl How are you doing? I was wondering how they compared to Al's Trachorns. Al's Trachorn's do cost more, but are easier to implement. What is the going rate for the 511B - maybe with a little luck, one could find them for under $100 each? Has anyone else compared the Altec 511B to Al's Trachorn? Dan
  2. I have been reading this forum for a few weeks and found that some people have used the Altec 511B horn. Is this still a popular modification to make, or has something better replaced it? Has anyone lived with this combination for a few years and still recommend it. Or to put it another way, what is the best horn and driver combination for the Klipschorn. Sincerely Dan
  3. Hi Erland Thanks for your post. Sounds like you have your speakers tuned just the way you want them. As you might of guessed, you have me interested in the other mods that you have made. Please tell me more about known mid-bass issues and how you corrected them (or better yet, how one could correct them in a Khorn). Maybe I forgot already, but what twetters, crossover, and bass driver are you using. Sorry for all of the questions, but this speaker stuff is fun. Sincerely Dan
  4. Erland Your speakers look very nice. Good job. Does anybody have any opinions on how the Trachorns from Alkeng sound compared to the K-400, or any other stock Khorn? Dan
  5. Thanks for the replies. I will email Dean and maybe send him some fuel for the computer. How much does a lump of coal cost? Dan
  6. I am trying to learn about the various options for refurbishing or upgrading a pair of Klipschorn. I have seen Bob Cries and ALK Engineering website. Also, Bob was kind enough to exchange a few emails with me. Does Dean Westcott have a website? If not, does anyone know his email address. I am not ready to buy any of the available kits yet, but would like to know what my options are. Are there other options that I should look at? Sincerely Dan
  7. Thanks so much for all of the replys. I will start another post to tell you about my diffusers. Unfortunately, I have some yard work that I need to get to. I'll take some more pictures and post them later. Dan
  8. Here is another one showing the speaker in the corner.
  9. Here is another picture showing the top of the seal.
  10. Here is another picture. This is a picture with the side grill removed. The seal looks O.K. except at the bottom. I need to work on that.
  11. Thanks for explaining how to post pictures. Here is the first one. Dan
  12. This forum is great. Everyone is so helpfull and very responsive. Here is my story so far. It's Saturday and beautiful weather, so I went to Lowe's to look around. Bought five strips of 5/8" X 1/2" X 6" of rubber pipe insulation. I installed it on one speaker. It was very easy and appears to be a very good choice for this application. The rubber is very soft and pliable. After I pushed the speaker into the corner, I got curious, so I pulled it out and removed the side panels. Pushed it back into the corner and took a look. The seal appears to be up against the wall, except at the bottom. I took some pictures and will post them if I can. I need to rethink this a llttle to figure out the easiest way to deal with the cut out and the baseboard. O.K. Please somebody tell me how to add pictures to a post. Sincerely Dan
  13. Thank you What components are most like to change the sound as a result of age? Crossovers, drivers, surrounds, etc. Sincerely Dan
  14. The serial numbers are 17W836 and 17W837. Midrange:K-55-V on the back of the driver. K-400 on the horn. Is this horn phenolic? Tweeter: K-77-M Crossovers: Type AA Is this enough information to identify the age? Sincerely Dan
  15. Hi all Well, I have had the Klipschorns for one week now. I am having a lot of fun with them. I will post some pictures later. I have been reading the various post on sealing the Klipchorn to the corner of the wall. There is a lot of information on this topic and I will try to summarize what I have read. Option1: Use pipe insulation, or something similiar, to seal the cabinet to the wall. This seams like it is pretty straight forward, except for the cutout at the bottom of the back piece. I am talking about the cutout for the baseboard. One option is to replace this piece of wood with one that has not cutout. Then fur out a piece of MDF to the corner of my wall so the baseboard does not interfere. Add some sealing material and slide the speakers in place. I might of simplified this a bit, but I think I understand the basic idea. Option2: Add side panels like the Anneversary models have. This appeals to me alot. Pretty straight forward. But I do wonder about one thing. If adding side panels works as good as sealing the opening to the wall, why wouldn't Klipsch make this part of the design. I am hoping that these options have been debated and tested and a clear winner has emerged. Both options are pretty easy, I just need to pick one and go with it. So what does the Klipsch communtiy think - any and all suggestions are most welcome. Sincerely Dan
  16. Thanks Tom and Chris for the reply. I am going to follow the suggestion of waiting a while before playing with an electronic crossover. In the mean time, I have been reading up on sealing the cabinet to the wall. I have a question about sealing, but should I ask it here, or post a new question. Sincerely Dan
  17. This is my first post to this forum. Hi everyone. I just bought my first pair of Klipschorn and have been listing to them since Saturday. They are very impressive. I will post the serial numbers later to find out what year they were made. I am curious about the crossovers. How do these work with electronic crossovers? I do not have two more amps, but what the heck - it is fun to explore possibilities. Does anybody have any experience or stories about Klipschorns and electronic crossovers. Dan
