  1. Looking to purchase an RC64. Prefer it to be semi local but I know that's a long shot.

I'm not all that picky about condition or color.

Please let me know what you may have available.

    Thanks!

  2. When I had my UMC-1, it sounded pretty good but honestly, there was too much tweaking in the settings and I never got it to sound the way I wanted it.  IMO, the EMOQ was useless.  It sounded pretty bad after auto-calibration.  I then went into the EmoQ settings and manually began adjusting the EQ but the problem for me was I didn't know which frequencies needed boosting and which needed cutting.  I was just randomly guessing so I made a cheezy smiley face on the EQ and it sounded pretty good.  I'm sure if you know what you are doing, you can get the UMC-1 to sound great, I just did not have enough desire to spend hours trying to get it to sound fantastic.  I would rather run an auto calibration (like Audessey) and maybe adjust levels and crossover and pretty much set it and forget it.  I'm not much of a tweaker.

I couldn't have said it better myself. The UMC-1 is now listed on Craigslist.

  3. Fifty watts is fine for some jazz and other not to demanding music.  For rock, Hip Hop, bass heavy music, the 63's should have more power.

The 63's were thunderous with 50wpc. They sounded great in two channel and HT.

Now it's just flat and lifeless.

I set the Emotiva back to the factory settings and played with the EQ. Still no luck.

  4. Please don't think I am trying to come off as a know-it-all...... as I am FAR from it, but I came from the two channel world into home theater as well. I made the mistake of buying an expensive, higher-end home theater receiver (Denon 5700) which was pretty much obsolete after a few years. I decided to purchase a "stop-gap" refurbished unit (Yamaha RX-V863) while I shopped for my next higher-end home theater receiver. When I hooked up the refurbished mid-priced unit, it sounded as good as the unit I replaced it with. I still own it and probably won't ever spend more than $500 or so on an AVR. Buying seperates sounds good in theory, but finding a receiver with 7 pre-outs will likely put you in higher-end stuff anyway.

Don't get me wrong though, even though the Yamaha is a mid-priced unit, it actually is a beast power wise with 105W into an 8ohm load with all seven driven. I have K-horns and a Belle center, so it is more power than I need. I actually brought power up for a reason. Your 63s aren't nearly as efficient as my k-horns, but they aren't bad either. A powerful sub will help your cause and your current receiver might give you enough if you use the right cut-off frequency with your sub . It takes MUCH more power to push lows than mids and highs. Get a big powerful sub. I have mains the size of squatty refrigerators that have 15" bass drivers, yet I still use a sub.

I wouldn't be in this forum if I weren't a huge Klipsch fan, but I am NOT a huge fan of Klipsch subs. I think they can do better. 63s only have 6.5" drivers. They do quite well for what they are, but they don't have that depth like those big 80's speakers...... for example. A sub is a must. Get a 12" or 15" powered sub IMNSHO. A good and properly set-up sub makes a huge difference in your system.

As I first stated, please take my reply for what it is. It is only my opinion. I LOVE to give my opinion, but I don't think it is law by any means. I simply try to give my opinions based on my experiences.

      Bryant

    Hi Bryant,

I totally welcome your opinion. That's what I'm here for. I plan on adding a center and a sub. In the meantime I came across the Emotiva and borrowed the Proton. I was/am very happy with the Marantz. All I was looking for was the Emotiva to be equil to the sound of the Marantz. At this point I'm very surprised at how lame sounding the Emo is.

Maybe I'm missing something on the Emotiva?

    Thanks,

    Rick

  5. So I picked up an Emotiva UMC-1 and borrowed a friends Proton amp. I'm totally underwhelmed.

The Marantz NR1401 has way more balls with a hell of a lot more bass coming from my 63's. Not sure if it's the amp or the Emotiva. Maybe the Marantz is just that good?

Go into the eq and eq the bass up. The emo has a few places you can turn up the bass. But the eq would be the best. I run a umc1 on a pair of cornwalls and they pound the bass like crazy.

I looked around but didn't see too much in the way of correcting the bass. I have the manual as well but that didn't say too much either.

There's a HUGE difference between the two. The crappy low and marantz would make the furniture shake. The Emo/proton combo is extremely disappointing.

  6. How many watts do the Proton amp push and the Marantz?  A good 150 watt amp will make those speaker and the HT experience go to the upper room, lol.  We all want to go to the upper room, lol.

The proton is 60 Wpc the Marantz is 50wpc.

  8. Whew glad I asked. Any sub recommendations? I think the RT-10d is recommended but not sure A) I can find one B) I could afford one if I did.

I have a big empty spot just waiting for a nice RC-64 when it pops up.

  9. Skip the amp for now. Buy a sub and center first. Then just get you a bigger receiver. That receiver leaves little to be desired for future proofing a manly surround setup like the 63 HT. I've owned two different rf-63 theaters and they are great speakers. Be careful with movie volumes without a sub you can easily send some LFE to them speakers and blow a woofer. LFE is not made for 6.5" drivers.

Scrappy, thanks for the advice. I never thought about the LFE. Hmmm

  10. The specs on the Marantz page says Pre-Amplifier Out 2.1 which would be the two speakers and the .1 is your sub.

Ohhh I'm with you now. As you can tell I'm used to two channel amping. Never even thought about it till now but I see what you're saying about the preamp.

    Center and sub it is!

  11. .

I'll probably end up grabbing a 5ch amp and using the Marantz as a pre for now.

If I remember right, the 1402 does not have pre-outs for 5 channels.

I was kind of confused about that. It says there's a preouts would it not work for a five channel amp?

  12. RC64 and a quality sub are most definitely needed if you want to take your system to a whole new level. The amp will not be as drastic of an upgrade.

The Marantz is listed at 50wpc. I was looking at the Emotiva UPA-500 or UPA-700 which IIRC are 80wpc. Should I look elsewhere?

  13. After a long hiatus from HT I've finally started getting back into recently.

I picked up some RF-63's off my local CL for a great deal, so I figured it was time to reconfigure my man cave and get the HT kicking.

Up front I have the RF-63's

Rear surrounds are now my RB-35's

Both powered by a Marantz NR1402 receiver.

    No center or sub yet.

All I can say is wow! I used the set up mic on the Marantz and it did wonders. The bass shakes the couch.

I'll probably end up grabbing a 5ch amp and using the Marantz as a pre for now.

Eventually I'd like to add an RC-64 and a sub although I don't really feel it's needed, but hell is any of this really "needed'?

I had forgot how impressive the RF-63's are.

I know I'll take some heat but dare I say I like them better then my Cornwall III's???

  14. I would love to have the quartets but I live outside of St. Louis and Boston is a long way away! I would like my fronts to be two quartets L & R and a Hersey II for center, I already have a RSW 12d that works great. And I would use KG.2 for rear.

I don't mind driving a little ways BUT that may be a bit far. :)

  15. How are those Quartets doing? I had a set of Quartet, forte, forte II, and Chorus II here all at one time, took measurements and listening tests. Quartet was slighter in bass than it's big brothers as one would expect, otherwise it was classic Klipsch sound all the way!  Nice boxes here folks - and take up a teensy footprint, if SWMBO has anything to do with your selection!   GLWS

Pretty much right on with my thoughts of the Quartets. I certainly didn't find them lacking for bass in any way,  but compared to the Forte and Chorus there was a slight difference. But it comes in a more Wife friendly package and certainly not as "intrusive" as some may think.
